BACKGROUND: The purpose of our study was to determine prospectively relationships between plasma mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid (mtDNA) concentration and clinical outcome in patients with intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) induced by severe abdominal trauma.

The pathogenic role of staphylococci in hospital-acquired postoperative intra-abdominal infections (HAIs) has never been evaluated. In a tertiary care university hospital, we assessed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients admitted to the intensive care unit for HAIs according to the presence of staphylococci (S-HAI) or their absence (nS-HAI) in peritoneal cultures. Patients with S-HAIs were compared to nS-HAIs patients. Overall, 380 patients were analyzed, including 87 (23%) S-HAI patients [29 Staphylococcus aureus (Sa-HAIs) and 58 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS-HAIs)].

We report two colorectal trauma patients whose rectosigmoid region was ruptured due to a jet of compressed air directed to their anus while they were playing practical jokes with their colleagues in their place of work. It was difficult to diagnose in one patient due to vague symptoms and signs and due to being stunned by a stroke of the compressed air. Both patients suffered from abdominal pain and distension, tension pneumoperitoneum and mild respiratory alkalosis. One patient was treated with primary two layer closure, and the other with primary two layer closure and sigmoid loop colostomy.

The influence of a single peroperative five-liter saline peritoneal lavage has been assessed in 21 consecutive patients undergoing elective operation for colorectal cancer. The aim of the study was to investigate whether reduction in bacterial counts by saline lavage would reduce the incidence of infection and thereby avoid the need for prophylactic antimicrobials.
