BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been frequently reported in patients with primary immunodeficiency; however, the frequency and pattern of immunological abnormalities among adult patients with established IBD remain insufficiently characterized. We aimed to systematically evaluate immunological parameters in adult patients with established IBD. Additionally, we sought to identify clinical factors associated with laboratory-defined immunological deviations.
METHODS: In this retrospective observational cohort study, we analyzed 108 adults with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colit

Mmammalian pregnancy involves prolonged, intimate interactions between genetically dissimilar organisms. This dissimilarity evokes an immunological response in the gravida which promotes placental implantation and fetal viability. The nature of the immunological reactions, the factors moderating these responses and the signficance of abnormalities in the responses are discussed.

BACKGROUND: ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation is an essential strategy to expand the donor pool for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). However, it poses significant immunological challenges because of the risk of graft rejection. In Saudi Arabia, where ABOi transplants are limited, there is a paucity of long-term locoregional data on the impact of immunological factors on graft outcomes. This study evaluated ABOi transplant outcomes in patients with more than 5 years of follow-up, with a primary focus on immunological factors and their role in graft survival and reject

Food allergy is an adverse reaction to certain foods that have demonstrated "immunological mechanisms"; therefore, this term covers both food allergies mediated or not by immunoglobulin E (IgE). The common pathophysiological mechanism among forms of allergy to foods mediated or not by IgE is found in the failure of clinical and immunological tolerance towards that food. The induction and maintenance of immunological tolerance depends on the active generation of regulatory T cells specific for food antigens. This process is influenced by genetic factors (FOXP3 genes) and epigenetic factors cond

PROBLEM: A recent hypothesis has implicated superfertility as a cause of recurrent pregnancy loss. Clinical support for the concept comes from one report that 40% of women experiencing recurrent miscarriages had monthly fecundity rates of 60% or greater and thus were designated as superfertile.
METHODS OF STUDY: To confirm or refute this finding, clinical histories of 201 women with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss were reviewed and months to desired pregnancy, karyotypes of their products of conception as well as results of laboratory tests including antiphospholipid antibodies and circ

Serum protein concentrations and 4 immunologic factors were determined in 5 Basenji dogs with immunoproliferative small intestinal disease. There was no correlation between the total serum proteins, immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M concentrations, and physical health status of the animals. The severity of clinical signs correlated roughly with decrease in albumin and increase in globulin concentrations. The main changes were detected in beta- and fast gamma-globulins. The total hemolytic complement levels were decreased in the 2 most severely affected animals below the minimal laboratory …

A patient with disseminated coccidioidomycosis initially had pulmonary and skin manifestations and survived for 14 years before dying of meningitis due to Coccidioides immitis. In addition to several courses of amphotericin B therapy the patient received injections of transfer factor derived from appropriate donors and miconazole nitrate therapy. The immunologic defence mechanisms of the patient during the course of his disease were studied and the possibility of a cell-mediated immunologic defect, potentially reversible by transfer factor, was demonstrated.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of polio vaccines in the 1950's and 60's, eradication of poliovirus from the world has been technically feasible. Progress towards this goal, however, has been uneven and influenced by social and political factors that challenge the implementation of robust immunization programs. While violence and insecurity are often cited as barriers to eradication, current global risk models are largely based on virologic and immunologic indicators measured at national levels. In this manuscript, we quantify the relevance of indicators of violence and insecurity on the ri

BACKGROUND: Although stem cell therapy (SCT) is emerging as a potential treatment for patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), clinical response remains variable. Our objective was to determine whether baseline differences in circulating immunologic and nonimmunologic biomarkers may help to identify patients more likely to respond to intramyocardial injection of CD34(+)-based SCT.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We enrolled from January 3, 2011 to March 5, 2012 37 patients with longstanding DCM (left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF] <40%, New York Heart Association functional class III) who under

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) has a very complicated pathogenesis and male factors for this condition should not to be ignored, which are mainly related to genetics, immunology, infection, sperm quality, and others. In case of RSA, an etiological screening ought to be performed for the husband, which involves general, genetic and immunological examinations and infection detection. According to specific etiological factors, such measures as genetic consultation, immunotherapy, and traditional Chinese medication can be taken, which may contribute to the outcome of pregnancy.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disorder that significantly impairs quality of life. While its pathogenesis involves genetic, immunologic, and environmental components, emerging evidence highlights the substantial impact of modifiable lifestyle factors on disease onset and progression. This review summarizes the current understanding of how lifestyle-related elements interact with the inflammatory milieu in HS. Beneficial factors, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D, play a protective role by suppressing proinflamm

The phenomenon of late renal allograft loss accounts for 80% of the patients listed as returning to end-stage renal disease after kidney transplantation. This recidivism problem, which is seen as an inexorable decline in actuarial graft survival following the first year after transplantation, has a number of causes. There is good evidence that both immunologic and nonimmunologic factors are important in late graft loss. Newer DNA-based methods for histocompatibility testing permit more accurate assessment of risk for ultimate graft survival. Nonimmunologic risk factors for chronic graft dysfun…

To investigate the clinical, virologic and immunologic consequences of planned treatment interruptions in chronically HIV-infected patients. One hundred forty-one patients with undetectable viral load for at least 6 months and CD4+ T cells count greater than 500 per microliter were recruited. Their antiretroviral therapy was stopped and clinical, analytic, virologic, and immunologic data were recorded at baseline, during discontinuation, and after restarting treatment. Viral load rebound after discontinuation in 137 (97%) patients, and was similar to prehighly active antiretroviral therapy (HA

Slit is a secreted protein known to function through the Roundabout (Robo) receptor. Slit has recently been shown to be an endogenously available inhibitor of leukocyte chemotaxis and as a chemoattractant to recruit vascular endothelial cells to sites for angiogenesis both in vivo and in vitro. The initiation and progression of periodontal diseases, is the result of complex interactions between the colonizing bacteria in the periodontal pockets and host immune and inflammatory responses. Antibiotics such as tetracyclines are commonly used in the management of periodontal infections and yet, ha

The recombinant Hc proteins of botulinum neurotoxins and tetanus toxin are exclusively produced by intracellular heterologous expression in Pichia pastoris for use in subunit vaccines; the same Hc proteins produced by secreted heterologous expression are hyper-glycosylated and immunologically inert. Here, several different recombinant secreted Hc proteins of botulinum neurotoxin serotype B (BHc) were expressed in yeast and we characterized and assessed their immunological activity in detail. Recombinant low-glycosylated secreted BHc products (BSK) were also immunologically inert, similar to hy

BACKGROUND: Isolated limb perfusion (ILP) is a regional treatment for patients with melanoma in-transit metastases (ITM) confined to extremities. Reported complete response (CR) rates for ILP varies but is approximately 50-70 %. This study aims to analyze if specific immunological phenotypes could predict CR after ILP.
METHODS: 132 patients undergoing ILP as a first treatment for melanoma ITM between January 2012 and March 2023 were included. The number and percentage of naïve and memory T and B cell subtypes, and natural killer (NK) cells, were characterized by analyzing pre-operative blood

Gaucher disease (GD), one of the most common lysosomal storage diseases, is caused by mutations in the gene, GBA1, that leads to defective glucocerebrosidase activity resulting in the accumulation and storage of glycosphingolipids. However, the pathophysiology of GD is more complicated leading to various associated conditions such as skeletal manifestations and Parkinson's disease (PD). These may result from oxidative stress and inflammatory responses due to complex interconnection of downstream factors such as substrate accumulation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, unfolded protein respons
