Modest association between health literacy and risk for peripheral vascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Health literacy plays a crucial role in managing chronic health conditions. Previous studies have revealed the positive relationship between health literacy and diabetes knowledge but few studies have focused on peripheral vascular disease (PVD) in diabetes in relation to health literacy in diabetes management. This study investigated the relationship between the risk for PVD and health literacy level with other determining factors among patients with type 2 diabetes. METHOD: We conducted a survey on health literacy using the Mandarin Multidimensional Health Literacy Questionnaire

The education of family caregivers as an ethical issue.

Family caregiving represents the first and predominant source of care for 75% to 80% of people with chronic illness in industrialized countries. They have a fundamental role in assisting, providing care, and support to their relatives throughout all the history of the illness. Despite the significant value of informal caregiving, studies consistently report unmet needs among informal caregivers, particularly with regard to obtaining the information and education necessary to care for an older adult experiencing a chronic health condition. Health care professionals talk to patients and their re

Standardizing Disaster Health Data Visualization Using Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources in Indonesia: Dashboard Development and Technical Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Health data management during disasters enables responders to assess the needs of survivors, efficiently allocate resources, and monitor survivors' health conditions. However, government agencies need to interpret health data in real time during disasters because the volume and complexity of such data can hinder timely decision-making. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to develop a visual interface for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)-based data from various sources, using the daily report form of the World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Medical Teams Minimu

Livestock Farm Recovery Following Bushfire in South-Eastern Australia: Impacts on Cattle and Sheep Health and Management.

Severe bushfires in South-Eastern Australia during the summer of 2019/2020 killed tens of thousands of livestock, while many more survived on fire-affected properties. At the time, the literature on bushfire and livestock in Australia primarily described animals with burns. The mid- to long-term health effects, if any, of fire exposure and the effectiveness of recovery activities for surviving animals and farm enterprises were rarely reported. This study aimed to describe the key impacts of bushfire exposure on the health, welfare, and management of surviving cattle and sheep to inform recomme

Older adults' pain descriptions.

The purpose of this study was to describe the types of pain information described by older adults with chronic osteoarthritis pain. Pain descriptions were obtained from older adults' who participated in a post-test-only double-blind study testing how the phrasing of health care practitioners' pain questions affected the amount of communicated pain information. The 207 community-dwelling older adults were randomized to respond to either the open-ended or the closed-ended pain question. They viewed and orally responded to a computer-displayed videotape of a practitioner asking them the respectiv

Integrating Medication Leaflets Utilizing FHIR and an LLM-Based Question-Answer Pipeline in a Mobile Application.

In the European Union, all medications must include a paper-based medication leaflet providing essential information. However, challenges with paper leaflets have driven efforts toward digitization and standardization. This paper presents an automated extraction, digitization, and standardization pipeline for medication leaflet information, integrated into a mobile medication management application. The automated extraction is using an LLM-based question-answer pipeline. Extracted information was standardized through template-based mapping to FHIR resources, where LLM-structured content was in

Staying moving, staying strong: Protocol for developing culturally appropriate information for Aboriginal people with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and gout.

INTRODUCTION: Addressing disparities in arthritis care is an important yet unmet health need for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia (respectfully Aboriginal people herewith). Despite the significant prevalence and burden of arthritis within Aboriginal communities, access to care for arthritis is low. One means to reduce existing disparities in health care is to address current challenges relating to the appropriateness and acceptability of health care information resources for Aboriginal people. Health information sources can help to empower patients and their families t

Representation of Tinnitus in the US Newspaper Media and in Facebook Pages: Cross-Sectional Analysis of Secondary Data.

BACKGROUND: When people with health conditions begin to manage their health issues, one important issue that emerges is the question as to what exactly do they do with the information that they have obtained through various sources (eg, news media, social media, health professionals, friends, and family). The information they gather helps form their opinions and, to some degree, influences their attitudes toward managing their condition. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand how tinnitus is represented in the US newspaper media and in Facebook pages (ie, social media) using text pattern a

Digitally Integrated Disease Management System in Rwanda: Community Healthcare Worker Perspectives.

As digital health tools are increasingly deployed to support community-based primary healthcare, understanding frontline user experiences is critical for effective implementation and scale-up. Here, community health workers' (CHWs) perspectives on the digitally integrated disease management system (d-IDS) in Rwanda are discussed. The d-IDS intervention was intended to improve the cost-effectiveness of community-based screening, patient management, and disease surveillance through a mobile digital platform. Before implementation, user acceptance testing and cascade training prepared CHWs, their

Development and acceptability of ViviendoPositivos: A culturally tailored telenovela (soap opera) intervention to improve self-management among Latinos with HIV.

Because people with HIV are living longer, there is a growing need for effective health self-management interventions. An urgent gap in care for Latino people with HIV (LWH) is the lack of culturally adapted interventions to support their health information needs. To respond to this need, we developed ViviendoPositivos, a culturally tailored telenovela (soap opera) intervention to promote HIV self-management among LWH. We used a mixed methods approach to gather data for the development of the intervention from 24 Spanish or English-speaking LWHs aged ≥ 18 years. Telenovela vignettes were co-cr

A pilot-wellness-informed ecological framework for human-autonomy teaming in future fighter aviation.

Future fighter operations are expected to combine increasingly capable autonomy, collaborative aircraft, dense sensor information, and sustained physiological and cognitive demands. This Perspective proposes a pilot-wellness-informed ecological framework in which the pilot, a pilot-specific digital twin, an intelligent flight-management system, the aircraft, and external agents are treated as interdependent elements within a systems-of-systems framework. The framework does not replace situation awareness, distributed cognition, joint cognitive systems, adaptive automation, or human-autonomy te

Microneedle biosensors: from molecular recognition to intelligent diagnostics.

Accurate acquisition of disease-associated molecular information is increasingly essential for disease diagnosis and health management. However, conventional biomarker detection is typically invasive and highly dependent on laboratory analysis, limiting its applicability to continuous, real-time, and personalized health monitoring. Microneedle (MN) biosensors can access disease-related molecular information in interstitial fluid (ISF) in a minimally invasive manner, providing a promising approach for dynamic molecular monitoring. Recent advances in micro/nano manufacturing technologies, materi
