PROPOSE: Acanthamoebaspp. are widespread free-living protists found in various natural and man-made habitats. At times, they can become parasitic, leading to conditions such as Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK), granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE), and systemic infections in humans and animals. In veterinary medicine, infections caused by Acanthamoeba spp. are frequently underdiagnosed, necessitating a high degree of clinical vigilance and laboratory technical skill for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: This review aimed to provide an overview of documented natural infections in anima

Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by numerous fungi that infect crops during pre- and post-harvest stages. Aflatoxins, ochratoxins, fumonisins, zearalenone, and trichothecenes are of greatest concern due to their widespread occurrence and high toxicity. Consumption of mycotoxin-contaminated food and feed poses serious public health risks, as these compounds are linked to carcinogenic, neurotoxic, nephrotoxic, hepatotoxic, and immunotoxic effects. The frequent co-occurrence of multiple mycotoxins further amplifies health risks through additive or synergistic interactions and c

The rotavirus enterotoxin NSP4 (nonstructural protein 4), plays a pivotal role in viral morphogenesis as well as pathogenesis. In this study, the NSP4 gene of rotavirus group A (RVA) isolates of bovine origin isolated in several states of India from 2008 to 2011 were characterized. The complete open reading frame of 23 RVA strains were sequenced and analyzed phylogenetically. Genotype E1 was detected for the first time in bovines from India, in addition to the more common bovine genotype E2. Sequence similarity analysis of the E1 sequences showed a close genetic relatedness to human strains. S

The Superior Colliculus (SC) is a multimodal integration midbrain structure receiving input from various sensory systems (visual, auditory, and somatosensory) and using this information to guide rapid, reflexive responses. Research using invasive animal model techniques has extensively characterized the SC connectional fingerprint and subcomponent differentiation. However, the extent to which these findings can be generalized to humans remains largely unknown. Here, we developed a fully data-driven approach to examine the wiring diagram of each voxel in the human SC in a cohort of 200 particip

INTRODUCTION: Depressive symptoms (DS) in humans are associated with decreased resting state vagal activity, but sex seems to moderate this association. Recently, in human females DS have been associated with greater or similar cardiac vagal activity compared to men in both, clinical and non-clinical samples. A previously validated animal model of behavioral depression was used in the present study to investigate the association of DS and cardiac vagal activity in non-human primates.
METHODS: The root mean square of successive differences between adjacent heart beats (RMSSD) was used as an in

BACKGROUND: A large number of studies have assessed risk factors for infection with soil-transmitted helminths (STH), but few have investigated the interactions between the different parasites or compared these between host species across hosts. Here, we assessed the associations between Ascaris, Trichuris, hookworm, strongyle and Toxocara infections in the Philippines in human and animal hosts.
METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from humans and animals (dogs, cats and pigs) in 252 households from four villages in southern Philippines and intestinal helminth infections were assessed by mi

Given the dual life cycle of arboviruses in insect and animal hosts and the importance of serum factors as a first line antiviral defense, we have examined the outcome of interactions between the arbovirus La Crosse Virus (LACV) and human serum. To mimic the life cycle between species, we used LACV derived from insect (I-LACV) and human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells. Incubation of I-LACV with normal human serum did not result in neutralization, but instead stabilized I-LACV virions and enhanced the amount of infectious virus. Enhanced infectivity was also seen with heat-inactivated serum devoid o

UNLABELLED: Use of antimicrobials in industrial food animal production is associated with the presence of multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus among animals and humans. The livestock-associated (LA) methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) clonal complex 9 (CC9) is associated with animals and related workers in Asia. This study aimed to explore the genotypic and phenotypic markers of LA-MRSA CC9 in humans. We conducted a cross-sectional study of livestock workers and controls in Guangdong, China. The study participants responded to a questionnaire and provided a nasal swab for S. aureus ana

Mycotoxins are frequent food contaminants posing health risk to humans and animals. Since these interactions have been barely studied yet, we examined the potential complex formation of mycotoxins with human α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and with bovine milk proteins (including casein (CSN), β-lactoglobulin (LG), and α-lactalbumin (LA)) based on fluorescence spectroscopic and ultracentrifugation techniques. Only weak interactions (logK = 2.7 to 3.5) of certain mycotoxins were observed with CSN, LG, and/or LA. Ultracentrifugation experiments demonstrated that aflatoxin M1, zearalenone, and α-zeara

