In March 2012, two patients were transported urgently to the hospital in Tottori Prefecture, Japan, because of symptoms suggestive of botulism. Botulinum neurotoxin type A was detected in the clinical specimens and the food consumed by the two patients (vacuum packed adzuki-batto, a sweet adzuki bean soup containing noodles). We were able to make a prompt diagnosis of food botulism associated with the consumption of adzuki-batto, from which the causative pathogen Clostridium botulinum Ab was cultured.

METHODS: The live infants born at 37 to 41 weeks of gestation were enrolled in this study. Cases with diabetic pregnancy, preeclampsia, an anomalous fetus, and a fetus with chromosomal abnormalities were excluded. Idiopathic abnormal bodily sensations, or cenesthesic symptoms, are exhibited in a wide variety of mental illnesses. In Japan, patients with abnormal bodily sensations are often diagnosed with cenesthopathy. This study reviewed recent case reports of cenesthopathy. Of the 100 identified cases, young patients were more commonly men with predominant bodily cenesthesic symptoms, while older patients (≥40 years) were more commonly women with cenesthesic symptoms restricted to the oral cavity (oral cenesthopathy).

In Japan, prion diseases are classified into 76.6％ with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), 19.6％ with genetic prion diseases, and 4.9％ with acquired prion disease. Carotid artery stenting (CAS) was approved by the government and reimbursement was started in 2008 in Japan, probably the last country in the world. CASCARD is a retrospective registry study performed by cardiologists to assess initial results of CAS in Japan.
