Essential Oils from Cameroonian Aromatic Plants as Effective Insecticides against Mosquitoes, Houseflies, and Moths.

Recently, spices have attracted the attention of scientists and agrochemical companies for their potential as insecticidal and acaricidal agents, and even as repellents to replace synthetic compounds that are labeled with detrimental impacts on environment and human and animal health. In this framework, the aim of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal potential of the essential oils (EOs) obtained from three Cameroonian aromatic plants, namely Monodora myristica (Gaertn.) Dunal, Xylopia aethiopica (Dunal) A. Rich., and Aframomum citratum (J. Pereira) K. Schum. They were produced by hydro

Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle-Based Co-Delivery of a Repellent and an Insecticide for Management of the Asian Citrus Psyllid.

The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) serves as the principal insect vector responsible for the transmission of citrus Huanglongbing (HLB). Consequently, the effective control of D. citri is of paramount importance for curbing the spread of this devastating disease. Fir essential oil (FEO) exhibits a potent repellent activity against D. citri; however, its practical application is severely constrained by a short duration of efficacy arising from its high volatility. Imidacloprid (Im) is a conventional insecticide widely used for D. citri management, and prolonging its residual activity r

Bioactivity of Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle Extracts on Wheat Germination and Rice Weevil Survival.

Invasive plant species are increasingly recognized not only as ecological threats but also as potential sources of bioactive compounds with agricultural applications. However, the combined allelopathic and insecticidal potential of Ailanthus altissima's different plant parts remains insufficiently explored. This study evaluated the bioactivity of different plant part (leaf, bark, and branch) extracts of A. altissima. Secondary metabolites were characterized by HPLC-DAD-MS, while ethanol extracts (0.5-5%) were tested on wheat (Triticum aestivum) seed germination, seedling growth, oxidative stat

Molecular Recognition of Odorant-Binding Proteins WmagOBP39280 and WmagOBP42531 to Wohlfahrtia magnifica Pheromones and Bactrian Camel Volatiles.

Wohlfahrtia magnifica, a worldwide pest, causes myiasis in many domestic animals. Its pheromones and volatiles from Bactrian camels were reported to attract or repel W. magnifica, but the molecular mechanisms are still unclear. A small protein in the insect olfactory system, called odorant binding protein (OBP), plays a crucial role in odor reception. In this study, two W. magnifica odorant-binding proteins (WmagOBPs) genes, WmagOBP42531 and WmagOBP39280, were cloned from the antennae of W. magnifica, and then expressed and purified by prokaryotic expression. Fluorescence binding assays demons

Cat Ownership and Rural Residence Are Associated with Lyme Disease Prevalence in the Northeastern United States.

Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne disease in the USA. Beyond its tick-borne nature, however, risk factors for LD are poorly understood. We used an online questionnaire to compare LD patients and non-LD counterparts and elucidate factors associated with LD. We investigated demographic, lifestyle, and household characteristics and use of prevention measures. Associations with LD were modeled using logistic regression, and average marginal effects were estimated. In total, 185 active or past LD patients and 139 non-patients participated. The majority of respondents were white (95%

Associations of Topics of Discussion on Twitter With Survey Measures of Attitudes, Knowledge, and Behaviors Related to Zika: Probabilistic Study in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Recent outbreaks of Zika virus around the world led to increased discussions about this issue on social media platforms such as Twitter. These discussions may provide useful information about attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors of the population regarding issues that are important for public policy. OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify the associations of the topics of discussions on Twitter and survey measures of Zika-related attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors, not solely based upon the volume of such discussions but by analyzing the content of conversations using probabilistic tech

Biological control of Anopheles darlingi, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus larvae using shrimps.

Mosquitoes can act as vectors of important diseases such as malaria, dengue, Zika virus, yellow fever, Chikungunya and Mayaro fever, in addition to filariasis. The use of insecticides, larvicides, bed nets and repellents, besides the use of drugs as chemoprevention and the treatment of the sick are currently the pillars of the control of these vectors. We studied the biological control against of Anopheles darlingi, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus larvae using shrimps of the species M. pantanalense, M. amazonicum, M. brasiliense and M. jelskii. Larvae of mosquitoes were collected from

Dislodgement effect of natural semiochemicals released by disturbed triatomines: a possible alternative monitoring tool.

