Application of Helicobacter pylori stool antigen test to survey the updated prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The reported prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in Taiwan was 54.4% in 1992. An updated prevalence of H. pylori infection in asymptomatic adults is lacking in Taiwan. We aimed to assess the updated age-standardized prevalence of H. pylori infection in asymptomatic subjects and in patients with dyspepsia and to assess the accuracy of H. pylori stool antigen (HpSA) test for screening of H. pylori in Chinese population. METHODS: Asymptomatic adult subjects (N = 189) were screened for H. pylori infection using HpSA, serology, and 13 C-urea breath test (13 C-UBT) in 20

Effect of concurrent infection of Helicobacter pylori with Toxoplasma gondii infection on gastric pathology.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) are among the most prevalent foodborne parasitic and bacterial infections worldwide. However, the concurrent impact of coinfection on gastric pathology has yet to be studied in depth. The effect of coinfection generally either adds a synergetic or antagonistic impact; we aimed in the current work to assess the impact of T. gondii coinfection on the progression of H. pylori-associated gastric pathology and reporting H. pylori virulent strains. The study was conducted on 82 patients complaining of persistent gastrointe

Trends and Complication Rates in Ulcerative Colitis Patients With and Without Helicobacter pylori Infections.

Background Previous studies have shown an inverse relationship between ulcerative colitis (UC) and Helicobacter pylori infections (HPI). Though these two conditions have opposite geographic distributions, there may also be a physiological explanation for the decreased incidence of H. pylori infections in patients with UC. The purpose of this study is to analyze trends and complication rates of ulcerative colitis patients with and without HPI. Materials and methods The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was queried for patients with a primary diagnosis of UC, stratified by the presence of

Chlamydia pneumoniae and Helicobacter pylori infections and immunological profile of community-dwelling older adults.

Chronic bacterial infections are associated with changes in the immunosenescence process and immunological biomarkers can assist in monitoring these changes. The identification of this immunological profile is important because Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections are important factors of morbidity and mortality among the older adults. This study aimed to identify changes in the immunological profile in the presence of C. pneumoniae and H. pylori infections among community-dwelling older adults. This is a cross-sectional study that used data from

Helicobacter Pylori-Induced Gastric Infections: From Pathogenesis to Novel Therapeutic Approaches Using Silver Nanoparticles.

Helicobacter pylori is the first formally recognized bacterial carcinogen and the most important single digestive pathogen responsible for the induction of gastroduodenal diseases such as gastritis, peptic ulcer, and, finally, gastric neoplasia. The recently reported high rates of antimicrobial drug resistance hamper the current therapies of H. pylori, with therapeutic failure reaching up to 40% of patients. In this context, new treatment options and strategies are urgently needed, but the successful development of these new therapeutic tools is conditioned by the understanding of the high ada

Coinfection modulates inflammatory responses and clinical outcome of Helicobacter felis and Toxoplasma gondii infections.

The host immune response plays a critical role in determining disease manifestations of chronic infections. Inadequate immune response may fail to control infection, although in other cases the specific immune response may be the cause of tissue damage and disease. The majority of patients with chronic infections are infected by more than one organism yet the interaction between multiple active infections is not known, nor is the impact on disease outcome clear. Using the BALB/c strain of mice, we show that Toxoplasma gondii infection in a host infected with Helicobacter felis alters the natur

Concordance between breath test and histologic damage in Helicobacter pylori associated infections in infancy.

OBJECTIVE: the purpose of this study was to investigate the concordance between urea breath test values and the histological severity of gastric mucosa lesions in children. METHOD: forty children ranging in age from 3 to 17 years were examined endoscopically because of abdominal pain and positive breath test results. Histological status was determined by the intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate and by the depth of the damage. Histologically, four groups were considered: normal-appearing gastric mucosa (group 0), mild antrum gastritis (group 1), moderate antrum gastritis (group 2), and sev

Interleukin-8 genetic polymorphism and its relation to Helicobacter pylori infection and Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric diseases.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has a variety of clinical outcomes, and host genetic factors play an important role in this process. Cytokines are important factors in mediating and controlling the inflammatory process during H. pylori infection. Interleukin-8 (IL-8) plays a critical role in the epithelial cell response to H. pylori infection and the development of H. pylori-related gastric disorders. The IL-8 gene has an A/T base pair polymorphism in the promoter region (-251), which has been linked to an increase in interleukin production by gastric epithelial cells. In this contex

Outer Membrane Vesicles of Helicobacter pylori 7.13 as Adjuvants Promote Protective Efficacy Against Helicobacter pylori Infection.

Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori), a gram-negative bacterium in the human stomach with global prevalence, is relevant to chronic gastrointestinal diseases. Due to its increasing drug resistance and the low protective efficacy of some anti-H. pylori vaccines, it is necessary to find a suitable adjuvant to improve antigen efficiency. In our previous study, we determined that outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), a multicomponent secretion generated by gram-negative bacteria, of H. pylori were safe and could induce long-term and robust immune responses against H. pylori in mice. In this study, we employed

Helicobacter pylori infection occurs via close contact with infected individuals in early childhood.

BACKGROUND: The manner in which Helicobacter pylori is transmitted is of fundamental importance when considering strategies for its control, yet, to date, the exact mode of transmission remains uncertain. METHODS: The seroprevalence of H. pylori in a relatively isolated rural town in Japan (A-town) was examined to analyse the H. pylori infection route. The immunoglobulin G antibodies against H. pylori in 1684 subjects who had received public health examinations in A-town were determined with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The seroprevalence was compared in five areas according to the w
