An animal model permitting study of congenital infections with cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been developed in guinea pigs. Classic experimental immunologic orchitis was induced in guinea pigs by injection of homologous testis homogenate in complete Freund's adjuvant. Blood samples were obtained periodically for 45 days and the animals were hemicastrated on the 8th day after sensitization. A radioimmunoassay method was used for the detection of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) in the sera of 112 Papua New Guinean patients who had undergone liver biopsy. Sera from 69 normal subjects and 20 hospital patients were also tested. Alpha fetoprotein was found to be elevated above normal levels in many of these subjects, but particularly in those suffering from viral hepatitis, cirrhosis and primary liver cell carcinoma (PLC). The transmission and serial propagation of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease from man to guinea pigs are reported. Specific delayed-type hypersensitivity was induced in guinea pigs with bovine albumin + complete Freund adjuvant, bovine gamma globulin + complete Freund adjuvant and BCG vaccine. Reports were received on 364 of the unknown number of maternal deaths that occurred in Papua New Guinea during the two years, 1 January, 1971 to 31 December, 1972. Postpartum haemorrhage accounted for 39 per cent of the deaths, puerperal sepsis for 19 per cent and associated conditions for 14 per cent. In 13 per cent of cases the cause of death could not be ascertained.
