JUSTIFICATION AND OBJECTIVES: Patients affected by gynecological or gastrointestinal tract neoplasms that evolve to peritoneal carcinomatosis experience a significant drop in their quality of life, high morbidity and short survival times with currently available chemotherapeutic schemes. The surgical treatment based on cytoreduction and the employment of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in the intra-operative period is a true challenge to anesthesiologist.
CASE REPORT: A 67 years old patient diagnosed with mucinous adenocarcinoma of the Appendix associated with mucinous carcinomatosi…

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal metastases from ovarian cancer have been shown to have a role in recurrent ovarian cancer, but are still not considered standard therapy.
METHODS: From March 2005 to July 2013, 41 patients who underwent 44 CRS and HIPEC for peritoneal metastases in recurrent ovarian cancer were included in this study. Details were obtained from a prospectively maintained database. Our aim was to report our 5-year overall and disease-free survivals, as well as prognostic factors for survival.
RESULTS: …

BACKGROUND: Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a rare surgical complication that can occur after intraperitoneal treatment. It is also a serious and potentially fatal complication of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. The present report describes a case of surgically treated EPS that probably occurred as a complication of hyperthermic intraperitonal chemotherapy (HIPEC).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old man required sigmoidectomy for serosal invasive advanced sigmoid colon cancer. HIPEC with oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil and mitomycin C were given as adjuvant therapy. Subsequen

AIM: Cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS+HIPEC) has been proposed as treatment for advanced epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC). No consensus exists on when to administer CRS+HIPEC during the natural history of the disease, namely, as upfront therapy, at first recurrence, or at second or subsequent recurrence.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed a series of patients with advanced EOC collected prospectively in an institution with a peritoneal malignant disease treatment program. Patients were treated with CRS+HIPEC upfront, at first recurrence, and …

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic laparoscopy (DL) is increasingly used in the preoperative evaluation of patients with peritoneal metastasis (PM) who are considered for cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC). Cross-sectional imaging has limited accuracy for assessing small-bowel and mesenteric disease, which are key determinants of resectability. DL may improve patient selection and reduce the frequency of nontherapeutic laparotomy.
AIM: We aimed to summarize current evidence on the feasibility, diagnostic performance, and clinical impact of DL in pa…

BACKGROUND: The role of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in epithelial ovarian cancer remains debated, with inconsistent results across clinical settings. This meta-analysis used reconstructed time-to-event data from randomized trials to provide a time-sensitive evaluation of HIPEC's therapeutic impact.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov (through June 2025) identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with or without HIPEC in newly diagnosed or recurrent ovarian cancer. Time-t…

OBJECTIVE: Enlarged cardiophrenic lymph nodes (CPLN) are common in patients with advanced ovarian cancer and may indicate stage IV disease. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) improves survival in patients with stage III disease who are eligible for interval cytoreductive surgery (CRS). This OVHIPEC-1 side study investigates the prognostic value of enlarged CPLN and their predictive value for HIPEC benefit.
METHODS: We performed a post-hoc analysis of the OVHIPEC-1 trial, which randomized stage III ovarian cancer patients to interval CRS with or without HIPEC. CPLN presence with…

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a potentially curative treatment for peritoneal metastases from colorectal cancer (CRC) or pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). Because of the considerable morbidity of this treatment, optimal patient selection is key. This study aimed to assess the impact of low skeletal muscle mass (SMM) on outcomes after CRS-HIPEC.
METHODS: Patients who underwent CRS-HIPEC between 2014 and 2020 at a tertiary center were included. SMM was measured on computed tomography by means of the L3 muscle index. Postoperative c…
