Localizing value of epileptic visual auras.

It is difficult to differentiate between seizures of occipital or temporal lobe origin in patients with focal epileptic seizures associated … tal EEG recordings and/or seizure freedom after focal resective surgery. Elementary hallucinations, illusions and visual loss were reported not only by all patients with occipital lobe epilepsy, but also by patients with occipitotemporal and anteromedial temporal seizure onset. Complex hallucinations never occurred in occipital lobe seizures but were presen …

Multiple sclerosis and Capgras' syndrome.

Psychotic disorders in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), although reported in the literature, are quite rare. The maniac psychosis is increased in MS patients, especially after steroid use, but a pure paranoid (delusional) state is very uncommon. We report a case of a patient with MS complicated by Capgras' syndrome. This disorder, characterized by misidentification and also known as "illusion of double", was first described by the French psychiatrist Joseph Capgras in 1923. Our patient was a 36-year-old female, with a negative psychiatric history; the diagnosis of MS dated back to the ag

[Optical hallucinations in the aged with diseases of the eye].

Two cases of Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) showing an unusual history are reported. In a 67-year-old man visual hallucinations developed 38 years after bilateral optic nerve damage due to methyl alcohol poisoning. A 78-year-old woman suffering from bilateral advanced cataract experienced visual hallucinations which ceased after improvement of vision resulting from cataract extraction. Sensory deprivation and--possibly--central neurophysiological disturbance are to be regarded as important pathogenetic factors. Signs of cerebral dysfunction which could be relevant to the pathogenesis of CBS wer

A MRI study of fusiform gyrus in schizotypal personality disorder.

The fusiform gyrus is important for face and object recognition, is abnormal in schizophrenia, but has not been studied in schizotypal personality disorder (SPD). Thin-slice MR images showed no differences, either in right, left or total fusiform gyri volumes, between subjects with SPD (N=21) and normal controls (N=19). However, there was a correlation between severity of illusions and magical thinking suffered by the SPD subjects and smaller right fusiform gyrus volumes. This suggests that future studies may be useful in determining the functional competence of this gyrus in SPD.

[Angel trumpets: case report of drug-induced psychosis caused by Brugmansia insigniis].

A case of a psychosis induced by ingestion of blossoms of the solanum Brugmansia insigniis is presented. This plant is used by young persons as a hallucinogenic drug. The psychopathology of this kind of intoxication has not been documented in the literature up to now. It is characterized by anticholinergic effects (e.g. mydriasis), disturbances of orientation, incoherent thoughts, flight of ideas, tangential thinking illusions, auditory hallucinations (e.g. verbal hallucinations), visual hallucinations and affective lability. In addition to hyoscine (scopolamine) and atropine, hallucinogenic e…

Diazepam addiction: a case report.

A case of addiction to Diazepam is reported. Severe withdrawal symptoms such as tremulousness, irritability, increased psychomotor activity, generalized muscle cramps, photophobia, retro-orbital pains and insomnia are described. Visual hallucinations, illusions, and paranoid features are also present in this case. Detoxification and management were accomplished by gradual withdrawal and the addition of another tranquilizer, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant. The author reviews other such reports of abuse and addiction in the literature which call for wide recognition of the addictive properti…

Phantom perception as a Bayesian inference problem: a pilot study.

Tinnitus is the perception of a continuous sound in the absence of an external source. Although the role of the auditory system is well investigated, there is a gap in how multisensory signals are integrated to produce a single percept in tinnitus. Here, we train participants to learn a new sensory environment by associating a cue with a target signal that varies in perceptual threshold. In the test phase, we present only the cue to see whether the person perceives an illusion of the target signal. We perform two separate experiments to observe the behavioral and electrophysiological responses

Video mirror feedback induces more extensive brain activation compared to the mirror box: an fNIRS study in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Mirror therapy (MT) has been shown to be effective for motor recovery of the upper limb after a stroke. The cerebral mechanisms of mirror therapy involve the precuneus, premotor cortex and primary motor cortex. Activation of the precuneus could be a marker of this effectiveness. MT has some limitations and video therapy (VT) tools are being developed to optimise MT. While the clinical superiority of these new tools remains to be demonstrated, comparing the cerebral mechanisms of these different modalities will provide a better understanding of the related neuroplasticity mechanisms

Audio-visual speech processing in age-related hearing loss: Stronger integration and increased frontal lobe recruitment.

Hearing loss is associated with difficulties in understanding speech, especially under adverse listening conditions. In these situations, seeing the speaker improves speech intelligibility in hearing-impaired participants. On the neuronal level, previous research has shown cross-modal plastic reorganization in the auditory cortex following hearing loss leading to altered processing of auditory, visual and audio-visual information. However, how reduced auditory input effects audio-visual speech perception in hearing-impaired subjects is largely unknown. We here investigated the impact of mild t

Context-aware causal reasoning for explanatory visual question answering.

