PRÉCIS: Younger patient age (coefficient: 0.10, P =0.04) and greater peak IOP during follow-up (coefficient: -0.14, P =0.03), but not baseline optical microangiography parameters, were significantly associated with a faster rate of RNFL loss in mild-moderate PACG.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between optical microangiography (OMAG) measurements and progressive retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) loss in primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG).
METHODS: In a prospective study, 45 eyes of 30 PACG patients (86 hemifields) with mild to moderate functional damage were longitudinally studied fo

Malignant glaucoma is characterized by ciliary block or aqueous misdirection, shallowing of the anterior chamber with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), resistance to treatment, and rapid progression to blindness. However, the exact pathogenic mechanism is yet to be established. Here, we report a case of malignant glaucoma caused by immediate primary phacoemulsification for acute primary angle closure (APAC). A 90-year-old woman, who had experienced right eye pain and blurred vision one day prior, had a cataract in the same eye without phacodonesis. The right eye IOP was 39 mmHg, preoperativ

PURPOSE: To evaluate the refractive status and ocular biometric parameters in primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) eyes with different axial lengths (ALs).
METHODS: In total, 742 Chinese PACG subjects with complete ophthalmic examinations were enrolled. The refractive status was categorized as myopia (spherical equivalent [SE] ≤-0.5 D), emmetropia (-0.5 D < SE < +0.5 D), and hyperopia (SE ≥+0.5 D), whereas the AL was divided into short (AL <22.5 mm), regular (22.5 ≤ AL <23.5 mm), and long (AL ≥23.5 mm). The refractive status and ocular biometric parameters were compared among different AL gr

An early and correct diagnosis improves the prognosis of post-operative Acute angle closure glaucoma (AACG). A 65 years-old monophtalmus man was operated for a total knee replacement surgery, under general anaesthesia without any adverse events. The day after, the patient described recurrent periorbital pain in his eye, with ocular hyperaemia, and reduced visual acuity. A diagnosis of AACG was made and conservative treatment was started to reduce the intraocular pressure. In the post-operative AACG, several predisposing local factors including genetic predisposition, female gender, hypermetrop

Primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is a major cause of blindness worldwide. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) followed by replication in a combined total of 10,503 PACG cases and 29,567 controls drawn from 24 countries across Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. We observed significant evidence of disease association at five new genetic loci upon meta-analysis of all patient collections. These loci are at EPDR1 rs3816415 (odds ratio (OR) = 1.24, P = 5.94 × 10(-15)), CHAT rs1258267 (OR = 1.22, P = 2.85 × 10(-16)), GLIS3 rs736893 (OR = 1.18, P = 1.43 ×

BACKGROUND: Nd:YAG laser iridotomy is routinely used as a procedure for primary acute angle-closure glaucoma (AACG). The clear advantage of Nd:YAG laser iridotomy is to resolve pupillary block without opening the eye. Nevertheless it remains unclear whether Nd:YAG laser iridotomy is equally effective as surgical iridectomy. In this context cases in which AACG recurred despite patent Nd:YAG laser iridotomy are of interest.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, we analyzed the charts of 90 patients who presented with unilateral primary AACG in our department over 3 years and were trea

Six eyes developed angle-closure glaucoma secondary to total hemorrhagic retinal detachment that occurred as a rare complication of senile disciform macular degeneration. The patients were all elderly with known senile macular choroidal degeneration. They had no history of eye surgery and experienced sudden loss of vision followed by pain. Balloons of retinal detachment were pushed tightly against the lens in a characteristic "Y suture" appearance causing shallowing of the anterior chamber and glaucoma. Pathologic examination of three eyes revealed that the choroid was not detached but that a