Modern society adopts a highly ambiguous attitude towards foods of animal origin in human nutrition. Animal protein is of great biological value. However, the wealthy part of the world already consumes more than sufficient protein, which renders this value superfluous. On the other hand, a rich diet including a large share of animal products is suspect from the point of view of cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis and nephrolithiasis. The role of fat, protein, cholesterol, salt, calcium and a number of minor components is discussed. It is concluded that as far as fats are concerned, re

With an estimated global incidence of nearly one million cases and nearly 60,000 associated deaths annually, leptospirosis is recognized as one of the most widespread zoonotic diseases worldwide. In Latin America, leptospirosis remains endemic and neglected, with recurrent outbreaks linked to climatic variability, flooding, and close human-animal-environment interactions. In this region, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador account for nearly 80% of leptospirosis reported cases. Despite advances in molecular diagnostics and species-level identification, serogroups remain central to leptospirosi

Animals play important roles in dispersing seeds, nutrients, and microbes across Earth's surface. These transport functions connect ecosystems and shape fundamental dynamics, including community composition, productivity, and carbon storage. Yet humans have substantially altered resource availability, wildlife assemblages, and movement patterns, leading to some undesirable outcomes, including the spread of nonnative species, pollutants, and zoonotic pathogens. Although animals disperse multiple natural and anthropogenic objects simultaneously, people tend to champion or criticize animal disper

Most of the new emerging and re-emerging zoonotic virus outbreaks in recent years stem from close interaction with dead or alive infected animals. Since late 2019, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread into 221 countries and territories resulting in close to 300 million known infections and 5.4 million deaths in addition to a huge impact on both public health and the world economy. This paper reviews the COVID-19 prevalence in animals, raise concerns about animal welfare and discusses the role of environment in the transmission of COVID-19. Attention is drawn to the One Health con

BACKGROUND: In humans and macaques, a promoter polymorphism that decreases transcription of the serotonin transporter gene is associated with anxiety. Serotonin transporter gene disruption in rodents produces anxious animals with exaggerated limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) responses to stress. We wanted to determine whether serotonin transporter gene promoter variation (rh-5HTTLPR) and rearing condition would interact to influence endocrine responses to stress in infant rhesus macaques.
METHODS: Animals were reared with their mothers (MR, n = 141) or in peer-only groups (PR, n =

Studies involving genetic engineering on animal models and mathematical analysis of cardiovascular signals on humans are shedding new light on the interactions between the arterial baroreceptor reflex (baroreflex) and arousal. Baroreceptor stimulation, if very mild or performed under anaesthesia, may inhibit cortical arousal. However, substantial increases or decreases in baroreflex activation cause arousal in animal models and human subjects in physiological conditions. On the other hand, cardiovascular changes during autonomic arousals and between the states of wakefulness and sleep involve

Osteoarthritis belongs to the most common joint diseases in humans and animals and shows increased incidence in older patients. The bioactivities of collagen hydrolysates, sulfated glucosamine and a special fatty acid enriched dog-food were tested in a dog patient study of 52 dogs as potential therapeutic treatment options in early osteoarthritis. Biophysical, biochemical, cell biological and molecular modeling methods support that these well-defined substances may act as effective nutraceuticals. Importantly, the applied collagen hydrolysates as well as sulfated glucosamine residues from mari

Physical activity (PA) plays a crucial role in promoting emotional well-being, quality of life, and social interaction. Thyroid dysfunction can significantly affect the ability to engage in PA. This review aims to explore the relationship between thyroid disorders and PA. A comprehensive review of the international literature was conducted, including 24 scientific studies that investigated the effects of thyroid dysfunction on exercise in both human and animal models, with and without thyroidectomy. The findings indicate that thyroid disorders are associated with a variety of conditions, inclu

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) increases the risk for cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and dementia. The underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive, which hampers the development of treatment or/and effective prevention strategies. Recent studies suggest that dyshomeostasis of amylin, a satiety hormone that forms pancreatic amyloid in patients with T2D, promotes accumulation of amylin in cerebral small blood vessels and interaction with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Overexpression of human amylin in rodents (rodent amylin does not form amyloid) leads to late-life onset T2D and neurologic deficit

Rikkunshito is a kampo herbal medicine which is widely used in Japan for the treatment of the upper gastrointestinal symptoms of patients with functional dyspepsia (FD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), dyspeptic symptoms of postgastrointestinal surgery patients, and chemotherapy-induced dyspepsia in cancer patients. Recently, very unique characteristics of rikkunshito have been unveiled; oral administration of rikkunshito potentiates orexigenic action of ghrelin through several different mechanisms. In addition, several lines of evidence obtained from both animal and human studies indi
