PURPOSE: To investigate the possible prognostic factors of survival outcomes in patients with granulocytic sarcoma (GS).
METHODS: We retrospectively investigated the prognostic factors determining survival in 24 patients with GS using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis followed by log rank tests. We evaluated gender, age, location, GS antedating leukemia, underlying disorders, treatment type and stem cell transplantation.
RESULTS: The 5-year survival rate for the patients with GS was 21%. The patients undergoing chemotherapy had a significantly longer survival time compared to those who did not

Granulocytic sarcoma (GS), an uncommon solid extramedullary tumour, should be considered even in the absence of leukaemia, as delay in diagnosis and treatment worsens the prognosis. We present a GS (single humeral bone lesion) in a non-leukaemia patient, treated with intensive AML (Acute Myeloid Leukaemia) chemotherapy and sequential radiotherapy, in complete response 26 months after diagnosis, confirmed by histopathology and without leukaemia progression.

Chronic systemic (hepatosplenic) candidiasis (CSC) is a syndrome of invasive candidiasis characterized by fever without localizing signs or symptoms. It occurs predominantly in patients with acute leukemia, after prolonged severe neutropenia. We report a young woman who underwent extensive chemotherapy for granulocytic sarcoma of the ovary; CSC then developed in this patient. She was successfully treated with fluconazole and liposomal amphotericin B. Clinical presentation, diagnostic problems, and the current successful treatment with fluconazole and liposomal amphotericin B are discussed.

Medical records of 3 dogs from North Carolina and 3 dogs from Virginia with ehrlichial morulae in circulating neutrophils were studied retrospectively. BACKGROUND: Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis is a potentially fatal tick-borne infection that has recently been described.
