Patterns of limb apraxia in primary progressive aphasia.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a syndrome characterized by a progressive language deficit without other dementia features for at least two years (). Other deficits that are likely to co-exist with aphasia, such as apraxia, have only been investigated in a few case studies and only at a rudimentary level for the most part. In this study we investigate the frequency and severity of apraxic deficits in PPA patients. Ten PPA patients and twelve aged-matched healthy adults performed eight transitive gestures to pantomime and to imitation. Gesture performance was measured along five movement d…

Memory-driven movements in limb apraxia: is there evidence for impaired communication between the dorsal and the ventral streams?

Memory-driven reaching and grasping movements were analysed in patients with left cerebral hemispheric damage and impaired gesture imitation. The dorsal and ventral streams of the visual pathway model of Milner and Goodale (Milner and Goodale, The Visual Brain in Action, 1995) are thought to operate relatively independently. However, cross-connections between the areas of each pathway are likely to enable interactions essential for higher-level praxis. Apraxic errors such as seen in gesture imitation can possibly be understood as arising from a disconnection of the two visual pathways. If the

Initiation and repair of intentional communication acts by adults with severe to profound cognitive disabilities.

This study assessed the communication initiation and repair behaviors of 28 individuals with severe to profound mental retardation in a variety of experimental conditions. All of these individuals communicated through nonsymbolic gestures. The experimental procedures were devised to simulate the conditions that typically evoke two different types of initiations: comments and requests. Each subject initiation was followed by an experimenter response that indicated a communication breakdown to determine if and how these subjects would attempt to repair such breakdowns. Different indicators of co…

Fast soft-tissue deformations coupled with mixed reality toward the next-generation childbirth training simulator.

High-quality gynecologist and midwife training is particularly relevant to limit medical complications and reduce maternal and fetal morbimortalities. Physical and virtual training simulators have been developed. However, physical simulators offer a simplified model and limited visualization of the childbirth process, while virtual simulators still lack a realistic interactive system and are generally limited to imposed predefined gestures. Objective performance assessment based on the simulation numerical outcomes is still not at hand. In the present work, we developed a virtual childbirth si…

Exploring the Guessing-Game Experimental Paradigm: Inferences From Closed- Versus Open-Ended Semantic Space.

How we measure success in signal comprehension experiments fundamentally shapes our conclusions. Two recent studies have demonstrated that humans can guess the meanings of novel vocalizations and ape gestures above chance when selecting from limited alternatives. We replicated both experiments using open-ended responses instead of multiple choice. For the vocalization data, where participants provided single-word or short-phrase responses, we systematically compared three evaluation methods applied to the same responses: exact matching, graded similarity ratings, and computational semantic sim…

Distinct cognitive components and their neural substrates underlying praxis and language deficits following left hemisphere stroke.

Apraxia is characterised by multiple deficits of higher motor functions, primarily caused by left hemisphere (LH) lesions to parietal-fronta … ciated with specific lesion patterns. Regarding praxis functions, performance in imitating arm/hand gestures was accounted for by a second component related to the left precentral gyrus and the inferior parietal lobule. Imitating finger configurations, pantomiming the use of objects related to the face, and actually using objects loaded on component 3, rel …

Vowel Articulation Dynamic Stability Related to Parkinson's Disease Rating Features: Male Dataset.

Neurodegenerative pathologies as Parkinson's Disease (PD) show important distortions in speech, affecting fluency, prosody, articulation and phonation. Classically, measurements based on articulation gestures altering formant positions, as the Vocal Space Area (VSA) or the Formant Centralization Ratio (FCR) have been proposed to measure speech distortion, but these markers are based mainly on static positions of sustained vowels. The present study introduces a measurement based on the mutual information distance among probability density functions of kinematic correlates derived from formant d…

[Nonverbal communication by the presurgical patient].

