In 1901, the first Epidural anesthesia via a caudal approach was independently described by two FrenchmanJean-Anthanase Sicard and Fernand Cathelin.. The Spanish military surgeon, Fidel Pagés Miravé, completed the lumbar approach successfully in 1921. The two possibilities for identification of the epidural space the "loss of resistance" technique and the technique of the "hanging drop" were developed by Achille Mario Dogliotti, an Italian, and Alberto Gutierrez, an Argentinean physician, at the same time. In 1956 John J. Bonica published the paramedian approach to the epidural space. As early

Although narcolepsy was first described in the late nineteenth century in Germany and France, much of the research on this disorder has been conducted at Stanford University, starting with Drs. William C. Dement and Christian Guilleminault in the 1970s. The prevalence of narcolepsy was established, and a canine model discovered. Following the finding in Japan that almost all patients with narcolepsy carry a specific HLA subtype, HLA-DR2, Hugh Mac Devitt, F. Carl Grumet, and Larry Steinman initiated immunological studies, but results were generally negative. Using the narcoleptic canines, Dr. N

The construction of anosognosia as a clinical 'disorder' resulted from the convergence (in the work of various writers and culminating in Babinski) of a name, a concept, and a clinical phenomenon. During the early stages of this convergence, unawareness of neurological dysfunction was not considered as an independent clinical phenomenon. Started in the work of Anton, the process of separating it as a differentiable clinical state is completed by Babinski who reaffirmed the semiological independence of 'unawareness'. The history of the construction of 'anosognosia' parallels the late 19th centu…

This paper presents a history of the treatment of conjoined twins. The first mention of this malformation comes from the Neolithic period. Conjoined twins were depicted in mythologies of ancient peoples. The present paper focuses on the theories of formation of Siamese twins and attempts at their separation. Moreover, the history of treatment of conjoined twins in Poland is described.

Type IV mucopolysaccharidosis (Morquio A syndrome; MPS IVA; OMIM 253000), is a multisystemic, severe and very disabling disease, also life-threatening; MPS IVA is due to a deficiency of the enzyme N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase (GALNS), a lysosomal enzyme responsible for the degradation of keratan sulfate (KS) and chondroitin-6-sulfate (C6S). The disease is characterized by respiratory, pulmonary manifestations and also causes bone involvement with progressive spondyloepimetaphyseal degradation and mild and late-onset ophthalmologic, hearing and cardiac complications. These manifest

Increased blood cell regeneration in exsanguinated experimental animals treated either with liver or with aqueous liver extracts was reported by Whipple and by Jeney and Jobling, respectively. These findings stimulated Minot and Murphy to provide evidence for the efficacy of liver against anaemia in clinical studies. After oral administration of liver (45-50 g per day) for 45 patients with anaemia perniciosa improvement of the hematological status was demonstrated. Consequently, for proving the therapeutic value of liver therapy Whipple, Minot and Murphy received Nobel price in 1934. The isola

The rich cardiology literature of the past 100 years in which the most important forms of syncope are described - including vasodepressor syncope, postural orthostatic hypotension, and Morgagni-Stokes-Adams syncope - is fascinating. These conditions were of interest to some of our most astute clinicians who were also excellent writers. We thus have available for review the remarkable description of patients with these entities written by clinicians such as Soma Weiss, Sir Thomas Lewis, Laurence Ellis, David Sherf, Milton Shy, and Glenn Drager. In their detailed clinical descriptions we identif

The disease we now know as brucellosis was first discovered in the 1850s in Malta. It came to the attention of British medical officers serving on the island after the Crimean War. It was easy to eliminate the disease in British servicemen, but very difficult to reach Maltese citizens. Over the decades, more and more Maltese were infected asthe control measures introduced were half-hearted and were often not even enforced. The work of Dr Themistocles Zammit showed that infected goats transmitted brucellosis and that banning use of their milk would be effective. Pasteurisation was not introduce

The history of syphilis is complex and has left its mark throughout medicine. The origin of syphilis is an important historical and scientific issue in the history of medicine. The Columbian hypothesis which assumes that syphilis originated in the New World ('America') and that Columbus and his crew imported the disease after his voyages of discovery in 1493 to the Old World ('Europe') is the most accepted theory. Misinterpretations of unethical experiments into the causes of syphilis and gonorrhoea from the 17th century to the early decades of the 19th century led to nosological misconception…

At the end of the 15th century syphilis appeared in Europe as a devastating epidemic. For nearly four centuries mercury was regarded as a remedy of first-rate importance along with guaiac and potassium iodide. In the early 20th century, two new substances were added to syphilis therapeutics, namely arsenobenzol and bismuth. The absence of treponemal serum tests and the erroneous attribution of the positive Wassermann reaction exclusively to Treponema pallidum infection resulted in prolonged and non-proven effective treatments. In 1943 John Mahoney introduced penicillin, revolutionizing the tre

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The field of neuro-otology has advanced substantially over the past 150 years. The function of the vestibular system was presumed to be audiologic prior to the groundbreaking work of Prosper Ménière in the late 1800s. Since that time, scientific discovery has advanced our knowledge of the physiology and the pathophysiology of the vestibular system. This article describes where we have been, where we are now, and where we need to go from here.
RECENT FINDINGS: Some of the important recent advances include: (1) improved imaging of the brain and inner ear, (2) development of n

Dengue is a viral disease usually transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Dengue outbreaks in the Americas reported in medical literature and to the Pan American Health Organization are described. The outbreak history from 1600 to 2010 was categorized into four phases: Introduction of dengue in the Americas (1600-1946); Continental plan for the eradication of the Ae. aegypti (1947-1970) marked by a successful eradication of the mosquito in 18 continental countries by 1962; Ae. aegypti reinfestation (1971-1999) caused by the failure of the mosquito eradication program; Increased dispersion of …
