Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a condition involving anemia and its related symptoms; it is caused by autoantibodies that bind and agglutinate red blood cells in areas susceptible to hypothermia, such as extremities exposed to cold temperatures. CAD is rare, with 5 to 20 human cases per million individuals. In this report, we describe a case of CAD in a previously healthy and experimentally naïve adult Indian rhesus macaque that was housed indoors and presented with blood in the urine. After our observations of hemoglobinuria and anemia led us to suspect CAD, we demonstrated that the macaque…

A 25 year old woman received daily injection of 0.6 mg atropine for seven days by the intra-venous route. In addition to fever, incomprehensible speech and alteration of sensorium she developed albuminuria, hemoglobinuria and myoglobinuria. A diagnosis of atropine-induced rhabdomyolysis was made on the basis of clinical presentations and investigations. Although, datura poisoning and intoxication with wild mushrooms are known to result in rhabdomyolysis, this can be considered to be the first case of atropine-induced rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria.

We present a case of extreme pancytopenia in a 27-year-old pregnant woman. The initial picture was compatible with a severe hematological problem in the category of aplastic anemia, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria or even acute leukemia. The further biochemical investigations revealed, however, a folate deficiency. Nowadays this is a very rare cause of pancytopenia. Next to this she also had a Vitamin B(12) deficiency due to intrinsic factor failure. The recent literature is discussed.

We reported our intensive care experience of a postpartum patient with HELLP syndrome. We administered haptoglobin immediately after the delivery in order to prevent renal insufficiency following hemoglobinuria. Continuous veno-venous hemofiltration was undertaken and plasma exchange was also employed to overcome hepatorenal insufficiency. After these procedures an improvement was observed in her hepatic and renal functions. Administration of haptoglobin and blood purification would be beneficial for patients complicated with HELLP syndrome.

An outbreak of acute hemolytic disease in a large flock of sheep resulted in a mortality of approximately 5% in lambs. A diagnosis of Leptospira interrogans serotype hardjo infection was established on the basis of the presence of leptospires in the urine of one lamb, serologic findings in a guinea pig inoculated with this urine, L. hardjo titers in lambs, and pathologic findings. Prominent necropsy findings included severe icterus, thin watery blood, dark red to black kidneys and severe hemoglobinuria.

Many clinical settings are associated with haemolysis, from rare conditions, such as paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria, to common interventions, such as mechanical circulatory support and blood transfusion. The toxic effects of circulating free haemoglobin, haem, and iron are becoming increasingly understood and include an increased risk of thrombotic complications. This review summarizes the epidemiological evidence for an association between haemolysis and thrombosis and explores potential underlying mechanisms. New insights into the role haem plays in inflammatory signalling and in gener
