Patient-reported outcome measures for emotional functioning in cancer patients: Content comparison of the EORTC CAT Core, FACT-G, HADS, SF-36, PRO-CTCAE, and PROMIS instruments.

BACKGROUND: Cancer and its treatment can have substantial impact on patients' emotional functioning. Several patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) assessing emotional functioning are available, but differences in content limit the comparability of results. To better understand conceptual (dis)similarities, we conducted a content comparison of commonly used PROMs. METHODS: We included emotional functioning items, scales, and item banks from the EORTC CAT Core, EORTC QLQ-C30, FACT-G, Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), SF-36, PRO-CTCAE, and PROMIS (item banks for anxiety, depressi

Rehabilitation pharmacotherapy: A scoping review.

Many patients in rehabilitation facilities are affected by polypharmacy. Polypharmacy is associated with rehabilitation outcomes and functional recovery. Consequently, a combination of rehabilitation and pharmacotherapy may improve the outcomes of older people undergoing rehabilitation. A recent report described the concept of rehabilitation pharmacotherapy. The concept envisages helping frail older people and people with disabilities to achieve the highest possible body function, activity level and quality of life. There are two key tenets of rehabilitation pharmacotherapy: "pharmacotherapy i

Prevalence and features of ICF-disability in Spain as captured by the 2008 National Disability Survey.

BACKGROUND: Since 1986, the study of disability in Spain has been mainly addressed by National Disability Surveys (NDSs). While international attempts to frame NDS designs within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) have progressed, in general, the ICF has hardly been used in either the NDS or epidemiological studies. This study sought to identify ICF Activity- and Participation-related content in the most recent Spanish NDS, the 2008 Survey on Disabilities, Independence and Dependency Situations (Encuesta sobre discapacidades, autonomía personal y situa…

Establishing content validity for a composite activities-specific risk of falls scale:linkage between fear of falling and physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling (FoF) and physical activity (PA) are important psychological and behavioral factors associated with falls. No instrument quantifies the link between these two factors to evaluate the risk of falls. We aimed to design a scale linking FoF with PA (Composite Activities-specific Risk of Falls Scale, CARFS) for people with various disability levels. METHODS: First, we designed a questionnaire comprising 40 balance-related activities from the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) for a pilot survey. Second, participants were interviewe

The effect of ankle-foot orthoses on self-reported balance confidence in persons with chronic poststroke hemiplegia.

BACKGROUND: One intervention often used to address physical impairments post stroke is an ankle-foot orthosis. Ankle-foot orthoses may improve walking speed, stride length, and gait pattern. However, effects on balance, crucial for safe ambulation, are thus far inconclusive. One aspect of balance shown to contribute to functional ability is self-efficacy. Self-efficacy, defined as the belief in one's ability to succeed in particular situations, has been shown to be more strongly associated with activity and participation (as defined by the International Classification of Functioning, Disabilit

The ICF Classification System to Assess Risk Factors for CVD in Secondary Prevention after Ischemic Stroke and Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

Background and objectives: Patients with a history of prior stroke have a high risk for subsequent cardiovascular events (CVD). Therefore, the implementation of an effective strategy to reduce risk factors and thereby improve secondary prevention outcomes is crucial in this patient population. The aim of this study was to determine differences in the incidence of risk factors for recurrent CVD events based on clinical type of prior stroke and to characterize them using the ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health) classification system. Materials and Methods: The…

Neighborhood walkability, physical activity, and walking for transportation: A cross-sectional study of older adults living on low income.

BACKGROUND: Walking, and in particular, outdoor walking, is the most common form of physical activity for older adults. To date, no study investigated the association between the neighborhood built environment and physical activity habits of older adults of low SES. Thus, our overarching aim was to examine the association between the neighborhood built environment and the spectrum of physical activity and walking for transportation in older adults of low socioeconomic status. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were from the Walk the Talk Study, collected in 2012. Participants (n = 161, mean age =

Cerebral palsy and aging.

Cerebral palsy (CP), the most common major disabling motor disorder of childhood, is frequently thought of as a condition that affects only children. Deaths in children with CP, never common, have in recent years become very rare, unless the child is very severely and multiply disabled. Thus, virtually all children assigned the diagnosis of CP will survive into adulthood. Attention to the adult with CP has been sparse, and the evolution of the motor disorder as the individual moves through adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, and old age is not well understood. Nor do we know what happens

Understanding the Experience of Age-Related Vestibular Loss in Older Individuals: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Inner ear balance (or vestibular) function declines with age and is associated with decreased mobility and an increased risk of falls in older individuals. We sought to understand the lived experience of older adults with vestibular loss in order to improve care in this population. METHODS: Qualitative data were derived from semi-structured interviews of individuals aged 65 years or older presenting to the Balance and Falls Prevention Clinic from February 1, 2014 to March 30, 2015 for evaluation of age-related vestibular loss. Transcripts were analyzed using interpretive phenomeno
