OBJECTIVE: To characterize the magnitude of virus contamination on personal protective equipment (PPE), skin, and clothing of healthcare workers (HCWs) who cared for patients having acute viral infections.
DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
SETTING: Acute-care academic hospital.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 59 HCWs agreed to have their PPE, clothing, and/or skin swabbed for virus measurement.

BACKGROUND: Skin contact with the components in asphalt and bitumen can lead to irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, but few data are available in the dermatologic literature on the skin symptoms caused by work with bitumen. In addition, working methods have changed markedly during recent decades.
METHODS: A questionnaire was delivered to 50 roofers and 101 road pavers. The questionnaire dealt with skin symptoms, symptoms caused by solvent products, the use of personal protection, smoking, eating habits, work conditions, changing and cleaning of overalls, etc.

Contact urticaria due to gloves is mostly related to immediate-type allergy to natural rubber latex (NRL), and rarely due to rubber chemicals. We report the results of prick tests with rubber chemicals carried out on 75 latex-allergic patients. Clinically relevant hypersensitivity was not observed in our patient collection. A survey was undertaken over a 15-week period (62 working days) to find out the incidence and common mechanism of accidental injuries and blood exposure in cardiothoracic surgical teams. Two hundred and seventy events were reported: 70% glove penetrations, 18% skin punctures, 4% non-bleeding skin lesions and 8% lacerations with bleeding. Eye splashes occurred in 14% of the cases.
