Transmission of Holocaust trauma--an integrative view.

Much has been written about how children of Holocaust survivors tend to absorb the psychological burdens of their parents. But questions remain regarding such parental transmission of Holocaust trauma. What was in fact passed on from parent to child? How does the transmission occur? Do parents invariably transmit and are children equally susceptible? The purpose of this article is to discuss these issues and present a model in which the process of trauma transmission can be understood more consistently. After a brief description of that which was transmitted, four prevalent theories of trauma

A social skills group for boys with Asperger's syndrome.

A social skills group was conducted for 8 boys aged 8 to 12 years on a weekly basis for 14 sessions. In this descriptive paper we discuss the planning for the group, the teaching techniques used, the actual group process and a subjective assessment of outcomes. Possible directions for future interventions are also presented.

[Group psychotherapy in patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia].

The one-year supportive group-psychotherapy (3 groups with 8-9 patients) was carried out once-weekly by two therapists in 26 patients who met the DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder and agoraphobia. Patients filled in various ratings at the beginning and at the end of the therapy and a visual analog scale before as well as after each session. Twelve months after the end of the group-therapy the Longitudinal Interval Follow-up Evaluation (LIFE) was carried out. During the group-psychotherapy panic sensations, anxiety, nervousness and fears as well as psychosocial disability decreased. Duratio

Agoraphobia: indications for the application of the multimodal behavioral conceptualization.

Agoraphobia, characterized as fear of going into public places, vehicles, shops, streets, and so forth, is a prevalent syndrome which permeates the patient's life. The efficacy of psychoanalytic, behavioral, and pharmacological treatments has been disappointing. The pervasive nature of agoraphobia dictates that its treatment is most efficacious when a combination of separate although interactive techniques is applied in concert. A multimodal behavioral conceptualization provides the vehicle for the systematic combined application of seemingly diverse individual approaches through monitoring an

Acceptability and feasibility of the Ushirikiano treatment model for Kenyan adolescents: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents in low- and middle-income countries experience high rates of common mental disorders (CMDs) but have limited access to adolescent-friendly, evidence-based care. While Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents (IPT-A) is effective, brief group IPT-A delivered through task-shifted, stepped-care has not been rigorously evaluated in Kenyan primary care. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial to examine the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary effectiveness of the Ushirikiano treatment model, a task-shifted, stepped-care approach combining a br…

Effects of Group Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy on Mood Symptoms and Suicide-Related Interpersonal Constructs in Patients With Bipolar Disorder: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the effects of Group Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) on suicide-related interpersonal constructs (perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness as proxy indicators of suicidal risk) and mood symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder. METHODS: In this quasi-experimental study, 36 patients with bipolar I or II disorder were recruited from psychiatric centres in Isfahan, Iran, and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 18) or a control group (n = 18). The experimental group received 12 weekly group sessions of Group IPSRT in additio

The Fate of Borderline Pathology in Dimensional Classification Systems: A Narrative Review.

Recent revisions of personality disorder (PD) classifications have moved from categorical diagnoses toward dimensional models, raising renewed questions about the nosological status and clinical utility of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This narrative review traces the development of the borderline construct from early descriptions of patients positioned between neurosis and psychosis, through its theoretical consolidation within the concept of borderline personality organization, to the operationalization of BPD in DSM-III and subsequent diagnostic revisions. A central section summari

Predominant polarity as a potential moderator of group CBT outcomes in bipolar disorder: an exploratory post-hoc analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and severe mood disorder, characterized by recurrent episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression. Adjacent to pharmacotherapy, positive evidence has been found for the benefit of adding cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family-focused therapy (FFT), interpersonal and social-rhythm therapy (IPSRT) and Group Psychoeducation for treating BD. OBJECTIVE: CBT is well established as a form of psychotherapy for bipolar disorders, although variables that may affect its results are still poorly studied. The present study aimed to investigate Predomina

Observer Ratings of Leader Empathy, Openness, and Perceptiveness: The Impact of Timing on Group Climate.

The current study explored observer rated leadership empathy, perceptiveness, and openness, session number, and their associations with group climate during a 12-week group therapy randomized controlled trial (RCT) to treat perfectionism. Seventy group members from ten psychodynamic-interpersonal psychotherapy groups completed the Group Climate Questionnaire at the third and ninth treatment sessions and trained observers rated the co-leaders' empathy, perceptiveness, and openness at the second and sixth treatment sessions. Higher combined leader perceptiveness was positively associated with gr…

Clinical Efficacy of Psychotherapeutic Interventions for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Analysis.

Background: This systematic review aggregates research on psychotherapeutic interventions for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents. PTSD in this demographic presents differently from adults, necessitating tailored therapeutic approaches. In children and adolescents, PTSD arises from exposure to severe danger, interpersonal violence, or abuse, leading to significant behavioral and emotional disturbances that jeopardize long-term development. The review focuses on describing PTSD within two age groups, children (6 to 12 years) and adolescents (12 to 18 years), while

Case Report: Nonverbal approaches in the treatment of a patient with fibromyalgia with anger rooted in adverse childhood experiences.

INTRODUCTION: In psychotherapy, it is important to establish and deepen a therapeutic trusting relationship, but patients who have experienced extreme adversity in childhood tend to have difficulty in building such a relationship. This paper reports a case of fibromyalgia with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in which a nonverbal approach was successful in building a trusting relationship. CASE AND METHODS: The patient is a woman in her late 40s. She had strong anger rooted in ACEs, including neglect by her father, a feeling of unfair parenting by her mother compared to her younger brothe

Interventions for perinatal borderline personality disorder and complex trauma: a systematic review.

Perinatal borderline personality disorder (BPD) and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) are associated with significant impairment to interpersonal functioning, and risk of intergenerational transmission of psychopathology. Evaluation of interventions, however, is scarce. To date, no systematic review has addressed interventions for perinatal BPD, cPTSD, and associated symptomatology. Given the modest evidence to support informed clinical guidelines, the objective of this systematic review is to synthesise the literature on interventions for perinatal BPD and cPTSD, and to generate

The impact of integrating emotion focused components into psychological therapy: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: This paper presents a randomized controlled trial on assimilative integration, which is aimed at integrating elements from other orientations within one approach to enrich its conceptual and practical repertoire. Elements from Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) were integrated into a form of cognitive behavior therapy: Psychological Therapy (PT). In one treatment condition, EFT was added to PT (+EFT) with the intent to enhance therapists' working with emotions. In the other condition, concepts and interventions based on the socialpsychological self-regulation approach were added to PT (

[DBT-PTSD-EA: treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder after interpersonal traumatization in childhood in adolescents with borderline personality disorders : A pilot study].

BACKGROUND: Recent meta-analyses have shown that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescents and young adults can be effectively treated; however, there is a lack of studies that investigated the efficacy of psychotherapy in the clinically important group of adolescents with PTSD related to childhood sexual and/or physical abuse and co-occurring symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was a first evaluation of the efficacy of a specifically developed trauma-focused treatment (DBT-PTSD-EA) for adolescent patients with PTSD and BPD symptoms af

Psychotherapies for comorbid anxiety in bipolar spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid anxiety disorders are highly prevalent in bipolar disorder and have been shown to have serious negative impacts on the course of illness. The pharmacological treatment of anxiety can interact with the bipolar disorder and has not been proven effective. As such, many have recommended the psychological treatment of anxiety. This paper reviews the literature on psychological treatments for anxiety comorbid to bipolar disorder. METHOD: The Medline, PsychInfo and Web of Science databases were thoroughly examined for relevant treatment studies. RESULTS: Despite frequent recomm
