Differences in Early Childhood Dietary Behaviors by Infant Feeding Type and Sex.

BACKGROUND: Type of infant feeding has been linked to later nutritional outcomes, including dietary diversity and obesity in childhood. Little is known about how introduction to complementary feeding and diet quality in early childhood vary by infant feeding type and sex. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to investigate whether early childhood dietary patterns vary by infant feeding type and sex. METHODS: Data from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Infants and Toddler Feeding Practices Study 2 (ITFPS-2) was used, including children with complete inf

Non Breast-Milk-Fed Very Preterm Infants Are at Increased Risk of Iron Deficiency at 4-6-Months Corrected Age: A Retrospective Population-Based Cohort Study.

Iron supplementation is routinely recommended for breast-milk-fed preterm infants. However, the Canadian Pediatric Society recommends no additional iron supplementation for preterm infants fed primarily with iron-rich formula. Other pediatric societies don't provide specific guidance on supplemental iron for formula-fed preterm infants. This study investigated how feeding type influences iron status of very preterm infants at 4-6-months corrected age (CA). A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a population-based database on all very preterm infants (<31 weeks gestational age) born i

Association between type of feeding at hospital discharge and nutritional status of Brazilian very preterm infants: a multicenter study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine trends over time in diet and size of very preterm infants, and associations of diet with size at hospital discharge/transfer. METHODS: The authors studied 4062 surviving very preterm infants born < 32 weeks' gestational age and < 1500 g between January 2012 and December 2020 from 12 Brazilian Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Diet type at discharge/transfer was classified as exclusive human milk, exclusive formula, or mixed. Outcomes were weight and head circumference at hospital discharge and the change in each from birth to discharge. The authors used linear regression t

Feeding-based treatment of allergic proctocolitis and associated clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Allergic colitis (AC) is one of the most common etiologies of rectal bleeding in infants aged one to six months. AIM: The aim of this study is to apply step-by-step dietary restrictions in the mother's diet or change of infant formula fed thereby, to evaluate the subsequent clinical response. METHODS: Sixty healthy infants whose clinical and evaluation results indicated proctocolitis in our outpatient gastroenterology clinic were included in this. They were divided into three groups according to the type of feeding; group 1 were exclusively breast fed, group 2 were exclusively fo…

Enterocolitis in low-birth-weight infants associated with milk and soy protein intolerance.

Two low-birth-weight infants developed a syndrome of vomitting, distension, septic appearance, and bloody diarrhea. Both infants developed symptoms after ingestion of cow milk-based formula initially, and, later, soy-based formulas. These symptoms resolved with intravenous fluids and alimentation. Vomiting, diarrhea, melena, and polymorphonuclear leukocytosis recurred with reintroduction of either milk- or soy-based formulas. This sensitivity persisted throughout the neonatal period and was still present at seven to eight months of age. It appears from these data that intolerance to whole prot

Voxel-Based Morphometry and fMRI Revealed Differences in Brain Gray Matter in Breastfed and Milk Formula-Fed Children.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Infant diets may have significant impact on brain development in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate brain gray matter structure and function in 8-year-old children who were predominantly breastfed or fed cow's milk formula as infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two healthy children (breastfed: n = 22, 10 boys and 12 girls; cow's milk formula: n = 20, 10 boys and 10 girls) were studied by using structural MR imaging (3D T1-weighted imaging) and blood oxygen level-dependent fMRI (while performing tasks involving visual perception and language functions). Historical Research: The Origin of 'Formula': State of the Science, 1890s.

In 1900, 13% of infants in the United States died before their first birthday, most of dehydration from diarrhea. As part of a nationwide effort to "save the babies," pediatricians focused on several endeavors-experimenting with commercially made infant-food products; working with dairy farmers to clean up cows' milk; lobbying to pass municipal and state legislation regulating the dairy industry; and devising mathematical "formulas" that represented instructions to chemists on how to "humanize" cows' milk for the needs of a particular infant. Pediatricians dubbed the latter endeavor "percentag

Protein intake in early infancy: effects on plasma amino acid concentrations, insulin metabolism, and growth.

The effects of different protein intakes on wt gain, insulin secretion, and plasma concentrations of amino acids have been evaluated in a prospective study involving 30 normal term infants. The infants were studied from 4.0 to 6.0 mo of age. Ten infants were breast-fed (BF), the others were randomly divided into two groups of 10 infants. One group was fed a formula containing 1.3 g protein/100 mL (F 1.3), the other a formula with 1.8 g protein/100 mL (F 1.8). The formulas were isocaloric (72 kcal/100 mL), and the fat concentrations were 3.5 g/100 mL (F 1.3) and 3.2 g/100 mL (F 1.8). All infant

Increased prevalence of pathogenic bacteria in the gut microbiota of infants at risk of developing celiac disease: The PROFICEL study.

