In an era of increasing life expectancy and growing patient demands towards lifelong natural tooth retention, accurate assessment of gingival recessions is crucial for diagnosing periodontal diseases, planning preventive or restorative interventions, and evaluating their outcomes. The traditional two-dimensional (2D) methods, while useful, often fall short in capturing the complex topography of gingival tissue margins and their changes over time. By examining relevant published studies, this review highlights the transition from 2D to 3D techniques, analyzing the limitations of widely used 2D

OBJECTIVE: Gingival tissue regeneration is associated with several challenges. Tissue engineering regenerates the different components of the tissues, providing three major elements: living cells, appropriate scaffolds, and tissue-inducing substances. This study aimed to regenerate the gingival connective tissue in vitro, using human gingival fibroblasts cultured in three-dimensional fibrin gel scaffolds.
DESIGN: Human gingival fibroblasts were seeded in a novel three-dimensional fibrin gel scaffold and maintained in two media types: platelet lysate media (control) and collagen-stimulating me

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis [HGF, (MIM 135300)], a rare benign oral condition, has several adverse consequences such as aesthetic changes, malocclusion, speech impediments, and abnormal dentition. However, relatively few studies have addressed the beneficial effects of thick gingival tissues in resisting external stimuli. In this report, we present a unique case of a family affected by HGF that manifests as a 'Работает' gingiva. Human β-defensins (hBDs) are known to play a pivotal role in the clearance and killing of various microbes, and contribute to maintaining a healthy oral environmen

Gingival recession is a common clinical condition that creates unfavorable esthetics and dentinal hypersensitivity. Treatment of gingival recession aims to create or increase keratinized tissue and provide root coverage. The aim of this article is to present 2 clinical cases of severe Miller Class II gingival recession with absence of keratinized tissue. Each patient was treated with a free gingival graft associated with a coronally positioned flap. Follow-up indicated that the use of the free gingival graft was effective in increasing keratinized tissue and in covering the recession in a sati

BACKGROUND: A defined role for reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the tissue destruction that characterizes periodontitis has been described. Protein carbonyl (PC) is the most widely used biomarker for oxidative damage to proteins, and reflects cellular damage induced by multiple forms of ROS. The purpose of this study is to determine the presence of PC in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in healthy, gingivitis, and chronic periodontitis (CP) subjects and to find an association, if any.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total number of 75 subjects (38 males and 37 females) were selected based on their cl…

In a significant number of cases (25-81%) immunosuppressant treatment with cyclosporin A (CsA) is associated with gingival overgrowth, seriously interfering with the functions of mastication and speech. In CsA-induced gingival enlargement, quantitative modifications of the extracellular matrix components occur, and collagen (COL) metabolism and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been suggested as being the main targets. Since the mechanisms at the basis of CsA-induced gingival overgrowth are not yet completely understood, our aim was to analyze the effect of CsA on COL turnover in cultured

Nitric oxide is known to be an important inflammatory mediator, and is implicated in the pathophysiology of a range of inflammatory disorders. The aim of this study was to determine the localization and distribution of endothelial NOS (NOS-II) in human gingival tissue, and to ascertain if human gingival fibroblasts express NOS-II when stimulated with interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) and bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The distribution of NOS-II in inflamed and non-inflamed specimens of human gingivae was studied using a monoclonal antibody against nitric oxide synthase II. Cultures of fibrobla

β-glycyrrhetinic acid (BGA) possesses antibacterial effects against human supragingival plaque bacteria and inhibits biofilm formation. However, the effect of BGA on already formed dental plaque has not been investigated. We analyzed and compared the effects of BGA on preformed supragingival plaque biofilms with those of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). All experiments were performed in vitro using biofilms formed by incubating supragingival plaque bacteria for 24 h. First, we analyzed the number of viable and dead bacteria in the biofilms following BGA and CPC application. The number of viable

Dental caries and gingivitis are highly prevalent worldwide, with limited evidence on the role of ABO blood groups in influencing susceptibility among Indians. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 600 adults, with blood groups determined serologically; caries assessed using the DMFT index and gingivitis using the Gingival Index. Blood group O showed the highest mean DMFT (4.82 ± 2.15) and gingivitis prevalence (82.6%), with significant differences across groups (p<0.01). Logistic regression identified group O as an independent predictor for high caries (OR=2.15) and gingivitis (OR=1.94). B…
