Sex Differences in Multimorbidity, Inappropriate Medication and Adverse Outcomes of Inpatient Care: MoPIM Cohort Study.

There is no published evidence on the possible differences in multimorbidity, inappropriate prescribing, and adverse outcomes of care, simultaneously, from a sex perspective in older patients. We aimed to identify those possible differences in patients hospitalized because of a chronic disease exacerbation. A multicenter, prospective cohort study of 740 older hospitalized patients (≥65 years) was designed, registering sociodemographic variables, frailty, Barthel index, chronic conditions (CCs), geriatric syndromes (GSs), polypharmacy, potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) according to ST

Severe frailty and cognitive impairment are related to higher mortality in 12-month follow-up of nursing home residents.

Frailty syndrome (FS) and cognitive impairment are associated with an increased risk of falls, disability, hospitalization and death. We investigated prognostic meaning of FS and cognitive impairment in persons ≥ 65 years, living in 2 nursing homes. Information about the health status of patients was gathered from history, medical documentation, test assessing FS, according to the Canadian Study of Health and Aging-Clinical Frailty Scale (CSHA-CFS) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The study group included 66 women and 20 men, between 66 and 101 years of age (mean ± S.D.=83.8 ± 8.3

Aetiology of pressure sores in patients with spinal cord injury.

One hundred consecutive patients admitted to the National Spinal Injuries Centre, Stoke Mandeville Hospital, with pressure sores were studied to assess the relative importance of factors known to predispose to the development of scores. Loss of feeling was critical, because patients were unable to appreciate pain when the sore was developing. Risk of developing a sore increased with age, but duration of the paralysis was of equal importance. After discharge from hospital the presence of a caring relative or friend was essential for survival. Many patients developed sores because of poor facili

Severe phlebitis and cutaneous necrosis following peripheral administration of high-concentration potassium chloride: A case report and vascular access management implications.

Electrolyte imbalance management is crucial in diverse clinical scenarios, with intravenous potassium repletion often required. High-concentration infusions can pose severe complications if extravasation occurs, leading to phlebitis, local tissue damage, or in severe cases, cutaneous necrosis. This risk is elevated in geriatric patients due to factors like reduced tissue elasticity and sensitivity. We report a case of phlebitis and skin necrosis in an elderly woman after peripheral KCl infusion (6% [800 mmol/L]). A woman in her early 70 s presented with obstructive jaundice and critically low

Development and initial validation of the Comprehensive Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Tool.

OBJECTIVES: Improving the oral health of the elderly is crucial to improving their general health and quality of life. To reach this goal, it is necessary to start with a comprehensive oral health assessment and a detailed treatment plan. The aim of this study was, therefore, to develop a comprehensive Oral Health Assessment Tool for the geriatric population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Following a panel of experts' consultation, a clinical form and a self-assessment questionnaire were developed, encompassing eight domains: dental caries, periodontal diseases, partial and complete edentulism, oral

ADAPT and FRAME guided implementation science approach to improve care transitions in older colorectal surgery patients: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are disproportionately vulnerable to adverse outcomes during postoperative care transitions. While evidence-based care transition interventions exist, such as the Care Transitions Intervention (CTI), their core components have not been systematically adapted for surgical populations. Concurrently, geriatric surgery co-management models, such as the Optimization of Senior Care and Recovery (OSCAR) model, improve outcomes but do not address the post-discharge transition. To bridge this gap, we merged the geriatrics-informed, inpatient co-management model of OSCAR with th

Providing Older Adults Experiencing Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia with an Education Booklet to Improve Health Information Recall.

BACKGROUND: A common challenge in health education for older surgical patients is poor memory, which hinders the processing of health information. Structured educational materials have been shown to be effective in improving information retention, but there remains a paucity of materials specifically designed to address the cognitive and sensory characteristics of older adults. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of an adapted education booklet based on cognitive load theory and older adults' preferences on the memory of health information in older surgical adults experiencing benign prostatic

Investigating mortality and morbidity associated with UrINary incontinence during Older Womens Secondary Care Admissions and exploring nurses experiences of delivering related care (U-INconti): a mixed methods research protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary incontinence (UI) is associated with increasing age and is more frequently experienced by women. Despite 40% prevalence in the community, little is known about the prevalence/incidence of UI in older women during hospital admission. UI during hospital admissions, within this group, has also been under-researched in terms of its relationship to specific clinical conditions and mortality rates. Given that UI has serious implications for both patient care and women's general health and well-being on discharge, this protocol describes a planned research project which aims to

[Present condition of home care treatment at Shinshiro Municipal Hospital].

Shinshiro Municipal Hospital is situated in a mountainous region of Oku-Mikawa area at the East side of Aichi prefecture. Because of this geographical location, there are relatively higher numbers of elderly patients living alone in comparison to other regions of Japan. Our hospital consists of a general ward (255 beds), recuperation area combined with a medical care ward (46 beds), and a visiting nurse care unit. We have intended to strengthen a team medical care system for patients from time of admission to after discharge treatment by use of our unique hospital arrangement under the detaile
