AmpC and extended spectrum beta-lactamases production among urinary isolates from a tertiary care hospital in Lalitpur, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Production of AmpC and extended spectrum beta-lactamases among urinary isolates has created a serious problem to the successful management of the urinary tract infection. The main purpose of this study was to determine the rates of the extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production and AmpC beta-lactamase (ABL) production among urinary isolates. RESULTS: Among total 564 urinary isolates, 514 (91.1%) were gram negative bacilli and 50 (8.9%) were gram positive cocci. E. coli (76.1%) was the most common bacteria isolated. Staphylococcus aureus (6.7%) was the predominant gram posi

Design, synthesis and activity against drug-resistant bacteria evaluation of C-20, C-23 modified 5-O-mycaminosyltylonolide derivatives.

With the increasing incidence of antibiotic resistance, there is an urgent need to develop new antibiotics with excellent activity against d … ria, and non mutagenic. More importantly, compound C-2 displayed high antimicrobial potency against Gram-positive bacteria in a murine model, and was found to be more efficient than tildipirosin. Thus, compound C-2 had great potential as a promising lead compound for the treatment of bacterial infection.

Vancomycin resistance in gram-positive infections: evolutionary strategies of survival.

Vancomycin is a critical glycopeptide antibiotic for treating severe infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, particularly MRSA and Clostridioides difficile, by inhibiting cell wall synthesis through binding to D-Ala-D-Ala termini of peptidoglycan precursors. Resistance has emerged in Enterococcus spp (VRE) and Staphylococcus spp, (VISA/VRSA) through acquisition of van operons, precursor modification (D-Ala-D-Lac/D-Ser), cell wall thickening, biofilm formation, and regulatory mutations, leading to treatment failures and increased morbidity. Global genomic surveillance reveals ongoing clona…

Slow-growing and fastidious uropathogens in hospitalized patients: an up-to-date review.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections and a major cause of healthcare-associated infections. Although Escherichia coli remains the most common uropathogen, an increasing number of slow-growing Gram-positive bacteria are now recognized as important causes of UTIs. These include Aerococcus spp. Actinotignum (formerly Actinobaculum) schaalii, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Alloscardovia omnicolens, Corynebacterium urealyticum and Gardnerella vaginalis. Historically underdiagnosed or misidentified, these organisms are now better detected due to advances in diag…

Review: dalbavancin--a novel lipoglycopeptide antimicrobial for gram positive pathogens.

Glycopeptide antibiotics represent an important class of microbial compounds produced by several genera of actinomycetes. The emergence of resistance to glycopeptides among enterococci and staphylococci has prompted the search for second-generation drugs of this class and semi-synthetic derivatives are currently under clinical trials. Antimicrobial resistance among gram-positive organisms has been increasing steadily during the past several decades. Dalbavancin, a novel lipoglycopeptide, has a mechanism of action similar to that of other glycopeptides. It has in vitro activity against a variet

Bacteremia in patients suffering from cirrhosis.

In a five-year retrospective study, there were 57 episodes of bacteremia among 1623 admissions (3.5%) of patients suffering from cirrhosis. Gram-positive bacteria were found in 70% of the episodes, gram-negative bacteria in 30%. All of the gram-positive bacteria found were fully sensitive to methicillin and to gentamicin. The gram-negative bacteria found were all sensitive to gentamicin, but only 50% were sensitive to ampicillin. The distribution between gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria was the same, irrespective of whether the patients acquired the infection inside or outside the hosp…

Muscle-inspired MXene/PVA hydrogel with high toughness and photothermal therapy for promoting bacteria-infected wound healing.

The process of wound healing is often accompanied by bacterial infection, which is a serious threat to human health. The abuse of antibiotics in traditional therapy aggravates the resistance of bacteria and gradually reduces the therapeutic effect. Therefore, it is important to develop effective antibacterial dressings to promote wound healing and prevent infection. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is considered a quick and reliable method of suppressing bacterial infections without developing drug resistance. The unique network structure and high water retention of hydrogel help wound healing. Insp

Models versus pathogens: how conserved is the FtsZ in bacteria?

Combating anti-microbial resistance by developing alternative strategies is the need of the hour. Cell division, particularly FtsZ, is being extensively studied for its potential as an alternative target for anti-bacterial therapy. Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli are the two well-studied models for research on FtsZ, the leader protein of the cell division machinery. As representatives of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, respectively, these organisms have provided an extensive outlook into the process of cell division in rod-shaped bacteria. However, research on other shapes of
