Effects of aging on the responsiveness of the human cardiac sympathetic nerves to stressors.

BACKGROUND: Aging increases human sympathetic nervous activity at rest. Beause of the probable importance of neural stress responses in the heart as triggers for clinical end points of coronary artery disease, it is pertinent to investigate whether sympathetic nervous responses to stresses are increased by aging. METHODS AND RESULTS: We applied kinetic methods for measuring the fluxes to plasma of neurochemicals relevant to sympathetic neurotransmission in younger (aged 20 to 30 years) and older (aged 60 to 75 years) healthy men during mental stress (difficult mental arithmetic), isometric ex

Arrhythmia and reduced heart rate variability during pregnancy in women with congenital heart disease and previous reparative surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Tachyarrhythmia during pregnancy may have an adverse effect on the mother and the fetus. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a significant marker of autonomic nervous function and may predict tachyarrhythmia. HRV and incidence of arrhythmia in women with repaired congenital heart disease (CHD) during pregnancy were examined. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with repaired CHD (35 pregnancies, age: 26+/-3.5 years at their first pregnancy, 22+/-6.2 years post-repair) and 19 healthy pregnant volunteers (controls, 19 pregnancies, age: 28+/-5.5 years) were enrolled. Holter monitoring and labo

Influence of sleep apnea on autonomic nervous activity and QT dispersion in patients with essential hypertension and old myocardial infarction.

Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is an important cardiovascular risk factor in patients with hypertension or myocardial infarction (MI). We evaluated the influence of SAS on autonomic nervous activity and QT dispersion in patients with hypertension or coronary artery disease with old MI. A portable sleep polygraph was attached to 30 healthy volunteers (N group), 30 patients with essential hypertension (HT group), and 30 patients with old myocardial infarction (MI group) to serially record oronasal respiration, tracheal sound, thoracic respiratory movement, and percutaneous arterial oxygen saturation

Exploratory study of heart rate variability among participants with opioid use disorder inducted on gabapentin versus placebo during outpatient buprenorphine-assisted transition to injection naltrexone.

We assessed heart rate variability (HRV) as a measure of autonomic nervous system function during an ongoing double blind, placebo-controlled, trial of adjunct gabapentin during a buprenorphine-assisted taper and transition to injection naltrexone to explore how adjunctive pharmacotherapy and time influence autonomic nervous system activity and whether HRV metrics are predictive of treatment outcomes. Individuals with opioid use disorder who began their participation in an ongoing trial of adjunct gabapentin during an outpatient 10-day buprenorphine-assisted transition to injection naltrexone

A Selective Bottleneck Shapes the Evolutionary Mutant Spectra of Enterovirus A71 during Viral Dissemination in Humans.

RNA viruses accumulate mutations to rapidly adapt to environmental changes. Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) causes various clinical manifestations with occasional severe neurological complications. However, the mechanism by which EV-A71 evolves within the human body is unclear. Utilizing deep sequencing and haplotype analyses of viruses from various tissues of an autopsy patient, we sought to define the evolutionary pathway by which enterovirus A71 evolves fitness for invading the central nervous system in humans. Broad mutant spectra with divergent mutations were observed at the initial infection si

Central sleep apnoea and heart failure (Part I).

Central sleep apnoea (CSA) in congestive heart failure is sleep state dependent and occurs typically in stages I and II of non-REM sleep. The pre-requisites are hypocapnia and some prolongation of the circulation time. It is not certain whether abnormalities in after-discharge activity in the brainstem are also important. The presence of CSA in patients with left ventricular dysfunction is a poor prognostic sign and associated with a higher mortality in that group compared to age, sex and ejection fraction matched patients with congestive cardiac failure alone. It is reasonable to speculate th

Autonomic dysfunction in non-critically ill COVID-19 patients during the acute phase of disease: an observational, cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence is emerging about an extra-pulmonary involvement of SARS-CoV-2, including the nervous system. Autonomic dysfunction in patients recovering from acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been recently described. Dysautonomic symptoms have been reported in the acute phase of the disease, but clear evidence is lacking, especially in the non-critical forms of the infection. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of dysautonomia in acute, non-critically ill COVID-19 patients. METHODS: In this observational, cross-sectional study, we compared 38 non

Clinical, radiographic characteristics and immunomodulating changes in neuromyelitis optica with extensive brain lesions.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) shows various brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities with recurrent central nervous system (CNS) attacks, although predominantly affecting the spinal cord and optic nerve. However, NMO with extensive involvement of the brain has infrequently been studied. We investigated the clinical, radiographic features and immunomodulating changes of NMO patients with extensive brain lesions (EBLs) in China. METHODS: NMO patients (including 16 NMO patients with EBLs and 53 NMO patients without EBLs) hospitalized during January 2006 and February 2010 wer

Microstructural integrity of corticospinal and medial lemniscus tracts: insights from diffusion tensor tractography of right-hand amputees.