Explanatory Visual Question Answering (EVQA) is a multimodal reasoning task that answers visually relevant natural language questions and generates user-friendly multimodal explanations. Although current EVQA methods can generate grammatically sound and vocabulary appropriate explanations, they still face the challenge of explanatory illusion (i.e., wrong explanations arrive at correct answers). To address this issue, we propose a novel Context-Aware Causal Reasoning (CACR) algorithm. Specifically, we first leverage a Multimodal Large Language Model and design prompting strategies to generate

The Dimensional Structure of the Gambling Attitudes and Beliefs Survey: Challenging the Assumption of the Unidimensionality of Gambling-Specific Cognitive Distortions.

The aim of the present study was to examine the dimensional structure of the Gambling Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (GABS). The GABS was administered to a sample of 415 individuals with self-reported problem or pathological gambling who were taking part in two different treatment studies preregistered with the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS00013888) and ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03372226). Exploratory factor analyses revealed a three-factor structure. We labeled the factors sensation seeking/illusion of control, luck/gambler's fallacy, and attitude/emotions. Subsequent confirmatory factor a

Association of Near-Miss with Two Erroneous Gambling Cognitions and Betting Intention: Evidence from Nigerian Adolescents.

Evidences show increase of positive attitudes of Nigerian adolescents towards gambling in the past decade. Nigerian adolescents have been shown to spend significant part of their academic time and resources on Soccer bets. This behaviour could act as a predisposing factor for poor academic performances and problem gambling at adulthood. The present study drew from the cognitive distortion model to examine the mediational role of near-miss in the erroneous cognition-betting intention association through a survey study design. Male adolescents (N = 237; Mean age = 17.37 years; SD = 4.13) of publ

Autistic barriers in the psychoanalysis of borderline adults.

The authors discuss Frances Tustin's work on childhood autism in order to clarify the nature and protective function of autistic barriers in adult patients who present challenging resistances in treatment. Tustin's thesis is that childhood autism constitutes a massive formation of avoidance reactions that develop in infancy to ward off traumatic awareness of bodily separateness. She describes two forms of childhood pathology that may develop: the encapsulated child who defends against all 'not me' experience by means of self-generated bodily sensations that augment the illusion of complete bod

Extra-analytic contacts: fantasy and reality.

E-A.C. are avoided in our practice and literature. However, they often blur the distinction between transferential illusion and reality, more so in training analyses. E-A.C. excite the patient's curiosity, exhibitionism and 'primal scene' fantasies with their concomitant anxieties. Such fears lead patients to phobically avoid analysing these encounters, whose effects analysts may also dread. However, calling attention to the avoidance may promote significant analytic developments. Illusion on the psychoanalytic stage is a regressive force which brings out significant affects and internalized r

Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation Advancements for Spatial Disorientation Training.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial disorientation (SD) remains the leading contributor to Class A mishaps in the U.S. Navy, consistent with historical trends. Despite this, SD training for military aircrew is largely confined to the classroom and experiential training replicating SD illusions is limited and infrequent. Static flight simulators are most commonly used for training but offer no vestibular stimulation to the flight crew, omitting the source of vestibular-mediated SD.BACKGROUND: We first cover vestibular-mediated SD illusions which may be replicated through galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS)…

Serotonergic Hallucinogen-Induced Visual Perceptual Alterations.

Serotonergic hallucinogens, such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin, and N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), are famous for their capacity to temporally and profoundly alter an individual's visual experiences. These visual alterations show consistent attributes despite large inter- and intra-individual variances. Many reports document a common perception of colors as more saturated, with increased brightness and contrast in the environment ("Visual Intensifications"). Environmental objects might be altered in size ("Visual illusions") or take on a modified and special meaning for the su…

A new visual problem: phenomenic folding.

It is possible to produce outline drawings that are perceived as representations of sheets or plates folded over themselves. However, only some of the many possible representations are immediately and necessarily perceived as such. Investigations were carried out to find out which elements must be included in a drawing if a subject is to perceive folding. Four necessary, though not individually sufficient, factors were detected. Other factors which are not necessary but which can intensify the perception of folding were also found. The four necessary factors are: (i) the existence of two pheno

Effects of Expectation, Attention, and NMDA Receptor Blockade on Feedforward and Feedback Processing.

Perception is increasingly viewed as an inferential process wherein sensory inputs are integrated with prior expectations. We employed time-resolved decoding on electroencephalography (EEG) data (n = 30 male participants) to investigate how expectations modulate sensory processing across varying levels of stimulus complexity and tested the effect of attention and NMDA receptor blockade. We designed a visual stimulus containing features of different complexity whose processing relies on distinct neural mechanisms: local contrast, collinearity, and the Kanizsa illusion, involving primarily feedf

Boosted activation of right inferior frontoparietal network: a basis for illusory movement awareness.

The feeling of illusory movement is considered important in the study of human behavior because it is deeply related to motor consciousness. … ght inferior frontal gyrus and the right inferior parietal lobule, was more active in subjects with illusions. On the other hand, levels of activation in other brain areas involved in kinaesthetic processing were rather similar between the two subsamples of subjects. These results suggest that activation of the right inferior frontoparietal areas, once pass …
