Toward a Demographic Understanding of Incarceration Disparities: Race, Ethnicity, and Age Structure.

OBJECTIVES: Non-Hispanic blacks and Hispanics in the United States are more likely to be incarcerated than non-Hispanic whites. The risk of incarceration also varies with age, and there are striking differences in age distributions across racial/ethnic groups. Guided by these trends, the present study examines the extent to which differences in age structure account for incarceration disparities across racial and ethnic groups. METHODS: We apply two techniques commonly employed in the field of demography, age-standardization and decomposition, to data provided by the Bureau of Justice Statist…

Incarceration of people living with HIV/AIDS: implications for treatment-as-prevention.

Contact with the criminal justice system, including incarceration, is a common experience for many people living with HIV/AIDS. Optimism has recently been expressed that correctional facilities could be important locations for treatment-as-prevention (TasP)-based initiatives. We review recent findings regarding the effect of incarceration on patterns of HIV transmission, testing, treatment initiation and retention. We found that the prevalence of HIV infection among incarcerated individuals remains higher than analogous non-incarcerated populations. Recent studies have shown that voluntary HIV…

[Congenital trans-mesenteric hernia with incarceration in a five-year-old boy].

This is a case report of a five-year-old boy, presenting with abdominal pain and signs of gastrointestinal emergency imitating appendicitis. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed an incarcerated internal hernia involving 50 cm of ischaemic small bowel. Bowel resection and primary anastomosis was performed. The post-operative outcome was uneventful. We wish to shed light on a seldom but important differential diagnosis to appendicitis in children, and raise attention to internal hernias in patients presenting with acute abdomen, whether it is due to congenital defects or a post-operative complication

Incarceration of umbilical hernia after radiological insertion of a Denver peritoneovenous shunt.

We report a rare complication of incarceration of an umbilical hernia after Denver peritoneovenous shunt placement. A 50-year-old man presented with refractory ascites from liver cirrhosis. He also had an umbilical hernia. Because the ascites became uncontrollable, Denver peritoneovenous shunting was performed. The operation was successful and the ascites decreased. Ten days later, however, incarceration of the umbilical hernia occurred. A surgical repair was performed, but he died 2 days later. The cause of death was considered to be sepsis.

Hepatitis A/B vaccine completion among homeless adults with history of incarceration.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination rates for incarcerated adults remain low despite their high risk for infection. This study determined predictors of vaccine completion in homeless adults (N= 297) who reported histories of incarceration and who participated in one of three nurse-led hepatitis programs of different intensity. Moreover time since release from incarceration was also considered. Just over half of the former prisoners completed the vaccine series. Older age (≥40), having a partner, and chronic homelessness were associated with vaccine completion. Recent research has documented th…

Mental health and other risk factors for jail incarceration among male veterans.

Data derived from the 2002 Survey of Inmates in Local Jails and the 2000 National Survey of Veterans show that having mental health problems in addition to such sociodemographic characteristics as being a member of a minority group, not being married, having less education, and being younger are risk factors for incarceration among veterans, as they are for the general population. As in previous studies veterans who served during the Vietnam Era and to an even greater extent, those who served in the early years of the All Volunteer Force were at greater risk of incarceration than veterans from…

Incarceration and high-risk sex partnerships among men in the United States.

Incarceration is associated with multiple and concurrent partnerships, which are determinants of sexually transmitted infections (STI), including HIV. The associations between incarceration and high-risk sex partnerships may exist, in part, because incarceration disrupts stable sex partnerships, some of which are protective against high-risk sex partnerships. When investigating STI/HIV risk among those with incarceration histories, it is important to consider the potential role of drug use as a factor contributing to sexual risk behavior. First, incarceration's influence on sexual risk taking …

History of arrest, incarceration and victimization in community-based severely mentally ill.

This study examined history of arrest and victimization in an urban community sample of severely mentally ill adults. Adults (n = 308) were consented and interviewed in one of four short-term residential treatment facilities in San Francisco. Nearly three quarters (71.4%) had been arrested at some time in their lives, 28.2% of whom had been arrested in the past 6 months. Substance use and homelessness were associated with history of arrest, while gender and ethnicity were not, although African Americans were more likely to have spent longer time in jail or prison. One quarter (25.6%) reported

[Revision of iris incarceration after trabeculectomy in congenital glaucoma. A case report].

