Aging triggers gut microbiota dysbiosis that disrupts the gut-brain axis (GBA), promoting neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Elderly exhibit reduced microbial diversity, depleted beneficial bacteria, and expanded pathobionts, elevating neurotoxic metabolites-lipopolysaccharides (LPS), trimethylamine-N-oxide, kynurenine derivatives, and secondary bile acids. These drive "inflammaging," blood-brain barrier breakdown, microglial activation, mitochondrial impairment, and proteinopathies in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Conversely, neuroprotective metabolites from commensals-short-chai

BACKGROUND: For the past 2 decades, there has been a growing appreciation of the role that the microbiota (the trillions of microorganisms within and on our bodies) plays as one of the key regulators of gut-brain function and has led to the appreciation of the importance of a distinct microbiota-gut-brain axis across the lifespan but especially during neurodevelopment.
SUMMARY: The gut microbiota and its relevant metabolites interact with the immune and the central nervous systems during critical temporal windows of development. These critical developmental windows perinatally (during the fir

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterised by chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, with unclear aetiology but with known factors contributing to the disease, including genetics, immune responses, environmental factors and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Existing pharmacotherapies mainly target the inflammatory symptoms of disease, but recent research has highlighted the capacity for microbial-accessible carbohydrates that confer health benefits (ie, prebiotics) to selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial gut bacteria for improved IBD management. However, since preb

The gut microbiome is a key element for health preservation and disease prevention. Nevertheless, defining a healthy gut microbiome is complex since it is modulated by several factors, such as host genetics, sex, age, geographical zone, drug use, and, especially, diet. Although a healthy diet has proven to increase microbial alpha and beta diversity and to promote the proliferation of health-related bacteria, considering the current environmental and nutritional crisis, such as climate change, water shortage, loss of diversity, and the obesity pandemic, it should be highlighted that a healthy

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The intestinal commensal microbiota are important in shaping immune cell repertoire and are influenced by host genetics. Because of this intricate interaction, an intestinal dysbiosis has been associated with multiple immune-mediated polygenic diseases. This review summarizes the literature on how alterations in the intestinal microbiota contribute to immune-mediated ocular disease, and how to potentially target the gut microbiome for therapeutic benefit.
RECENT FINDINGS: Several groups have demonstrated the importance of the intestinal microbiome in uveitis pathogenesis. T

Microbial subtyping is the most common approach for Salmonella source attribution. Typically, attributions are computed using frequency-matching models like the Dutch and Danish models based on phenotyping data (serotyping, phage-typing, and antimicrobial resistance profiling). Herewith, we critically review three major paradigms facing Salmonella source attribution today: (i) the use of genotyping data, particularly Multi-Locus Variable Number of Tandem Repeats Analysis (MLVA), which is replacing traditional Salmonella phenotyping beyond serotyping; (ii) the integration of case-control data i

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is a debilitating infectious disease of human skin and nerves. Genetics factors of the host play an important role in the disease susceptibility. Toll-interacting protein (TOLLIP) is an inhibitory adaptor protein within the toll-like receptor (TLR) pathway, which recognizes structurally conserved molecular patterns of microbial pathogens, initiating immune responses. The objective of this study was to investigate the association of variants in the TOLLIP gene with susceptibility to leprosy in Mexican patients.
METHODS: TOLLIP polymorphisms were studied using a case-control

Periodontitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease influenced by genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. Recent advancements in genomic and epigenomic research have highlighted the role of genetic polymorphisms and genome-wide DNA methylation in its pathogenesis. DNA methylation regulates gene expression, affecting immune responses and inflammatory pathways, while genetic polymorphisms may predispose individuals to altered host-microbial interactions and increased susceptibility to periodontal destruction. Recent studies have identified promising periodontal biomarkers, including s

Continuous cassava cropping can lead to soil degradation and disturbances in soil microbial functions, threatening the sustainability of cassava production systems. To address these challenges, this study examined the effects of biochar on soil physicochemical properties and microbial functional profiles in a continuous cassava cropping system. Two biochar application rates (0 and 3 Mg ha-1) were applied, and metagenomic sequencing was conducted to evaluate microbial community composition and functional genes related to carbon and nitrogen cycling in rhizosphere and bulk soils. The results dem

Combined contamination of soils with antibiotics and heavy metals represents a growing environmental challenge, yet remediation strategies addressing their synergistic toxicity remain limited. In this study, the bioremediation potential of a tetracycline-degrading bacterial consortium (Raoultella sp. XY-1 and Pandoraea sp. XY-2) was evaluated in tetracycline-copper (TC-Cu) co-contaminated soils by integrating chemical, biological, and ecological assessments. Soil column experiments demonstrated that bioaugmentation significantly enhanced TC degradation (48.57-53.71% after 90 days) compared to

Microbial superantigens (SA), bound to human B cell surface MHC class II molecules, have been shown to promote direct, "cognate" interaction with SA-reactive autologous Th cells, resulting in polyclonal Ig production. To investigate the potential for microbial SA to support Th cell-dependent, Ag-specific antibody responses, we have extended our studies to the murine system. BALB/c Th cell lines (TCL), specific for either the Mycoplasma arthritis-derived SA or the Staphylococcus aureus-derived toxic shock syndrome toxin-1) were generated. These TCL cells are SA-specific, functionally noncross-r

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is increasingly recognized as a complex, systemic disorder involving interactions between the central nervous system and peripheral biological processes. Growing evidence implicates dysregulation of the gut-brain axis in SCZ pathophysiology; however, the genetic mechanisms linking schizophrenia susceptibility to gut-related biological pathways remain poorly understood, particularly with respect to causal gene prioritization across tissues.
METHODS: To address this gap, we conducted a cross-tissue transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) using FUSION across f

Staphylococcus aureus cells that are initially susceptible to cephalexin can be induced to acquire intrinsic resistance to cephalexin in comparatively few steps. Concomitantly, resistance to cephalothin, oxacillin, and dicloxacillin increases. By population analysis, there is heteroresistance to cephalexin in some strains of S. aureus. Heterogeneity in colonial morphology on prolonged incubation in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations of cephalexin may constitute an expression of such heteroresistance.

Malaria parasites in different areas where malaria is endemic display different levels of resistance to antimalarial drugs as the result of varied drug use histories. To provide updated knowledge of drug sensitivities during the malaria elimination phase in Southeast Asia, an epicenter of multidrug resistance, we determined in vitro susceptibilities of culture-adapted Plasmodium falciparum isolates from two eastern border regions (Wa and Kachin) of Myanmar to 10 drugs. Despite their close proximity, the Kachin parasites displayed higher 50% inhibitory concentrations than the Wa parasites to ch
