Regional distribution and incidence of human papillomavirus infections among heterosexual men and women with multiple sexual partners: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess prevalence, incidence and potential risk factors of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection among heterosexual men and women with multiple partners and to identify niches of HPV-infection. DESIGN: A prospective study of heterosexual men and women with multiple partners attending an STD clinic as participants in a study on HIV from May 1988 until January 1991. Routine STD examination and physical examination using colposcopy were performed, interviews with standardised questionnaires were administered. Specimens for HPV DNA detection by polymerase chain reaction were collecte

Two methods for assessing the risk-factor composition of the HIV-1 epidemic in heterosexual women: southeast England, 1988-1991.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of HIV-1 in the heterosexual population in southeast England between 1988 and 1991 was examined using two methods. DESIGN AND METHODS: First, district neonatal seroprevalence was compared on a geographical basis to social and demographic variables reflecting risk-factor prevalence. Second, over the same period eight children who developed AIDS within the first 12 months of life were born. RESULTS: The differences in seroprevalence between districts could be explained by the proportion of livebirths to women born in parts of Africa. An estimated 92% of neonatal serop

Heterosexual and homosexual transmission of hepatitis C virus: relation with hepatitis B virus and human immunodeficiency virus type 1.

A seroprevalence study was carried out on 1757 outpatients consecutively seen in a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in order to evaluate the sexual transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV). A total of 1442 consenting patients were tested for hepatitis C, hepatitis B and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HCV, HBV, HIV-1) antibodies. The relations between anti-HCV, anti-HBc and anti-HIV-1 were studied. Of 73 anti-HCV positive reactions, 45 (61.6%) were confirmed by the recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA). The proportion of individuals with anti-HCV was higher in outpatients with a his

Heterosexual transmission of hepatitis delta virus in the general population of an area endemic for hepatitis B virus infection: a prospective study.

A prospective study was conducted in 268 consecutive patients with overt hepatitis to examine the transmission of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) in the general population of an area hyperendemic for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The patients were interviewed extensively for potential risk factors associated with transmission. Of the 203 patients with type B hepatitis, 34 (30 men, 4 women) showed serologic evidence of acute HDV infection (HDV+ group), while the other 169 did not (HDV- group). Of the 30 HDV+ men, 27 (90%) had had sexual intercourse with prostitutes within 3 months of admission

Short-term patterns of pulsatile luteinizing hormone secretion do not differ between male-to-female transsexuals and heterosexual men.

This study tested whether there is a difference in the pulsatile LH secretion between male-to-female transsexuals and eugonadal heterosexual men. The mean serum LH concentrations, the LH pulse frequency, and the LH pulse amplitude were compared between a group of eight male-to-female transsexuals and a group of 22 heterosexual men. Blood samples for LH determinations were collected every 10 min for seven hours. 17-beta-estradiol and testosterone were measured at the beginning of each test. There were no significant differences between the heterosexual and transsexual group in LH pulse frequenc

Heterosexually acquired HTLV-III/LAV disease (AIDS-related complex and AIDS). Epidemiologic evidence for female-to-male transmission.

Thirty-seven percent (15/41) of patients with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III) disease (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS] or AIDS-related complex) sequentially evaluated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC, acquired this infection from a partner(s) of the opposite sex. Demographic features of these 15 patients (ten males and five females) differed substantially from those for patients reported to the Centers for Disease Control. Heterosexual contact with partners who developed AIDS or who were at risk for AIDS was confirmed in six patients. The remaini

More Attractive, More Heterosexual, Less Sexual? Perceptions of People with Physical Disabilities Across Observer Sex and Sexual Orientation.

Appearance-based cues are used to inform social evaluations of others' likely sexual orientation and preferences. For people with physical disabilities (PWPD), whose appearances may be perceived as disrupting dominant norms of gender and sexuality, this reliance on visual cues, when combined with pervasive stereotypes of asexuality, may contribute to sexual discrimination and disenfranchisement. Despite this, quantitative research examining perceptions of the sexuality of PWPD remains limited. Therefore, the present study investigated how physical disability influenced perceptions of sociosexu

Determinants of HIV testing intentions among heterosexual men in the Bolgatanga Municipality of Ghana: Evidence from the theory of planned behaviour.

Understanding intention to test for HIV reflects readiness for action and provides an opportunity for intervention before behaviour is actualised. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), HIV testing remains low. While numerous studies have identified factors influencing HIV testing, less is understood about how these factors shape the intention to test. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), this study examined HIV testing intention among heterosexual males in Bolgatanga Municipality. A community-based cross-sectional survey included 480 heterosexual males. Data were collected using structured

Sexual attitudes and conversations among heterosexual older adults in China: findings from the sexual well-being (SWELL) study.