Reductions in sensory and motor activity following unilateral upper limb amputation during adulthood are associated with widespread, activity-dependent reorganization of the gray matter and white matter through the central nervous system. Likewise, in cases of congenital limb absence there is evidence that limited afferent or efferent activity affects the structural integrity of white matter pathways serving the affected side. Evidence that the structural integrity of mature sensory and motor tracts controlling the lost upper limb exhibits similar activity dependence is, however, sparse and in

Cardiovascular consequences of clinical stroke.

In clinical stroke cardiovascular abnormalities are frequently neglected although they occur more often than it is generally assumed. However, cardiac arrhythmias, pathological ECG findings, and changes of circadian blood pressure patterns are significantly increased in patients with acute cerebrovascular lesions and are associated with an increased mortality. Several clinical studies have shown that cerebral infarctions may cause different cardiovascular abnormalities depending on the location and the size of the stroke. Hereby, the prolongation of the QT interval and the expansion of the QRS

Multiple functions of Maf in the regulation of cellular development and differentiation.

Cellular muscular aponeurotic fibrosarcoma (c-Maf) is a member of the large macrophage-activating factor family. C-Maf plays important roles in the morphogenetic processes and cellular differentiation of the lens, kidneys, liver, T cells and nervous system, and it is particularly important in pancreatic islet and erythroblastic island formation. However, the exact role of c-Maf remains to be elucidated. In this review, we summarize the research to clarify the functions of c-Maf in the cellular development and differentiation. The expression of c-Maf is higher in pancreatic duct cells than in p

Heart Rate Variability and Inflammatory Stress Response in Young African American Men: Implications for Cardiovascular Risk.

Background: African American men have a disproportionately higher incidence of and suffer greater severity and earlier death from cardiovascular disease (CVD). A common feature of many diseases, which disproportionately afflict disadvantaged African Americans, is inflammation. In particular, inflammation plays a decisive role in the pathogenesis of CVD in that persistent inflammation contributes to plaque evolution and destabilization. Adverse childhood experiences increase the risk for adult inflammatory based disease, particularly cardiovascular disease. This inflammatory burden becomes evid

A novel interaction between sympathetic overactivity and aberrant regulation of renin by miR-181a in BPH/2J genetically hypertensive mice.

Genetically hypertensive mice (BPH/2J) are hypertensive because of an exaggerated contribution of the sympathetic nervous system to blood pressure. We hypothesize that an additional contribution to elevated blood pressure is via sympathetically mediated activation of the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system. Our aim was to determine the contribution of the renin-angiotensin system and sympathetic nervous system to hypertension in BPH/2J mice. BPH/2J and normotensive BPN/3J mice were preimplanted with radiotelemetry devices to measure blood pressure. Depressor responses to ganglion blocker pento

sEMG-Based Muscle Synergy Analysis and Functional Driving Ratio for Quantitative Assessment During Robot-Assisted Upper-Limb Rehabilitation.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) provides a non-invasive measure of the neural drive transmitted from the central nervous system to muscles by capturing the spatiotemporal summation of motor unit action potentials at the skin surface, and is therefore widely used to study neuromuscular coordination during motor tasks. By reflecting neural drive transmitted from the central nervous system to peripheral muscles, sEMG provides valuable insights for investigating neuromuscular coordination during upper-limb motor tasks. Within the framework of modular motor control, muscle synergy analysis has been

[Arylsulfatase A--physico-chemical properties and the use of enzyme radioimmunoassay in medical diagnosis].

Arylsulfatase A was isolated from urine and human liver. The enzyme was homogeneous with respect to charge and had high specific activity--64 U/mg and 34 U/mg for arylsulfatase A from urine and liver respectively. The enzyme from urine as well as the liver one contained two nonidentical subunits with molecular weights varying about 5 kDa. Treatment of the enzyme from urine, liver and from placenta with endo-beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase F did not remove all carbohydrate from any subunit even in denaturing conditions. Deglycosylation of the enzyme with this one and other glycosidases under vario

Implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome.

The study investigated implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and its association with clinical parameters. Implicit memory refers to the influence of past experience on current behavior without conscious awareness of these experiences. Eighteen FMS patients and 25 healthy individuals accomplished a word-stem completion task. As possible factors mediating the expected impairment, pain severity, emotional disorders, and medication were taken into account. The patients displayed markedly reduced task performance and higher levels of depression and anxiety. Among the clinical fea