Throughout human history, besides oral language, man has used other forms of communication which are known as non-verbal. From the three components of the basic structure of human communication, language, paralanguage and kinesthesia, we have chosen the last one, kinesthesia, to develop our project. Kinesthesia studies the gestures, mannerisms and postures, or in other words all body movements and positions which occur as part of our speech or independent to it. This project proposes to analyze presurgical patients' kinesthetic manifestations. We have observed that some patients do not verball…

Ideomotor apraxia and cerebral dominance for motor control.

Ideomotor apraxia is a symptom of left hemisphere damage. Patients with ideomotor apraxia commit errors when imitating movements with their left, non-paralyzed hand. This has been taken as evidence for a motor dominance of the left hemisphere. It has been hypothesized that the left hemisphere is dominant for internal preprogramming of skilled movements of either hand. We investigated the kinematics of movement trajectories of imitation of meaningless gestures. Group analysis confirmed that hesitant, feedback-controlled movement prevail in patients with apraxia, but analysis of single cases rev…

Scaling of glottal opening.

Laryngeal control occurs mainly along two dimensions. One involves the longitudinal tension of the vocal folds and is used for control of fundamental frequency. The other involves abduction/adduction of the folds. This dimension is used in the vegetative functions of the larynx and in its phonetic function to control voicing and aspiration as well as voice quality. Although fine adjustments in timing of abduction/adduction gestures relative to supralaryngeal events produce contrasts of aspiration in obstruents, variations in the size of these gestures appear to be less significant and less fin…

Newborn Infants Selectively Attend to Points That Refer to Objects.

Recognizing that certain acts are communicative is a key requirement of the development of communicative skills. Newborn infants have been shown to selectively respond to certain ostensive cues, including mutual gaze and infant directed speech, supporting theories of the evolution of ostensive-inferential communication. That said, no study has yet examined newborns' responses to pointing gestures, nor whether these responses are sensitive to pointing as an ostensive cue. The current study investigates whether a sensitivity to pointing is present in 5-day-old newborns by comparing newborns' att…

Give Me a Sign: Using Data Gloves for Static Hand-Shape Recognition.

Human-to-human communication via the computer is mainly carried out using a keyboard or microphone. In the field of virtual reality (VR), where the most immersive experience possible is desired, the use of a keyboard contradicts this goal, while the use of a microphone is not always desirable (e.g., silent commands during task-force training) or simply not possible (e.g., if the user has hearing loss). Data gloves help to increase immersion within VR, as they correspond to our natural interaction. At the same time, they offer the possibility of accurately capturing hand shapes, such as those u

Sociolinguistic Variation in Mouthings in British Sign Language: A Corpus-Based Study.

Mouth activity forms a key component of all sign languages. This can be divided into mouthings, which originate from words in the ambient spoken language, and mouth gestures, which do not. This study examines the relationship between the distribution of mouthings co-occurring with verb signs in British Sign Language (BSL) and various linguistic and social factors, using the BSL Corpus. We find considerable variation between participants and a lack of homogeneity in mouth actions with particular signs. This accords with previous theories that mouthings constitute code-blending between spoken an…

Drug-related suicide: a DAWN profile.

Drug-related suicides and suicide attempts/gestures account for a relatively large percentage of the drug-involved cases seen by hospital emergency rooms and medical examiners. While tranquilizer involvement characterizes the largest subgroup of suicide cases in the emergency room, barbiturate involvement is most frequently true of suicide cases seen by medical examiners. However, in both settings the suicides tend to be older and to include relatively more females and fewer Blacks than the nonsuicides.

MiDAS: A Multimodal Data Acquisition System and Dataset for Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (RAMIS) research increasingly relies on multimodal data, yet access to proprietary robot telemetry remains a barrier. We introduce the Multimodal Data Acquisition System (MiDAS), an open-source, platform-agnostic system enabling time-synchronized, non-invasive multimodal data acquisition across surgical robotic platforms. METHODS: MiDAS integrates electromagnetic and depth camera-based hand tracking, foot pedal sensing and surgical video capture without requiring proprietary robot interfaces. We validated MiDAS on the open-source Raven-II
