Religion and Recovery Among Individuals Experiencing Homelessness.

Faith-based organizations provide essential recovery services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Research suggests that religion and spirituality aid recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, although less is known about these factors in homeless populations. This study used qualitative interviews to explore the role of religion in recovery from addiction in a sample of 14 adults with a history of homelessness. Analysis of emergent themes revealed that religion provided participants with a range of personal and social benefits, many which addressed personal, social, and tangible losses

Perceived Limitations of Walking in Individuals With Cerebral Palsy.

OBJECTIVE: Impairments associated with cerebral palsy (CP) can affect gait quality and limit activity and participation. The purpose of this study was to quantify (1) which of 6 factors (pain, weakness, endurance, mental ability, safety concerns, balance) were perceived to limit walking ability the most in individuals with CP and (2) whether age or Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level is related to that perception. METHODS: This cross-sectional study queried data from a gait laboratory database. Perceived walking limitation was quantified using a 5-point Likert scale ("nev

The Experience of Working With Individuals Who Sexually Offend.

Providing treatment to those who have committed sexual offenses can be difficult and challenging work. Older studies have suggested that service providers may experience changes in mood, symptoms of trauma, and countertransference reactions due to their work. Recent research has found that effective coping and self-care strategies may mitigate these negative outcomes. Given the relative dearth of recent empirical studies, we assessed the prevalence of self-reported mood, trauma symptoms, and countertransference reactions and their relation to coping styles and self-care practices in a sample o

Medications for daytime sleepiness in individuals with idiopathic hypersomnia.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic hypersomnia is a disorder of excessive daytime sleepiness, often accompanied by long sleep times or pronounced difficulty in awakening, in the absence of a known cause. The optimal treatment strategy for idiopathic hypersomnia is currently unknown. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of medications for daytime sleepiness and related symptoms in individuals with idiopathic hypersomnia and, in particular, whether medications may: 1. reduce subjective measures of sleepiness; 2. reduce objective measures of sleepiness; 3. reduce symptoms of cognitive dysfunction; 4. improve q

Abnormal tau in amyloid PET negative individuals.

We examined the characteristics of individuals with biomarker evidence of tauopathy but without β-amyloid (Aβ) (A-T+) in relation to individuals with (A+T+) and without (A-T-) evidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We included 561 participants with Aβ and tau PET from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). We compared A-T- (n = 316), A-T+ (n = 63), and A+T+ (n = 182) individuals on demographics, amyloid, tau, hippocampal volumes, and cognition. A-T+ individuals were low on apolipoprotein E ɛ4 prevalence (17%) and had no evidence of subtly elevated brain Aβ within the negative r

Safety evaluation of emicizumab prophylaxis in individuals with haemophilia A.

INTRODUCTION: Emicizumab is a bispecific-humanized monoclonal antibody that improves hemostasis by bridging activated factor IX and factor X to substitute for the function of missing activated FVIII. It is an alternative to prophylaxis with factor VIII replacement and is associated with improved outcomes in individuals with hemophilia A with and without inhibitors. AREAS COVERED: Emicizumab is efficacious in reducing bleeding events when compared to on-demand treatment and factor-based prophylaxis. Except for the few thrombotic microangiopathy and thrombotic event cases mainly seen in the HAV

Behavioral and cognitive functioning in individuals with Cantú syndrome.

Cantú syndrome (CS) is caused by pathogenic variants in ABCC9 and KCNJ8 encoding the regulatory and pore-forming subunits of ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP ) channels. CS is characterized by congenital hypertrichosis, distinctive facial features, peripheral edema, and cardiac and neurodevelopmental abnormalities. Behavioral and cognitive issues have been self-reported by some CS individuals, but results of formal standardized investigations have not been published. To assess the cognitive profile, social functioning, and psychiatric symptoms in a large group of CS subjects systematically in a c

Nivolumab-associated DRESS in a genetic susceptible individual.

The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) is rising exponentially in numerous cancers, but immune-related adverse events can occur. We report a rare case of high-grade drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome developed stepwise in a patient with gastric cancer after nivolumab treatment. Subclinical myocarditis was sensitively detected by cardiovascular magnetic resonance 3 weeks after initiating nivolumab. Eruption, eosinophilia, and interstitial pneumonitis occurred 1 week later. Corticosteroids were started and his condition improved. Four months later, whe

The behavioral presentation of an individual with a disordered sense of self.

