Factors influencing sanitation and hygiene practices among students in a public university in Bangladesh.

INTRODUCTION: Improved hygiene and sanitation practices in educational settings are effective for the prevention of infections, controlling the transmission of pathogens, and promoting good health. Bangladesh has made remarkable advances in improving higher education in recent decades. Over a hundred universities were established to expand higher education facilities across the country. Hundreds of thousands of graduate students spend time in university settings during their studies. However, little is known about the sanitation and hygiene practice of the university-going population. This stu

Lesbians' attitudes and beliefs regarding overweight and weight reduction.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: This article presents data on attitudes and beliefs about overweight/weight reduction in lesbians. The project was developed to have information on which to base future culturally sensitive interventions to reduce cardiovascular risk in lesbians. BACKGROUND: Lesbians have been found to have high rates of obesity/overweight and to be more accepting of it. Researchers have hypothesised that this is attributed to different attitudes towards body weight and shape in lesbians than heterosexuals. Little is known about acceptable ways to intervene to decrease cardiovascular risk i

Mammography screening in African American women: evaluating the research.

BACKGROUND: Notwithstanding some controversy regarding the benefits of screening mammography, it is generally assumed that the effects are the same for women of all race/ethnic groups. Yet evidence for its efficacy from clinical trial studies comes primarily from the study of white women. It is likely that mammography is equally efficacious in white and African American women when applied under relatively optimal clinical trial conditions, but in actual practice African Americans may not be receiving equal benefit, as reflected in their later stage at diagnosis and greater mortality. METHODS:

Wegener's granulomatosis associated with vasculitis of the temporal artery: report of five cases.

Between January 1973 and October 1991 at the Mayo Clinic, 5 of 345 patients with Wegener's granulomatosis initially had features suggestive of giant cell arteritis and subsequently were found to have biopsy-proven vasculitis of the temporal artery. All five patients were older than 60 years of age and had jaw claudication, sudden loss of vision, severe headache with or without diplopia, or polymyalgia rheumatica at the time of initial examination. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was high at the time of onset of symptoms in four patients (and unavailable in one patient). A temporal artery bi

Integrated and sustainable community approach to malaria prevention in Gulu District, Northern Uganda.

OBJECTIVES: About one-half of the world's population is endangered by malaria, particularly those in underdeveloped countries. Because of poor prevention measures, in 2023, the WHO Africa region accounted for 95% of cases and 96% of deaths. Malaria is a prevalent tropical disease with high morbidity, mortality, and economic and social impact. The WHO recommends integrated vector management for malaria control, which has shown promise in reducing the diseas e burden. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative study in Unyama and Koro subcounties in Gulu District. We collected data fro

Elimination of the Opioid Sliding Scale Is Associated with Improved Opioid Stewardship Metrics.

BACKGROUND: Hospitals traditionally use an opioid sliding scale, prescribing lower doses for pain scores of 4-6 and higher doses for pain score 7-10. The authors hypothesized that elimination of the opioid sliding scale and implementation of additional electronic health record (EHR) "nudges" could improve adoption of best practices and improve opioid stewardship metrics. METHODS: Focus groups with key stakeholders were employed to design, implement, and evaluate the intervention. The intervention used the EHR to eliminate the conventional opioid sliding scale with a novel order set favoring n

Peer-led versus routine health education for schistosomiasis knowledge improvement among primary school students in Wuhan, China.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), remains a public health concern in China. Health education is a fundamental intervention for its control. Even in transmission-interrupted areas like Wuhan, sustained awareness is crucial. However, recent literature on school-based interventions evaluating knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) among children in such areas is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of peer-led education versus routine health education in improving schistosomiasis-related KAP among elementary students in a

"I don't know what I'm feeling for": young women's beliefs about breast cancer risk and experiences of breast awareness.

BACKGROUND: Younger women are often diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. Beliefs about risk are instrumental in motivating many health protective behaviours, but there may be confusion around which behaviour is appropriate to detect breast cancer earlier. Breast awareness, defined as an understanding of how the breasts look and feel so changes can be identified early, is widely recommended. In contrast, breast self-examination involves palpation using a specified method. We aimed to investigate young women's beliefs about their risk and experiences of breast awareness. METHODS: Thirty-seven
