Decommodifying and Humanizing Health Care: Revisiting Pellegrino's Ethical Imperative.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points A quarter of a century since bioethicist Edmund Pellegrino warned about the commodification of health and health care, the problem has significantly worsened. Commodification of health and health care objectifies and dehumanizes people and undermines core concepts of holistic person-centered health, much less core human rights, including fulfillment of human potential and comprehensive health care. Multilevel sustained strategies and multisector coalitions are required to decommodify and humanize health and health care based on mental models, national and state polici…

The intrinsic, instrumental, and symbolic values of sustaining childhood vaccination in conflict settings.

The World Health Organization's Decision Framework for Vaccination in Acute Humanitarian Emergencies remains the principal global guide for vaccination prioritization and decision-making in crisis settings. However, it gives insufficient attention to sustaining vaccination as a matter of justice, as a means of upholding established human rights norms and the values that vaccines provide in these contexts. We argue that, if children living in conflict settings are to enjoy the same fundamental rights to life and health as children elsewhere, vaccination must be recognized as more than an emerge…

Girls and women speak out from Afghan moral prisons: Tackling extremism and violence against women in a conflict environment.

It shows difficulties some health professionals' encounter in documenting, reporting and treating cases of violence against women and girls. The research concludes that a survivor-centered approach, and secular fr …

The vulnerabilities of lives: Zika, women and children in Alagoas State, Brazil.

Until 2015, Zika was mostly unknown in Brazil and in the world. Since then, the Zika virus has been found to be vertically transmitted and to cause congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). This study aims to describe and analyze the vulnerabilities of the women and children most affected by the Zika epidemic in Brazil. Alagoas has the lowest Human Development Index in Brazil and one of the highest rates of adolescent pregnancy. Between December 2016 and March 2017, interviews were conducted with 54 women with children affected by Zika. The interviews had two components: a narrative-oriented conversatio

Contemporary transgender health experience and health situation in prisons: A scoping review of extant published literature (2000-2019).

Background: Many jurisdictions globally have no specific prison policy to guide prison management and prison staff in relation to the special needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) prisoners despite the United Nations for the Treatment of Prisoners Standard Minimum Rules and the updated 2017 Yogyakarta Principles on the Application of International Human Rights Law in relation to Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. Within LGBT prison groups, transgender people represent a key special population with distinct needs and rights, with incarceration rates greater than that of th…

Is breast cancer survival correlated with indicators of the right to health? An interdisciplinary study in 58 countries.

BACKGROUND: Women with breast cancer have different chances of surviving their disease, depending on where they live. When breast cancer is diagnosed and treated early, the chances of longer-term survival improve. Inequalities in survival are deemed unfair, because high survival for breast cancer can be achieved. We enquired whether adoption of a human rights-based approach to breast cancer care and management is correlated with breast cancer survival. METHOD: We reviewed the law literature on key concepts of the human right to health and performed a scoping review of the public health litera…

How Ancestral Trauma Informs Patients' Health Decision Making.

This article considers intergenerational trauma by drawing on the experience of a 37-year-old Black woman whose great-grandfather died as a result of involuntary involvement in the US Public Health Service Syphilis Study at Tuskegee. Although she never met her great-grandfather, the abuse, exploitation, and human rights violations he suffered at the hands of the US government profoundly influenced her health experiences. This article contextualizes her experiences in light of past medical abuse and microethics.

Spatial distribution of intimate partner violence in Jordan: results from the 2023 Population and Family Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Public health burden and human rights violations converge in intimate partner violence (IPV), reflecting sociocultural inequalities that deny women their basic right to safety. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from the 2023 Jordan Population and Family Health Survey (JPFHS) was conducted to analyze the geographic distribution of IPV in Jordan. RESULTS: IPV proportions varied from 0 to 100% at the cluster/enumeration area (EA) level. Socio-ethical and legal issues regarding surrogacy in Ghana: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Surrogacy has recently emerged as a crucial fertility treatment solution due to the development of in-vitro fertilization (IVF). There are however a number of socio-ethical and legal issues, including parental rights, children's basic human rights, and abuse of women, most notably surrogate exploitation. In Ghana, these socio-ethical issues have not been well studied. This study aimed to explore the socio-ethical and legal issues regarding surrogacy in Ghana. Environmentally driven migration in EU discourse: norms, policies and realities.

For decades, the European Union (EU) has been addressing issues related to climate change and ecological degradation as a self-proclaimed pro-environmental and human rights-oriented actor. Correspondingly, the topic of the so-called environmentally driven migration entered the EU discourse at the dawn of the new millennium. Considering the EU's interest in the human rights and environmental/climate issue areas, I argue it is important to ask what the Union's approach to this matter has been. Thus, this article assesses the European Union discourse related to the topic of environmental migratio…

Where do incarcerated trans women prefer to be housed and why? Adding nuanced understandings to a complex debate through the voices of formerly incarcerated trans women in Australia and the United States.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated trans women experience significant victimization, mistreatment, barriers to gender-affirming care, and human rights violations, conferring high risk for trauma, psychological distress, self-harm, and suicide. Across the globe, most carceral settings are segregated by sex assigned at birth and governed by housing policies that restrict gender expression-elevating 'safety and security' above the housing preferences of incarcerated people. AIM/METHODS: Drawing upon the lived experiences of 24 formerly incarcerated trans women in Australia and the United States and employ…