There is increased recognition that the brain processes a "sense of self" (best understood as a sense of "mineness") in the right hemisphere association area and which can be distorted due to neurologic injury. Although there are numerous descriptions of types of disorders of the self (e.g., asomatognosia, anosognosia, mirror misidentification disorder, Capgras syndrome, schizophrenia), there are few descriptions of the subjective experiences of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who experience a reduced sense of self. This article presents a longitudinal case study of a woman in he

Individualizing Care: Management Beyond Medical Therapy.

The evolving research landscape, with advances in the omics technologies, availability of large-scale patient cohorts, and forthcoming availability of novel drugs in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), is creating a unique opportunity for developing a precision medicine (PM) program. PM has potential to change the paradigm of management. Diagnostic work-up of PBC patients may include information on genetic variants and molecular signature to define a particular subtype of disease and provide an estimate of treatment response and survival. To reach this point, specific interventions, such as seq

Parotidectomy via Individualized Mini-Blair Incision.

BACKGROUND: The modified Blair incision is the standard facial incision for the vast majority of parotid gland lesions. We utilize three types of incisions: "classic mini-Blair" for parotid body tumors, "cervical mini-Blair" for parotid tail tumors, and "vertical mini-Blair" for anterior parotid tumors. In this study, we describe the surgical and esthetic outcomes of these individually tailored incisions. METHODS: Patients undergoing parotidectomy between 2011 and 2013 were included. The surgical outcomes and patients' satisfaction were assessed. RESULTS: Of 122 patients, 89 were included. A

Quality of Life in Individuals with Diabetic Foot Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) is a common long-term complication of diabetes mellitus. DFS has recently been associated with adverse effects that could further impair the quality of life of diabetic patients, and increase the social and economic burden, morbidity, and premature mortality of the disease. The main physio-pathological basis of DFS is due to diabetesinduced neuropathy and angiopathy in the lower limbs and feet. Patients diagnosed with DFS must significantly modify their daily habits in order to cope with signs and symptoms of DFS and this can alter their q

Electrocardiogram abnormalities in older individuals by race and ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Aging is associated with many ECG changes. ECG abnormalities are known to be more prevalent with age and differ across race and ethnicity, yet there are limited studies categorizing the ECG changes in the older population and the differences seen among racial groups. We sought to determine ECG differences associated with race and ethnicity in this ethnically diverse, elderly population. METHODS: The ECG parameters of subjects between the ages of 75 and 99 years from a large and diverse inner-city patient population were analyzed. Subjects were grouped into one of four categories:

Progression of Vasculopathy in Young Individuals with Turner Syndrome.

Vasculopathy has been identified in young individuals with Turner syndrome (TS). No studies in young individuals with TS have investigated whether this vasculopathy progresses over time. The objective of this study is to describe the changes in vasculopathy over time in a cohort of young individuals with TS. Repeat ultrasound and SphygmoCor CPV® (AtCor Medical) measurements of carotid thickness and peripheral arterial stiffness were performed. Vascular measurements were compared at baseline and follow-up. Follow-up measurements were also compared to historical lean (L) and obese (O) age-, race

The oropharyngeal microbiome is altered in individuals with schizophrenia and mania.

It is being increasingly recognized that human mucosal surfaces are not sterile but are colonized with microorganisms collectively known as the microbiome. The microbiome can alter brain functioning in humans and animals by way of a series of interactions operative in the brain-immune-gut interactome. We characterized the oropharyngeal microbiome in 316 individuals, including 121 with schizophrenia, 62 with mania, 48 with major depressive disorder, and 85 controls without a psychiatric disorder. We found that the oropharyngeal microflora of individuals with schizophrenia and individuals with m

The multimodality neuroimage findings in individuals with Tourette syndrome.

Chronic tic disorder and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome are very common childhood-onset diseases. However, the pathophysiology underlying these disorders is not yet clear and most studies focus on the disinhibition of the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical circuit. Although dysfunction of this circuit is possible, routine clinical neuroimaging studies such as T1-weighted or T2-weighted MRI usually reveal normal results. Therefore, special neuroimaging techniques may be needed to investigate the possible microstructural or functional changes in the brain. Previous structural studies, such as tho

Holographic virtual staining of individual biological cells.

Many medical and biological protocols for analyzing individual biological cells involve morphological evaluation based on cell staining, designed to enhance imaging contrast and enable clinicians and biologists to differentiate between various cell organelles. However, cell staining is not always allowed in certain medical procedures. In other cases, staining may be time-consuming or expensive to implement. Staining protocols may be operator-sensitive, and hence may lead to varying analytical results, as well as cause artificial imaging artifacts or false heterogeneity. We present a deep-learn
