Musical intervention and food preferences in girls born with lower birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Children born after intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), especially girls, show an increased intake of palatable foods in several developmental stages, which likely contributes to their increased risk for obesity later. Recently, neuroimaging studies suggested that musical exposure activates the mesolimbic region, which is also involved in the processing of food rewards. AIMS: We evaluated the impact of musical intervention in mother/infant pairs on feeding behavior during childhood with regard to birth weight. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study. SUBJECTS: A total of 28 children expo

[Preoperative infusion therapy in childhood. I. Initial conditions and principles].

Infusion therapy for purposes of surgery differs significantly from the infusion requirements for "conservative" purposes, in adults as well as in infants and children. The preoperative situation of infants and children undergoing usual surgical procedures is particularly characterized by 1. the physiological conditions of the water-, electrolyte- and acid-base-balances; 2. the effects of the preoperative food-and fluid-restrictions; 3. the intraoperative fluid- and volumen-losses; 4. the combination between 1--3 and the postoperative food- and fluid-restriction and the postoperative metabolic

Use of Phadiatop Infant in diagnosis of specific sensitization in young children with wheeze or eczema.

Wheezing and eczema are common symptoms in young children and it is important to disclose sensitization for correct management. The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic values of Phadiatop Infant, an in vitro test for graded determination of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to food and inhalant allergens. One-hundred and forty-nine children (median age 1.4 yr) with symptoms of wheezing (51%) eczema (28%) or a combination of both (21%) were classified as atopic or non-atopic based on case history, atopic history, physical examination and determination of IgE antibodies. The cli

Heavy metal exposures in aerodigestive clinic cohort of infants with reflux or dysphagia.

Infant cereals (rice/oatmeal), purees, and anti-reflux formulas are often first line treatments for thickening in infants with reflux and oropharyngeal dysphagia. However, there has been growing concern about heavy metal contamination, especially arsenic, in these commonly used thickeners. This is a particular concern in infants who may be more susceptible to heavy metal neurotoxicity. The study aimed to assess whether there are differences in heavy metal levels, particularly arsenic, in infants with reflux or oropharyngeal dysphagia while on different thickeners. We performed a single center

Feeding of lactic acid-fermented high nutrient density weaning formula in paediatric settings in Ghana and Nigeria: acceptance by mother and infant and performance during recovery from acute diarrhoea.

A period of acute diarrhoea in infants is often associated with anorexia and weight loss. Catch-up growth is, therefore, necessary and this depends very much on the type of food, in terms of nutrient density, protein quality and digestibility, given to the child. Fermented (F) and non-fermented (NF) maize-soybean porridges of increased nutrient density were formulated and compared with traditionally fermented maize-only porridge (P) for acceptability using mothers in peri-urban Ghana as well as urban Nigeria as subjects. Subsequently, infants hospitalised in paediatric wards for acute diarrhoe

Nutritious Supplemental Foods for Pregnant Women from Food Insecure Settings: Types, Nutritional Composition, and Relationships to Health Outcomes.

There is growing evidence that the provision of nutritious supplemental foods to undernourished pregnant women can improve maternal and infant outcomes. However, comparing and synthesizing the evidence base is complicated by differences in interventions and products and the use of ambiguous terminology. We aimed to define 2 common types of nutritious supplemental foods used in pregnancy, balanced energy-protein (BEP) supplements and lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS), and to review the evidence supporting each via a narrative review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMAs). Associations of Colic and Excessive Crying in Infancy with Food Allergy Outcomes in Childhood and Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent to which food allergies and food-specific IgE levels in childhood and adolescence differ among children who had infant colic, excessive crying without colic, or neither condition. STUDY DESIGN: We prospectively followed children in the unselected Project Viva pre-birth cohort. We assessed parent-reported colic (unsoothable crying + apparent abdominal discomfort) and excessive crying without colic in infancy and examined associations with parent-reported food allergy from early childhood through mid-adolescence using multivariable logistic regression. High levels of IgG4 antibodies to foods during infancy are associated with tolerance to corresponding foods later in life.

