In recent years, the superior bioavailability and biological activity of astaxanthin Z-isomers have become evident, with their application being highly anticipated. Currently, thermal treatment remains the most commonly used method for inducing Z-isomerization in astaxanthin. However, this approach often requires the use of toxic solvents and catalysts to achieve efficient thermal isomerization. Here, we developed environmentally friendly processes for Z-isomerization of ester-form astaxanthin originated from Haematococcus lacustris utilizing the supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) extraction process.

The incidence of dextrocardia and its associated cardiac and noncardiac malformations is not known. There is inadequate information about outcomes to counsel parents about prognosis. A retrospective review of all diagnoses of dextrocardia due to embryologic development at a tertiary care hospital from 1985 to 2001 was performed. Eighty-one cases were identified (48 antenatally). In a series of more than 3500 pregnancies referred for fetal echocardiography, 29 cases of atrioventricular septal defect were detected in the fetus. We report a fetus with left isomerism, in whom the atrioventricular block progressed from low grade second degree to complete block and fetal hydrops. While it is known that there is a high incidence of heart block in the fetus with left isomerism, as far as we are aware, ours is the first report of Wenckebach type block documented in the fetus by Doppler echocardiography, and demonstration of the progression of heart block during fetus life in the setting of left isomerism.
