Clinical Risks for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Our understanding of risk factors for the development of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is still incomplete and includes genetic and env … d of exposure relative to diagnosis, and the inability to quantify past exposures. Agent Orange and glyphosate herbicides have perhaps the most data to support their role. CLL is preceded by a precursor condition called monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL), which could therefore be considered a risk factor, but which itself is likely caused by the same risk …

Temporal trends in organophosphorus pesticides use and concentrations in river water in Japan, and risk assessment.

We reviewed organophosphorus pesticide use in Japan between 1982 and 2016 using data from the National Institute of Environmental Studies. O … anophosphorus pesticide use was the highest for chlorpyrifos (105,263 tons/year) and the lowest for glyphosate-sodium (8 tons/year). The ecotoxicological risk assessment indicated that diazinon and fenitrothion posed strong risks to the Japanese aquatic environment, and chlorpyrifos and malathion have moderate risks. None of the pesticides that were assessed …

Sublethal toxicity of Roundup to immunological and molecular aspects of Biomphalaria alexandrina to Schistosoma mansoni infection.

The present study was performed to elucidate the cellular mechanisms of Biomphalaria alexandrina snails hemocytes against sublethal concentration (10 mg/L) of herbicide Roundup (48% Glyphosate) and/or Schistosoma mansoni infection during 7 days of exposure. Obtained results indicated that herbicide treatment and/or infection led to significant increase (P<0.05) in total hemocytes count during exposure period. Examination of hemocytes monolayers resulted in observation of 3 morphologically different cell types, round small, hyalinocytes and spreading hemocytes. Spreading hemocytes are the domin…

Chronic Kidney Disease in Agricultural Communities.

Patients residing in agricultural communities have a high risk of developing chronic kidney disease. In the Great Plains, geo-environmental risk factors (eg, variable climate, temperature, air quality, water quality, and drought) combine with agro-environmental risk factors (eg, exposure to fertilizers, soil conditioners, herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides) to increase risk for toxic nephropathy. However, research defining the specific influence of agricultural chemicals on the progression of kidney disease in rural communities has been somewhat limited. By linking retrospective clinical d

Harnessing Oil-Water Microinterfaces for the Catalyst-Free Oxidative Degradation of Toxic Organic Pollutants.

Toxic organic pollutants are environmentally harmful and pose serious risks to ecosystems and public health. Their removal from industrial w … ing the transformation of organic pollutants. A wide range of compounds, including benzene, phenol, glyphosate, 2,4-D, and naphthalene, are efficiently oxidized/degraded, demonstrating the universality of the approach. High-resolution mass spectrometry is employed to identify and quantify reaction products and to elucidate the oxidation/degradation pathways. …

Impact of pesticides on marine coral reef foraminifera.

Our laboratory study looked into how pesticides affect the foraminifera species Heterostegina depressa and their obligatory algal endosymbionts. We incubated the foraminifera separately with different types of pesticides at varying concentrations (1 %, 0.01 % and 0.0001 %); we included the insecticide Confidor© (active substance: imidacloprid), the fungicide Pronto©Plus (tebuconazole), and the herbicide Roundup© (glyphosate). Our evaluation focused on the symbiont's photosynthetically active area (PA), and the uptake of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and nitrogen (nitrate) to determine the v…

Often accompanied by chronic pelvic … s (in vitro and on animal models) of some xenobiotics-associated genetically modified food, such as glyphosate and Cry1Ab protein, and extrapolates on their potential role in the pathophysiology of endometriosis. Their roles as immune toxicants, pro-oxidants, endocrine disruptors and epigenetic modulators are discussed.

Assessing the ecotoxicological effects of pesticides on non-target plant species.

Mixtures of an insecticide, a fungicide and a herbicide induce high toxicities and systemic physiological disturbances in winter Apis mellifera honey bees.

Multiple pesticides originating from plant protection treatments and the treatment of pests infecting honey bees are frequently detected in beehive matrices. Therefore, winter honey bees, which have a long life span, could be exposed to these pesticides for longer periods than summer honey bees. In this study, winter honey bees were exposed through food to the insecticide imidacloprid, the fungicide difenoconazole and the herbicide glyphosate, alone or in binary and ternary mixtures, at environmental concentrations (0 (controls), 0.1, 1 and 10 μg/L) for 20 days. The survival of the honey bees …

Effects of commonly used pesticides and their mixtures on the upper airway epithelium using porcine organoid-derived models.

Airborne pesticide contamination can result in widespread respiratory exposure particularly among agricultural workers, yet its impact on respiratory health remains poorly understood. In this study, we assessed the effects of ten commonly used pesticides and the synergist piperonyl butoxide, individually and in mixtures, on the viability of porcine proximal airway epithelial organoid-derived monolayers. Eight of the eleven compounds reduced cell viability, with pendimethalin, glyphosate, cyprodinil and piperonyl butoxide inducing pronounced effects at low concentrations. Mixture exposure cause…

Carbon-Phosphorus Lyase-the State of the Art.

Organophosphonates are molecules that contain a very chemically stable carbon-phosphorus (C-P) bond. Microorganisms can utilize phosphonates as potential source of crucial elements for their growth, as developed several pathways to metabolize these compounds. One among these pathways is catalyzed by C-P lyase complex, which has a broad substrate specifity; therefore, it has a wide application in degradation of herbicides deposited in the environment, such as glyphosate. This multi-enzyme system accurately recognized in Escherichia coli and genetic studies have demonstrated that it is encoded b…

Phenyl-O-β-d-ribofuranoside Derivatives from the Plant Endophytic Fungus Neofusicoccum sp. LZUC-S1 and Their Herbicidal Activity.

Seven novel phenyl-O-β-d-ribofuranoside derivatives (1-7), along with four known naphthalenones (8-11), were isolated from the endophytic fu … ity against both weed species at 100 mg/L, exhibiting efficacy superior to the commercial herbicide glyphosate at the same concentration. Preliminary mechanism studies indicated that the phenyl-O-β-D-ribofuranoside derivatives probably exert their herbicidal effect by disrupting energy metabolism, specifically through the inhibition α-amylase functionality. …

How the exposure to environmentally relevant pesticide formulations affects the expression of stress response genes and its relation to oxidative damage and genotoxicity in Caiman latirostris.

Roundup® Original DI promotes proliferation in papillary thyroid carcinoma cells: a comparative study highlighting cell-type-dependent effects.

INTRODUCTION: Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs), such as Roundup®, are ubiquitous environmental contaminants with emerging endocrine-disrupting properties. Based on previous findings of non-monotonic effects in thyroid models, this study investigated lineage-dependent cytotoxic and proliferative responses to Roundup® in thyroid cells with different cytogenic profiles. METHODS: Human papillary carcinoma (BCPAP, BRAFV600E) and anaplastic carcinoma (8505C) cells were exposed to Roundup® Original DI (6.5-6500 µg/L) for 24 and 48 hours. Cell viability was assessed using trypan blue exclusion and …
