Leukonychia refers to a white discoloration of the nails. Although several conditions may cause white nails, a rare, isolated, congenital form of the disease is hypothesized to stem from disordered keratinization of the nail plate. Herein, we report a case of a 41-year-old woman with congenital leukonychia and review prior cases.

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a rare inherited multisystem condition characterized by oculocutaneous albinism, bleeding diathesis, and subtype-specific systemic complications, including pulmonary fibrosis and granulomatous colitis. Early diagnosis is essential because pulmonary involvement, particularly in HPS type 4, may be life-threatening. We report a boy who was first referred for ophthalmologic evaluation at seven weeks of age due to generalized hypopigmentation and congenital nystagmus. Examination revealed marked iris translucency, diffuse fundus hypopigmentation with prominent cho…

BACKGROUND: Keloids are benign fibro-proliferative growths occurring after skin injury or spontaneously. Intralesional triamcinolone acetoni … ll VSS was detected in patients of group A. A significantly higher incidence of post-TA atrophy and hypopigmentation was observed in group B.
CONCLUSION: Combining intralesional PRP with TA could yield cosmetically better outcomes in keloid treatment with lower incidence of TA-induced side effects especially atrophy and hypopigmentation.

INTRODUCTION: Griscelli syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal-recessive genetic disease characterized by hypopigmentation of skin and hair. We report a case of GS type 3 with late diagnosis.
OBSERVATION: A 31-year-old female patient had presented depigmentation of the hair and eyebrows as well as diffuse skin hypopigmentation during childhood. Microscopic analysis of a hair shaft revealed irregularly distributed clumps of melanin. DNA sequencing showed a homozygous C103T (R35W) transition in exon 1 of MLPH, confirming Griscelli syndrome type 3.
DISCUSSION: Three clinical phenotypes of GS have be…

BACKGROUND: Hypopigmentation in hypopigmented mycosis fungoides (MF) is thought to result from the action of CD8+ cells on melanocytes. Here, we investigated the immunophenotype and melanocytic markers in hypopigmented MF lesions.
METHODS: Specimens of hypopigmented lesions and normal skin from 18 patients with hypopigmented MF and specimens of non-hypopigmented lesions from 8 patients with classic/conventional MF were subjected to neoplastic immunophenotyping and melanocyte immunostaining with Melan-A, tyrosinase, stem cell factor receptor (CD117) and microphthalmia-associated transcription …

Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) is a set of genetically heterogeneous diseases caused by mutations in one of nine known HPS genes. HPS patients display oculocutaneous hypopigmentation and bleeding diathesis and, depending on the disease subtype, pulmonary fibrosis, congenital nystagmus, reduced visual acuity, and platelet aggregation deficiency. Mouse models for all known HPS subtypes have contributed greatly to our understanding of the disease, but many of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying HPS remain unknown. Here, we characterize ocular defects in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) m…

BACKGROUND: Macromastia necessitating breast reduction with free nipple grafts often results in a breast shape that lacks upper pole project … and complications including hematoma, seroma, infection, fat necrosis, wound breakdown, and nipple hypopigmentation were studied.
RESULTS: A total of six patients, with an average follow-up period of 22 months, underwent breast reductions with free nipple grafts and simultaneous use of the Graf/Biggs flap. The average reduction amount was 2,583 g per side. There …

BACKGROUND: AZD3293 (also known as LY3314814) is a novel, potent, non-selective BACE1/BACE2 inhibitor currently in Phase 3 clinical development for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of these studies was to characterize the effects, putative mechanism, and reversibility of hypopigmentation following treatment with AZD3293 in pigmented Long-Evans rats, Beagle dogs, human cell cultures, and humans.
DESIGN: Nonclinical studies were conducted in Long-Evans pigmented rats, and both young and older Beagle dogs using a variety of oral dose levels of AZD3293 or AZD3839 (BA…

BACKGROUND: Based on the dermoscopic classification of acquired melanocytic naevi, six different dermoscopic types can be distinguished by morphology (globular, globular-reticular, globular-homogeneous, reticular, reticular-homogeneous, homogeneous) and by pigment distribution (uniform, central hyperpigmentation, central hypopigmentation, peripheral hyperpigmentation, peripheral hypopigmentation, multifocal hyper/hypopigmentation). It has been suggested that most individuals harbour one predominant dermoscopic type among their naevi.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether the age of the patient infl…

Familial progressive hyper- and hypopigmentation (FPHH) is characterized by diffuse hyperpigmentation with variable intensity. Cafe'-au-lait macules and larger hypopigmented ash-leaf macules are also present. Herein, we reported a variant case of FPHH. The patient was a two-year-old Chinese girl showing diffuse hyper- and hypopigmented lesions, longitudinal melanonychia in both thumbs, and infantile seizures, without any lentigines.

Skin disorders connected with pigmentation disturbances are most frequent dermatological problems. Different mechanisms are involved in these changes, mainly those which regulate melanocyte function. In this work we focused on molecular basis of pigmentation disorders in dermatological diseases that present clinically with hyperpigmentation (lentigo senilis, Riehl melanosis, seborrhoic keratosis, fibroma, café-au-lait patches melasma, atopic dermatitis) or hypopigmentation (vitiligo, albinism).

Rejuvenation of the aging hand has gained recent popularity. I report on 3 cases with complications related to the use of Artecoll (a permanent filler composed of polymethylmethacrylate) in soft tissue augmentation of the hand. All 3 patients had late-onset granuloma reactions, and the acute attacks were successfully treated with local injections of triamcinolone. However, recurrent reactions and hypopigmentation at the injection sites were noted.