BACKGROUND: Sexuality is a key component of psycho-physical well-being among older adults. We aimed to understand sexual attitudes and conversations, and their correlates among older adults. METHODS: This study was based on a cross-sectional survey conducted from June 2020 to December 2022 in China. Community-dwelling heterosexual older adults aged ≥50 were recruited. Sexual attitudes included believing that sex is harmful to health and supporting sex education. The conversation was defined as talking about sex with a partner. Logistic regressions were used to assess the correlates of sexual

Deficits in loss-related feedback processing and risky decision-making among heterosexual males at risk for problematic pornography use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic pornography use (PPU) has been associated with impaired risk-based decision-making, possibly stemming from disrupted feedback processing. However, the underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined behavioral risk-taking and feedback-related electrophysiological responses in individuals at risk for PPU. METHODS: Thirty-five male university students at risk for PPU (M = 20.51, SD = 0.89) and thirty-four matched controls (M = 20.79, SD = 1.70) completed the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) while EEG data were recorded. Relational inequalities and loneliness: How diverse family forms shape loneliness among heterosexual and LGBTQ+ adults in later life.

OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is a major concern in later life, yet disparities between heterosexual and LGBTQ+ older adults remain insufficiently understood. This study examined how families of origin and families of choice relate to loneliness among adults aged 50 +, and whether these associations differ by sexual orientation. DESIGN: Data were collected via online surveys in Israel and compared two groups: LGBTQ+ and heterosexual adults aged 50 +. PARTICIPANTS: The analytic sample included 948 participants. MEASUREMENTS: Loneliness was assessed using the brief UCLA Loneliness Scale. Participant

Sexual and mental health disparities among young sexual minority women compared to exclusively heterosexual women: a national study.

INTRODUCTION: Young sexual minority women (YSMW)'s sexual health is often overlooked in research, with most studies focusing on men who have sex with men or transgender women. METHODS: This study compares the sexual and mental health of young lesbians and bisexual women with exclusively heterosexual women using data from a 2017 Swiss study on young adults' sexual health and behaviors. The sample includes 2,316 sexually active cisgender women. Bivariate analyses were conducted, followed by a multinomial regression using exclusively heterosexual women as the reference group. RESULTS: Sexual or

Considerations of HIV PrEP Among Heterosexually Active Women and Men: Results from a Qualitative Study in New York City.

Although 22% of new HIV diagnoses in the USA are attributed to heterosexual contact, uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains low among heterosexually active individuals and information about PrEP considerations in this population is limited. We report on a cross-sectional qualitative study exploring attitudes toward PrEP among a diverse sample of 50 heterosexually active cisgender adults (31 women, 19 men) in New York City. Approximately, two-thirds (34) had previously heard of PrEP, but none had used it. Many learned about PrEP through marketing and social interactions, leading them

Integration of PrEP dispensing with HIV self-testing among heterosexual men in Sub-Saharan Africa: protocol for a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) continues to be the hub of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic, globally. Despite several attempts to meet their HIV prevention needs, men continue to have high rates of HIV infection. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective treatment that, when taken as prescribed, can be very efficient in preventing and reducing the risk of HIV acquisition. HIV self-testing (HIVST) has been demonstrated to be acceptable among men in SSA. As such, this review aims to explore the existing literature on the integration of PrEP dispensing with HIVST among men in SSA. METHOD

Social networks and loneliness differ between LGBTIA and cis-heterosexual persons: results from a two-wave survey in Germany.

Current research suggests LGBTIA persons to be lonelier than cis-heterosexual persons. While they rely more on friends than on family as support network, their social network and weekly contact to family and friends, as well as the association between the social network and loneliness have not been fully explored yet. The aim of this analysis was to examine differences in the social network between LGBTIA and cis-heterosexual persons in Germany, and how these differences affect loneliness. Data was collected through an online survey conducted in two independent waves in March/April 2020 and in

Heterosexual parents' experiences of their donor-conceived children's search for and/or contact with their donors in New Zealand prior to identity-release provisions.

Research suggests that donor conceived persons (DCP) may not only be interested in their genetic information, but in meeting donors and other genetically related individuals. While parental disclosure to donor conceived children (DCC) appears to be increasing, limited research examines the impact of disclosure and donor linking for DCP and parents. This research explores the experiences of nine heterosexual parents in New Zealand who mostly conceived prior to identity-release provisions and whose DCC have searched for or had donor contact. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews and
