Epidemiology of hepetitis C infection, ERHA/HSE Eastern region.

Hepatitis C became statutorily notifiable in Ireland on 1 January 2004. Prior to 2004, only hepatitis A and hepatitis B were notifiable as distinct types of hepatitis. A third category notifiable under the Infectious Diseases Regulations 1981 was "viral hepatitis unspecified". The majority of cases notified under this heading were thought to be due to infection with hepatitis C Virus (HCV). Between January 1 2004 and December 31 2005, the Department of Public Health HSE Eastern Region, received notification of 2,014 cases of HCV infection (2004, 941 cases, 2005 1,073 cases). Psychosocial stressors of adolescents with E-cigarette, or vaping, product-use associated lung injury: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Adolescent electronic cigarette (EC) use has reached epidemic rates and has been linked to numerous mental health and psychosocial stressors (PS). There is limited qualitative data on PS for adolescents with e-cigarette, or vaping, product-use associated lung injury (EVALI), a severe complication of EC use. METHODS: All patients hospitalized at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas from 2018 to 2022 and met CDC case definitions for EVALI were included in the analysis. PS were extracted from the electronic health record and analyzed for recurring themes using th

A Qualitative Exploration of the Experiences of Veterans Who Are Serving Sentences in Custody.

The focus on veterans in research is not a novel topic; however, the majority of studies are related to trauma, employment, mental health, suicide, and substance misuse. The criminal justice system involvement with veterans is a topic that has yet to be examined to a great extent. This study, conducted with adult male prisoners, elicited information from six veterans regarding their experiences of being in the armed forces, leaving the armed forces, and becoming involved in the criminal justice system. Responses were evaluated using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) and three main

Substance use in adolescents with mental illness in Durban, South Africa.

Comorbid substance use in adolescents with mental illness is often an indicator of poor treatment outcome. This study aims to determine the prevalence of, and associated risk factors for, substance use in adolescents with mental illness attending a mental health service. Data was collected from hospital records of 162 adolescents, using a structured data sheet, over a two-year period. Substance use was more significant in older adolescents and those with severe mental illness. Sixty-two (38.3%) adolescents used substances. Thirty-seven (38.1%) male adolescents reported substance use compared t

Vital signs: communication between health professionals and their patients about alcohol use--44 states and the District of Columbia, 2011.

INTRODUCTION: Excessive alcohol use accounted for an estimated 88,000 deaths in the United States each year during 2006-2010, and $224 billion in economic costs in 2006. Since 2004, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has recommended alcohol misuse screening and behavioral counseling (also known as alcohol screening and brief intervention [ASBI]) for adults to address excessive alcohol use; however, little is known about the prevalence of its implementation. ASBI will also be covered by many health insurance plans because of the Affordable Care Act. METHODS: CDC analyzed Behavior

A randomised controlled trial of a lengthened and multi-disciplinary consultation model in a socially deprived community: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: There has been little development of the general practice consultation over the years, and many aspects of the present consultation do not serve communities with multiple health and social problems well. Many of the problems presenting to general practitioners in socio-economically disadvantaged areas are not amenable to a purely medical solution, and would particularly benefit from a multidisciplinary approach. Socio-economic deprivation is also associated with those very factors (more psychosocial problems, greater need for health promotion, more chronic diseases, more need for p

The Medium-Term Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown on Referrals to Secondary Care Mental Health Services: A Controlled Interrupted Time Series Study.

To date, there is a paucity of information regarding the effect of COVID-19 or lockdown on mental disorders. We aimed to quantify the medium-term impact of lockdown on referrals to secondary care mental health clinical services. We conducted a controlled interrupted time series study using data from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT), UK (catchment population ~0.86 million). The UK lockdown resulted in an instantaneous drop in mental health referrals but then a longer-term acceleration in the referral rate (by 1.21 referrals per day per day, 95% confidence interval [CI

Patterns of concurrent substance use among adolescent nonmedical ADHD stimulant users.

