BACKGROUND: Lake Tanganyika is the world's second deepest lake. Its diverse cichlid assemblage offers a unique opportunity for studying a deep-water host-parasite model in freshwater. Low host specificity and a broad host range including representatives of the Bathybatini tribe in the only monogenean parasite described from this habitat, Cichlidogyrus casuarinus Pariselle, Muterezi Bukinga & Vanhove, 2015 suggest a link between lower specificity and lower host density. Conversely, high host specificity and species richness are reported for monogeneans of the lake's littoral cichlids. We furthe…

BACKGROUND: Rapid and accurate differentiation of common vaginitis remains challenging in routine clinical practice. Dual-fluorescence assay, which simultaneously visualizes microorganisms and host cells under blue light excitation, may serve as an adjunctive tool to conventional microscopy. This study explored the imaging characteristics of dual-fluorescence staining in cultured vaginal epithelial cells and standard reference microbial strains, and further evaluated its diagnostic performance in a clinical population of 758 women undergoing vaginal secretion testing.
RESULTS: (1) Under 450-5

The parasite island syndrome denotes shifts in parasite life histories on islands, which affect parasite diversity, prevalence and specificity. However, current evidence of parasite island syndromes mainly stems from oceanic islands, while sky islands (i.e. mountains isolated by surrounding low-elevation habitats) have received limited attention. To explore the parasite syndrome in Afrotropical sky islands, we examined haemosporidian blood parasites and their bird hosts in two Afromontane regions in Cameroon. Analysing more than 1300 bird blood samples from the Bamenda Highlands and Mount Came

Many pandemics have been attributed to the ability of some RNA viruses to change their host range to include humans. Here, we review the mechanisms of disease emergence that are related to the host-range specificity of selected mosquito-borne alphaviruses and flaviviruses. We discuss viruses of medical importance, including Venezuelan equine and Japanese encephalitis viruses, dengue viruses and West Nile viruses.

BACKGROUND: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a major foodborne pathogen that contaminates aquatic products and causes great economic losses to aquaculture. Because of the emergence of multidrug-resistant V. parahaemolyticus strains, bacteriophages are considered promising agents for their biocontrol as an alternative or supplement to antibiotics. In this study, a lytic vibriophage, vB_VpaM_R16F (R16F), infecting V. parahaemolyticus 1.1997T was isolated, characterized and evaluated for its biocontrol potential.
METHODS: A vibriophage R16F was isolated from sewage from a seafood market with the doubl

Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses considered to be natural bacterial predators and widely detected in aquatic environments. Sewage samples are an important source of phage isolation since high density and diversity of bacterial cells are present, due to human, animal and household fluids. This study aims to investigate and characterise phages against an extremely drug-resistant (XDR) lineage, Klebsiella pneumoniae ST16, using sewage samples from different parts of the World. Sewage samples from Brazil, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and the United Kingdom were collected and used to inves

Eutarsopolipus (Acari: Podapolipidae) is a large genus of mites parasitic in the subelytral space of carabid beetles. Herein, I explore the species radiations of Eutarsopolipus on the pterostichine genera Castelnaudia and Notonomus found in the rainforests of eastern Australia. Castelnaudia has an extraordinary radiation of podapolipid mite species, with most beetle species carrying multiple species of mites unique to each host. In contrast, each Notonomus species had just one species of Eutarsopolipus (with the exception of a single male mite of another species), and in four of the five host

Salmonella is an animal and zoonotic pathogen of global importance. Depending on pathogen and host factors, infections can be asymptomatic or involve acute gastroenteritis or invasive disease. Genomic signatures associated with host-range, tissue tropism or differential virulence of Salmonella enterica serovars, and their variants, have emerged. In turn, it is becoming feasible to predict invasive potential, host-adaptation and zoonotic risk of Salmonella from sequence data to improve outbreak investigation, risk assessment and control strategies. Functional annotation of Salmonella genomes ha

Ongoing debate over the relationship between biodiversity and disease risk underscores the need to develop a more mechanistic understanding of how changes in host community composition influence parasite transmission, particularly in complex communities with multiple hosts. A key challenge involves determining how motile parasites select among potential hosts and the degree to which this process shifts with community composition. Focusing on interactions between larval amphibians and the pathogenic trematode Ribeiroia ondatrae, we designed a novel, large-volume set of choice chambers to assess

Emerging infectious diseases often result from pathogens jumping to novel hosts. Identifying possibilities and constraints on host transfer is therefore an important facet of research in disease ecology. Host transfers can be studied for the bacterium Mycoplasma gallisepticum, predominantly a pathogen of poultry until its 1994 appearance and subsequent epidemic spread in a wild songbird, the house finch Haemorhous mexicanus and some other wild birds. We screened a broad range of potential host species for evidence of infection by M. gallisepticum in order to answer 3 questions: (1) is there a

While parasites frequently cross the host species barrier and increase their host range, the mechanisms underlying successful novel cross-species transmission remain poorly understood. Host range expansion of complex life-cycle parasites is especially challenging to assess because they use different host species for development and reproduction. Addressing this knowledge gap, we use a large, published dataset on fish-helminth interactions, which includes introduced, non-native fish species, providing an opportunity to examine parasite infection of novel species in the context of a parasite's k

Myxozoans are economically important cnidarian endoparasites. Members of this group have been traditionally characterized by a morphology-based taxonomic system. Because myxozoans possess few morphological characters, these data are routinely accompanied by biological traits (host/organ/tissue specificity) and molecular data when describing or identifying myxozoan species. In the present study, a species of Myxobolus was collected from the fins of yellow catfish Tachysurus fulvidraco Richardson, 1846, which was consistent in spore morphology and host/organ specificity with Chinese records of M

Chayote (Sechium edule) is an important cucurbit crop grown in tropical and subtropical climates for its edible fruits, shoots, and roots. Its production faces growing threats from various viral pathogens, including Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus, Squash leaf curl Philippines virus, Zucchini yellow mosaic virus, and Tomato spotted wilt virus which are in emerging trend. The viruses spread by vectors such as whiteflies, aphids, and thrips are predominant in agroecosystems where chayote is grown. Viral infection can cause symptoms such as mosaic patterns, leaf curling, stunting, and necrosis,

Phytomyxea (SAR: Rhizaria: Endomyxa) is a group of obligate biotrophic parasitic protists comprised of two orders: Plasmodiophorida, found in terrestrial or freshwater environments, and Phagomyxida, found in marine environments. While Plasmodiophorida has been extensively studied due to its economic importance as plant pathogens, Phagomyxida remains poorly investigated despite its ecological significance in marine ecosystems. During intensive sampling along the Korean coast from April to December 2023, novel parasitoids infecting dinoflagellates were discovered in seawater collected at 10 coas

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a global health threat and bacteriophages are a potential solution in combating pandrug-resistant K. pneumoniae infections. Two lytic phages, LASTA and SJM3, active against several pandrug-resistant, nosocomial strains of K. pneumoniae were isolated and characterized. Their host range is narrow and latent period is particularly long; however, their lysogenic nature was refuted using both bioinformatic and experimental approaches. Genome sequence analysis clustered them with only two other phages into the new genus Lastavirus. Genomes of LASTA and SJM3 differ in only 13