BACKGROUND: Incarceration of the iris is a potential complication following trabeculectomy in primary congenital glaucoma. Although this complication is mentioned in the literature, nothing is reported about the technique of surgical revision. PATIENT: In a patient with primary congenital glaucoma we had to perform surgical revision of the anterior chamber, because progressive pupil peaking had developed after trabeculectomy and the optical axis had been obstructed. Simple resolving of uveal tissue from the incarceration site was not possible; the iris incarceration had to be cut under gonios…

Incarceration and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: autopsy results in Texas prison inmates.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) houses many subjects with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who receive medical care in a comprehensive AIDS treatment center. In this case-control autopsy survey, we compared pathological outcomes of TDCJ inmates treated at the center (n = 155) with nonincarcerated patients who died during the same period (n = 155). Using multiple regression analysis and a proportional hazards model, survival time in the prisoners was equivalent to that in the controls. With few exceptions, the prevalences of opportunistic viral, fungal, protozoal, and b

Intestinal incarceration in occult abdominal wall herniae in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

Herniae are a common complication of treatment with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). The diagnosis is often difficult because the hernia may not be apparent, or because the symptoms may mimic peritonitis or other severe abdominal complications. This report describes the occurrence of intestinal incarceration in an occult incisional hernia in two CAPD patients. The possibility of this diagnosis must be considered in CAPD patients complaining of severe abdominal pain.

Formerly Incarcerated Community Health Workers Engaging Individuals Returning From Incarceration Into Primary Care: Results From the Transition Clinic Network.

Over half a million individuals return from United States prisons and millions more from jails every year, many of whom with complex health and social needs. Community health workers (CHWs) perform diverse roles to improve health outcomes in disadvantaged communities, but no studies have assessed their role as integrated members of a primary care team serving individuals returning from incarceration. Using data from participants who received primary care through the Transitions Clinic Network, a model of care that integrates CHWs with a lived experienced of incarceration into primary care team…

"I Kicked the Hard Way. I Got Incarcerated." Withdrawal from Methadone During Incarceration and Subsequent Aversion to Medication Assisted Treatments.

Incarceration is a common experience for individuals with opioid use disorder, including those receiving medication assisted treatments (MAT), such as buprenorphine or methadone. In the United States, MAT is rarely available during incarceration. We were interested in whether challenges with methadone maintenance treatment during incarceration affected subsequent attitudes toward MAT following release. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 formerly incarcerated individuals with opioid use disorder in community substance abuse treatment settings. Interviews were audio recorded, transc…

Posttraumatic stress disorder among incarcerated battered women: a comparison of battered women who killed their abusers and those incarcerated for other offenses.

The present study examined differences in the amount and severity of spousal violence and posttraumatic stress symptoms between incarcerated battered women who killed/seriously assaulted their abusers and battered women incarcerated for other offenses. Additionally, several risk and buffering variables suggested by trauma research were tested to determine their ability to predict present posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology. Findings revealed that battered women who killed/seriously assaulted their batterers experienced more frequent and severe spousal abuse than those in the co

Exploring BMI Classification Changes and Disparities Upon Incarceration in U.S. Federal Prisons.

Information on body mass index (BMI) fluctuations during multiyear incarceration is limited, with publications on BMI changes leading to reclassification even more sparse. This is particularly important because access to novel treatments, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) therapies, in the United States depends on BMI classification rather than the exact BMI value. This retrospective analysis explores BMI classification changes over 2 years to assist public health interventions. The dataset included 30,693 individuals with at least two recorded height and weight measurements, accounting …

Transverse colon incarceration and necrosis in a hiatal hernia: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Incarcerated necrosis of the transverse colon is a rare but severe complication of hiatal hernia. While Type I hiatal hernias are common, Type IV hernias involving other abdominal organs are infrequent. This case aims to alert clinicians to this condition's atypical manifestations to ensure timely surgical intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old female was admitted with a 2-day history of vomiting, abdominal distension, and acid reflux. Following admission, she developed hematochezia. An emergency contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed a Type IV hiatal hernia

Incarceration Trauma From the Perspective of Individuals With Mental Illness: Therapeutic Implications.

Traumatic experiences are prevalent within the criminal justice system, disproportionately impacting individuals with mental illness. This study examines the trauma experiences of participants (n = 30) who reported incarceration trauma and had a mental health diagnosis prior to incarceration. Participants completed demographic questionnaires, trauma assessments, and interviews. Eighteen met criteria for incarceration-related PTSD or CPTSD, although only six had reported a previous PTSD diagnosis. Participants viewed traumatic experiences in an expansive way. Experiences included exposure to vi…