OBJECTIVES: There are growing concerns about nonmedical use of ADHD stimulants among adolescents; yet, little is known whether there exist heterogeneous subgroups among adolescents with nonmedical ADHD stimulant use according to their concurrent substance use. METHODS: We used latent class analysis (LCA) to examine patterns of past-year problematic substance use (meeting any criteria for abuse or dependence) in a sample of 2203 adolescent participants from the National Surveys on Drug Use and Health 2006-2011 who reported past-year nonmedical use of ADHD stimulants. Alcohol and other substance use, mental health treatment use, and perceived unmet treatment need: Comparison between baby boomers and older adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As the baby boomers age, the number of older adults with comorbid substance use and mental disorders is projected to grow. Little research has examined the potential impact of substance use on older adults' mental health treatment use and unmet treatment need. This study examined these associations among the rapidly growing population of baby boomers and their older counterparts. METHODS: Data are from the 2008 to 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) (N = 18,443 respondents aged 50-64 and 11,191 aged 65 +). Age-combined and age-stratified logistic regr

Benzodiazepine prescribing behaviour and attitudes: a survey among general practitioners practicing in northern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Over-prescribing of benzodiazepines appears common in many countries, a better understanding of prescribing practices and attitudes may help develop strategies to reduce prescribing. This study aimed to evaluate benzodiazepine prescribing behaviour and attitudes in general practitioners practising in Chiang Mai and Lampoon, Thailand. METHODS: Questionnaire survey of general practitioners in community hospitals, to estimate: i) use of benzodiazepines for anxiety/insomnia, panic disorder, depression, essential hypertension, and uncomplicated low back pain and ii) views on the optima

Potentially avoidable hospitalisations in New Zealand, 1989-98.

OBJECTIVE: To describe potentially avoidable hospitalisation in New Zealand, including recent trends and variations between groups differentiated by age, gender, ethnicity and degree of deprivation. METHOD: Hospital discharges among people aged 0-74 years for the years 1989-98 were classified as 'potentially avoidable' or 'unavoidable' based on the ICD9-CMA code of the principal diagnosis. Potentially avoidable hospitalisations (PAH) were further subcategorised according to the intervention involved--primary prevention, ambulatory care or injury prevention. RESULTS: By 1998, one in three of

The sexual and reproductive health of women with mental illness: a primary care registry study.

The purpose of this study is to characterise the sexual and reproductive health risks associated with mental illness among women. This was a retrospective cohort study of 2,680,149 women aged 14 to 45 years in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, a UK primary care register, linked to 1,702,211 pregnancies that ended between the 1st January 1990 and 31st December 2017. Mental illness was identified in primary care and categorised into the following: common mental illness (depression/anxiety); addiction (alcohol/drug misuse); serious mental illness (affective/non-affective psychosis); other

Smoking and its treatment in addiction services: clients' and staff behaviour and attitudes.

BACKGROUND: High smoking prevalence has been observed among those misusing other substances. This study aimed to establish smoking behaviours and attitudes towards nicotine dependence treatment among clients and staff in substance abuse treatment settings. METHODS: Cross-sectional questionnaire survey of staff and clients in a convenience sample of seven community and residential addiction services in, or with links to, Europe's largest provider of mental health care, the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Survey items assessed smoking behaviour, motivation to quit, receipt of an

Identifying primary-care features associated with complex mental health difficulties.

AIM: The coded prevalence of complex mental health difficulties in electronic health records, such as personality disorder and dysthymia,is much lower than expected from population surveys. We aimed to identify features in primary care records that might be useful in promoting greater recognition of complex mental health difficulties. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We analysed Connected Bradford, an anonymised primary care database of approximately 1.15M citizens. We used multiple approaches to generate a large set of features representing multi-level collections of patient attributes across time and

Characteristics of trafficked adults and children with severe mental illness: a historical cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the mental health needs of trafficked people is limited; however, prevalence of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder is high among trafficked people who are in contact with shelter services. We aimed to investigate the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of trafficked people with severe mental illness. METHODS: We did a historical cohort study of trafficked people in contact with secondary mental health services in South London, UK, between Jan 1, 2006, and July 31, 2012. We searched and retrieved comprehensive clinical electronic health recor

Neighbourhood-level variations in psychosis prevalence and involuntary psychiatric admissions.

UNLABELLED: Studies have highlighted geographical variations in psychosis and involuntary psychiatric admissions. However, the association of neighbourhood-level factors on these variations remains underexplored. AIMS: To investigate geographical variations in psychosis prevalence and involuntary admissions, and associations with neighbourhood variables, in a cohort accessing secondary mental health services in South London. METHOD: We used de-identified patient data from the Clinical Records Interactive Search (South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust) linked to neighbourhood-level ex

Five Profiles of Adolescents at Elevated Risk for Suicide Attempts: Differences in Mental Health Service Use.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents at risk for suicide are highly heterogeneous in terms of psychiatric and social risk factors, yet there has been little systematic research on risk profiles, which would facilitate recognition and the matching of patients to services. Our primary study aims were to identify latent class profiles of adolescents with elevated suicide risk, and to examine the association of these profiles with mental health service use (MHSU). METHOD: Participants were 1,609 adolescents from the Emergency Department Screen for Teens at Risk for Suicide (ED-STARS) cohort. Participants compl