The quick detection of domestic and peridomestic triatomines in their environments becomes difficult without the use of dislodgement substances that flush them out from their shelters. At present, tetramethrin 0.2% is being widely used in control programs. Although it is an efficient dislodging agent, its toxicity might affect the health of captured triatomines, of other insects and, to a lesser extent, of other animals, including humans. Here, we tested if semiochemicals released by disturbed adults of Triatoma infestans and/or Rhodnius prolixus can make larvae of the same species exit from t

West Nile virus infection: a pediatric perspective.

West Nile virus (WNV) infection recently became a major public health concern in the western hemisphere. This article describes recent information regarding previously unrecognized mechanisms of WNV transmission and reviews clinical manifestations of WNV infection, diagnostic tests, and prevention strategies from a pediatric perspective. WNV is transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes, but during the epidemic that spread across North America in 2002, transmission of WNV through blood transfusions and organ transplantation was described for the first time. Longitudinal evaluation of an educational intervention for preventing tick bites in an area with endemic lyme disease in Baltimore County, Maryland.

The authors attempted to determine whether a targeted educational intervention in an area with endemic Lyme disease could increase knowledge, positive attitudes, and reported behaviors related to tick bite prevention and consequently decrease tick bites, as measured by a biomarker of tick bites. Between April and September of 1999, 317 subjects in Baltimore County, Maryland, were randomized to receive either tick-related or general health-related educational materials bimonthly through the mail. At each of three clinic visits, participants completed a self-administered questionnaire and provid

Efficacy of the topical skin protectant in advanced development.

A topical skin protectant (TSP) (ICD 2289) is being developed to protect service members from exposure to chemical warfare agents (CWA). The TSP is designed for use on the skin at the overgarment closures and other vulnerable areas to enhance protection. The TSP, which is in phase II clinical studies, is a cream containing two chemically inert substances: perfluoroalkylpolyether and polytetrafluoroethylene. Animal data showed that the TSP was effective against percutaneous penetration of a blister agent, sulfur mustard (HD), by reducing the size of skin lesions and against T-2 mycotoxin by pre

Personal-protection measures against mosquitoes: a study of practices and costs in a district, in the Indian state of Orissa, where malaria and lymphatic filariasis are co-endemic.

In a study undertaken among rural and urban communities in a district of Orissa, India, the personal-protection measures used against mosquitoes, and the household costs of these measures, were investigated. Most people living in the study communities perceived mosquitoes as a problem, both as a biting nuisance and as vectors of human disease. Almost all (99%) of the urban households investigated and most (84%) of the rural each reported the use of at least one measure against mosquitoes. Most of the study households (92% of the urban and 64% of the rural) used a 'modern' chemical method (coil

Carvone-Rich Essential Oils and Their Agrobiological Interactions: A Review.

Carvone-rich essential oils (EOs), and carvone specifically, exhibit a broad spectrum of protective effects against major agricultural threats. They display strong antifungal and moderate antibacterial effects, effectively inhibiting numerous phytopathogenic fungi. EOs exhibit significant insecticidal, acaricidal, and repellent activity against various insects and mites, and some EOs are highly effective against agricultural nematodes, suppressing mobility and egg hatching. Crucially, the EOs demonstrate a strong capacity to suppress the germination and initial growth of different weed species

Positive Chemotaxis of the Entomopathogenic Nematode Steinernema australe (Panagrolaimorpha: Steinenematidae) towards High-Bush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) Root Volatiles.

The foraging behavior of the infective juveniles (IJs) of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) relies on host-derived compounds, but in a tri-trophic context, herbivore-induced root volatiles act as signals enhancing the biological control of insect pests by recruiting EPNs. In southern Chile, the EPN Steinernema australe exhibits the potential to control the raspberry weevil, Aegorhinus superciliosus, a key pest of blueberry Vaccinium corymbosum. However, there is no information on the quality of the blueberry root volatile plume or the S. australe response to these chemicals as putative attract

Azadirachtin acting as a hazardous compound to induce multiple detrimental effects in Drosophila melanogaster.

Azadirachtin, a tetranortriterpenoid botanical insecticide, has varied sub-lethal effects against many insect pests, including antifeedant, repellent, and growth regulatory. Despite extensive studies of the mechanisms that underline these physiological effects, little attention has been given to multiple toxic effects of azadirachtin under a coherent concentration, and there is no definitive overarching consensus on its toxicity. Here, we investigated multiple sub-lethal effects induced by 4 mg L-1 of azadirachtin, which did not elicit antifeedant behavior in Drosophila melanogaster, on metric