Children with eczema and sensitization to foods are recommended skin care and, if food allergy is proven by challenge, an elimination diet. For most children the diet period is transient, but the process behind tolerance development and the influence of decreased allergen exposure is not fully known. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of elimination diet on serum and salivary antibodies and to identify immunological parameters related to the ability to tolerate foods. Eighty-nine children, below 2 yr of age, with eczema and suspected food allergy were included. Recommended trea

The role of respiratory failure caused by congenital central nervous system abnormalities and the effect of β-casomorphins in sudden infant death syndrome pathogenesis.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the role of respiratory failure caused by endogenous (both structural and functional) abnormalities in the central nervous system and exogenous food-derived opioid-like peptides in the pathogenesis of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). By stimulating μ-opioid receptors, opioid-like peptides may suppress the tonic activity of the respiratory centre in the brain stem.

Non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy.

Non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food-induced allergic disorders (non-IgE-GI-FAs) account for an unknown proportion of food allergies and include food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES), food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP), and food protein-induced enteropathy (FPE). Non-IgE-GI-FAs are separate clinical entities but have many overlapping clinical and histologic features among themselves and with eosinophilic gastroenteropathies. Over the past decade, FPIES has emerged as the most actively studied non-IgE-GI-FA, potentially because of acute and distinct clinical fea

Infant nutrition and allergy.

Over the past several decades, the incidence of atopic diseases such as asthma, atopic dermatitis and food allergies has increased dramatically. Although atopic diseases have a clear genetic basis, environmental factors, including early infant nutrition, may have an important influence on their development. Therefore, attempts have been made to reduce the risk of the development of allergy using dietary modifications, mainly focused on longer breast-feeding and delayed introduction or elimination of foods identified as potentially most allergenic. Recently, there is also an increasing interest

Eating disorders of infancy and childhood: definition, symptomatology, epidemiology, and comorbidity.

This article describes a range of problem feeding and eating presentations seen in infants and children. In diagnostic terms some fall under the category of "feeding disorder," whereas others are childhood presentations of the eating disorders "anorexia nervosa," "bulimia nervosa," and atypical forms of these. Several other commonly occurring presentations that are difficult to fit into existing diagnostic categories are additionally described here, including "selective eating," "food avoidance emotional disorder," "food phobias," "functional dysphagia," and "food refusal."

Allergic disease in infants up to 2 years of age in relation to plasma omega-3 fatty acids and maternal fish oil supplementation in pregnancy and lactation.

We have previously reported a protective effect of maternal omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 LCPUFA) supplementation in pregnancy and lactation on IgE-associated eczema and food allergy in the infant during the first year of life. Here we investigate whether the effects of the LCPUFA supplementation on IgE-associated diseases last up to 2 yr of age and assess the relationship between plasma proportions of ω-3 PUFAs and the frequency and severity of infant allergic disease. 145 pregnant women, at risk of having an allergic infant, were randomized to daily supplementation with

Early intervention with suplatast tosilate for prophylaxis of pediatric atopic asthma: a pilot study.

The onset of asthma may be related to Th2 cytokine dominance at the time when food allergies occur several months after birth. This study investigated the effectiveness of early intervention with a Th2 cytokine inhibitor (suplatast tosilate) for prevention of asthma in infants with food allergies and atopic dermatitis. Suplatast tosilate dry syrup (6 mg/kg daily) or a histamine H(1)-blocker (ketotifen fumarate dry syrup: 0.06 mg/kg daily) was administered randomly to 53 infants with atopic dermatitis caused by food allergies. The primary endpoints were the incidence of asthma and the time to t

Dry stress and survival time of Enterobacter sakazakii and other Enterobacteriaceae in dehydrated powdered infant formula.

Powdered infant formula is not a sterile product, and opportunistic pathogens could multiply in the reconstituted product, resulting in neonatal infections. In this study, the generation of sublethally injured Enterobacteriaceae during desiccation and their persistence in dehydrated powdered infant formula was assessed during a 2.5-year period. The study included 27 strains of Enterobacter sakazakii, Enterobacter cloacae, Salmonella Enteritidis, Citrobacter koseri, Citrobacter freundii, Escherichia coli, Escherichia vulneris, Pantoea spp., Klebsiella oxytoca, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