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy involving genetic and environmental factors, whose interaction influences disease risk. The intestinal microbiota, including viruses and bacteria, could play a role in the pathological process leading to gluten intolerance. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of pathogens in the intestinal microbiota of infants at familial risk of developing CD. We included 127 full-term newborns with at least one first-degree relative with CD. Infants were classified according to milk-feeding practice (breastfeeding or formula feeding) and HLA-DQ

Evidence of unmetabolised folic acid in cord blood of newborn and serum of 4-day-old infants.

Oral folic acid above certain threshold doses results in unmetabolised folic acid in serum. This raises a number of public health safety issues, principally the potential to mask pernicious anaemia; more recently the theoretical potential for high-dose folic acid to promote cancer has been highlighted. In this paper we set out to examine the appearance of unmetabolised folic acid both in cord blood from newborn full-term and premature infants and serum from 4-d-old infants post-formula feeding. Blood was collected from the umbilical cord of eleven infants in the delivery room immediately after

Neonatal Meningitis Due to Cronobacter sakazakii.

Cronobacter sakazakii is a new emerging foodborne bacterial pathogen associated with fatal infections such as meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and septicemia in neonates. Powdered infant formula milk has been recognized as one of the main transmission vehicles and contaminated sources of this pathogen. Educating parents about the importance of hygienic reconstitution of powdered infant formula, storage practices, and hand hygiene is crucial to reducing the risk of this life-threatening infection. The clinician should be aware of the special considerations for antimicrobial treatment sele…

Periorificial and acral dermatitis in a newborn having milk intolerance.

A 2-week-old infant born at 36-week gestation developed diarrhea and metabolic acidosis when he was put on formula feeding. He was treated for sepsis and was screened for metabolic diseases. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures were clear. The diarrhea and metabolic acidosis settled but recurred when formula feeding was resumed. He developed a florid erythematous rash involving the palms, feet, perioral and perineal regions. Zinc deficiency was confirmed and zinc replacement resulted in prompt resolution of the skin rash. The patient was put on Pepti-Junior and remained well. This case illus

Use of partially hydrolysed formula in infancy and incidence of eczema, respiratory symptoms or food allergies in toddlers from the ELFE cohort.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Partially hydrolyzed formulas (pHF) are recommended in non-breastfed infants with familial history of allergy to prevent allergy development. However, recent meta-analysis does not provide strong support for their protective effect. The present work assesses the links between 2-month infant formula use and the incidence of eczema, respiratory symptoms, or food allergies (FA) up to 2 years of age. METHODS: The nationwide ELFE birth cohort is a population-based study from mainland France. Infant feeding (breast milk only, partially hydrolyzed formula with [pHF-HA] or …

The calming effect of maternal breast milk odor on premature infants.

BACKGROUND: To compare the effectiveness of maternal breast milk odor and formula milk odor in soothing premature infants undergoing heel lancing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty preterm infants born between 32 weeks and 37 weeks gestation were randomly assigned into two groups. During heel lancing, we used formula milk odor for the first group and breast milk odor for the second group. A filter paper (containing either formula or breast milk) was placed near the infant's nose from 3 minutes prior to and up to 9 minutes after the heel blood sampling. The pain score was measured using premature i

Do infants with gastroschisis may have a high incidence of non-IgE-mediated cow's milk protein allergy?

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To determine the frequency and characteristics of suspected cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) in infants with gastroschisis and response to change in milk. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 111 consecutive infants with gastroschisis. RESULTS: 64 episodes suggesting non-IgE-mediated CMPA occurred in 50 infants (45 %) at a median age of 44 days (9-186) and during the primary admission in 38 %. At the time of the episode the infant feed was breast milk (BM, n = 24), term formula (TF, n = 20) or extensively hydrolysed formula (EHF, n = 6). The feed was changed to EHF (

The response to dietary treatment of patients with chronic post-infectious diarrhea and lactose intolerance.

The response to dietary treatment of patients with chronic post-infectious diarrhea and lactose intolerance was prospectively studied in 29 infants less than 1 year of age. All had gastroenteritis with diarrhea which persisted for more than 3 weeks. In the hospital, diarrhea continued and lactose intolerance was documented while being fed half-strength cow's milk formula. They were given dietary treatment with one of three formulas used for treatment of diarrhea in infancy. Improvement of diarrhea was more frequently achieved with Pregestimil when given as the initial therapy than with the oth

New percentiles of gamma-glutamyl transferase serum levels in infants and the role of breastfeeding.

BACKGROUND: Normal gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) values in infant serum remain poorly defined. Establishing accurate reference ranges during infancy is essential for diagnosing hepatobiliary disorders such as biliary atresia and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis. To establish reference percentiles for GGT, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in infants, and assess influence of breastfeeding. METHODS: A retrospective, single-center, longitudinal study including 469 healthy infants was conducted. Liver function was tested from birth to 18 months,
