Use of administrative records to assess pneumococcal conjugate vaccine impact on pediatric meningitis and pneumonia hospitalizations in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Ongoing surveillance is critical to assessing pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) impact over time. However, robust prospective studies are difficult to implement in resource-poor settings. We evaluated retrospective use of routinely collected data to estimate PCV impact in Rwanda. METHODS: We collected data from admission registers at five district hospitals on children age <5yearsadmitted for suspected meningitis and pneumonia during 2002-2012. We obtained clinical and laboratory data on meningitis from sentinel surveillance at the national reference hospital in Kigali. We deve

Risk of subarachnoid haemorrhage in people admitted to hospital with selected immune-mediated diseases: record-linkage studies.

BackgroundSubarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating cause of stroke, occurring in relatively young people. It has been suggested that some immune-mediated diseases may be associated with an increased risk of SAH.MethodsWe analysed a database of linked statistical records of hospital admissions and death certificates for the whole of England (1999-2011). Rate ratios for SAH were determined, comparing immune-mediated disease cohorts with comparison cohorts.ResultsThere were significantly elevated risks of SAH after hospital admission for the following individual immune-mediated diseases: Ad

Hospital admissions for vitamin D related conditions and subsequent immune-mediated disease: record-linkage studies.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that there may be an association between vitamin D deficiency and the risk of developing immune-mediated diseases. METHODS: We analyzed a database of linked statistical records of hospital admissions and death registrations for the whole of England (from 1999 to 2011). Rate ratios for immune-mediated disease were determined, comparing vitamin D deficient cohorts (individuals admitted for vitamin D deficiency or markers of vitamin D deficiency) with comparison cohorts. RESULTS: After hospital admission for either vitamin D deficiency, osteomalacia o

Assessment of ADRs associated with lipid-lowering agents recorded in the Department of Internal Medicine, University Hospital, Jena.

Drug-related illness is an important cause of admission to hospital. Little information is available regarding the frequency of ADRs caused by antilipidemic agents classified as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). Treatment with statins has been associated with the occurrence of myopathy or liver toxicity in case reports. Recent lipid intervention studies have involved the implementation of lipid lowering therapy with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors in cardiovascular risk management. Since January 1997 we have been involved in a study, the aim of which was to improve the spontaneous drug info

[Rheumatic fever from 1960's to 1990's. Case records in 2 hospitals of the Lombardian area].

An epidemiological study of rheumatic fever (RF) has been done. Incidence and prevalence of RF observed in Monza Hospital from 1964 to 1990 and in Como Hospital from 1980 to 1990 both show a progressive reduction. An exception to this trend was observed in 1986 in Monza in 1985 in Como. The percentage of carditis in pediatric age is high (60-70%), often associated with arthritis and chorea. However carditis clinical picture seems nowadays less severe, probably because in the past the diagnosis was delayed. Sice 1980 no death were observed due to RF or related cardiac involvement. Relapses and

Impact of Socioeconomic Deprivation on children's Need for Anesthesia: A Retrospective Analysis of Electronic Health Records From a Tertiary Referral children's Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic status and geography create healthcare inequalities in children. Geographical areas in the United Kingdom are ranked by deprivation, which confers a higher risk for specific diseases that necessitate procedures under anesthesia. AIMS: To examine the relationship between the geographical indices of deprivation and the odds of children presenting for procedures involving anesthesia at a specialist children's referral hospital in Northwest England and Wales, UK. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis linking electronic patient records of patients presenting

Magnitude, Presentation, and Management of Pelvic Organ Prolapse at a Tertiary Referral Hospital in Southwestern Uganda: Retrospective Medical Records Review (2014-2018).

PURPOSE: This study sought to determine the burden, clinical characteristics, and management approaches of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) among women admitted to the gynecology unit at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) in southwestern Uganda. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of medical records for women treated for pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) at the gynecology unit of MRRH between January 2014 and December 2018. The PFDs evaluated included POP, genitourinary fistulas, anosphincter injuries, and other forms of urinary incontinence. For women diagnosed with POP, additional i

Exploring Mortality and Prognostic Factors of Heart Failure with In-Hospital and Emergency Patients by Electronic Medical Records: A Machine Learning Approach.

PURPOSE: As HF progresses into advanced HF, patients experience a poor quality of life, distressing symptoms, intensive care use, social distress, and eventual hospital death. We aimed to investigate the relationship between morality and potential prognostic factors among in-patient and emergency patients with HF. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A case series study: Data are collected from in-hospital and emergency care patients from 2014 to 2021, including their international classification of disease at admission, and laboratory data such as blood count, liver and renal functions, lipid profile, and

Comparative analysis of thrombocytopenia incidence in patients treated with generic vs. brand-name linezolid: a cohort study utilizing hospital electronic medical records.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the hematological safety of generic linezolid, providing data to support its rational and safe use in clinical practice. METHODS: Data were collected from electronic medical records at a tertiary hospital in China between January 2019 and June 2023. We conducted a real-world, retrospective matched cohort study involving hospitalized patients treated with either generic or brand-name linezolid for bacterial infections. Propensity score matching was employed to control for potential risk factors associated with thrombocytopenia. The primary outcome was t

Age- and Sex-Specific Differences in Multimorbidity Patterns and Temporal Trends on Assessing Hospital Discharge Records in Southwest China: Network-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity represents a global health challenge, which requires a more global understanding of multimorbidity patterns and trends. However, the majority of studies completed to date have often relied on self-reported conditions, and a simultaneous assessment of the entire spectrum of chronic disease co-occurrence, especially in developing regions, has not yet been performed. OBJECTIVE: We attempted to provide a multidimensional approach to understand the full spectrum of chronic disease co-occurrence among general inpatients in southwest China, in order to investigate multimor

Redistribution of heart failure deaths using two methods: linkage of hospital records with death certificate data and multiple causes of death data.

Heart failure is considered a garbage code when assigned as the underlying cause of death. Reassigning garbage codes to plausible causes reduces bias and increases comparability of mortality data. Two redistribution methods were applied to Brazilian data, from 2008 to 2012, for decedents aged 55 years and older. In the multiple causes of death method, heart failure deaths were redistributed based on the proportion of underlying causes found in matched deaths that had heart failure listed as an intermediate cause. In the hospitalization data method, heart failure deaths were redistributed based

Risk of cardiovascular disease in Chinese patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A cross-sectional study based on hospital medical records in 10 years.

OBJECTIVE: Though the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been established in Western population, little is known about the risk in Chinese people with RA. Our objective was to estimate the risk of CVD in Chinese people with RA using hospital medical records data. METHODS: The inpatients medical record database 2005-2015 of Sichuan provincial people's hospital was examined. All individuals with a primary diagnosis of RA were included as cases, and those of osteoarthritis (OA) were included as controls, which consisted of the unmatched dataset. Then, RA cases
