In medical fitness examinations of commercial pilots, extensive vestibular investigations should be conducted. In particular, the pendular test, as a weak rotational stimulation method, can disclose central vestibular disorders. Thus, the central nystagmus tracing can be considered as a sign of irritation of vestibular centers, most frequently as a consequence of head trauma, a finding that may influence the decision in the enlistment of the pilot. Cochleo-vestibular dysfunction of patients suffering from a heredo-ataxia, have been frequently described. A family and a single case are presented, which show the association of a heredo-ataxia, more specifically the Roussy-Lévy syndrome, progressive sensorineural loss, nystagmus and vestibular a- or hyporeflexia. A review of the literature is included and the standpoints concerning the nosological entities are discussed.

It is well known that sensorineural hearing loss rarely occurs after middle ear surgery. Five cases of postoperative sensorineural hearing loss were reviewed. These operations amounted to 0.9% of all middle ear operations in which the first author was involved. The causes of hearing loss were believed to be labyrinthitis through the fistula in cholesteatoma case 1, and acoustic trauma from the bone-cutting burr in cases 2 and 3. We investigated galvanic body sway of ten healthy adults and eight patients by using the averaging program for measuring T1 and T2, which were latencies at the onset and at the cutoff of galvanic stimulation, respectively, and the plotting program, which adopted 1.73 sec as T1 and 0.39 sec as T2, for calculating the coordinates of the body's sway center. A temporal bone specimen demonstrating endolymphatic hydrops 13 years after fenestration of the lateral semicircular canal is presented. Symptomatological and clinical aspects are also discussed in the light of the physiopathological mechanisms of vestibular compensation. In a group of patients with unilateral labyrinthine dysfunction, the maximal velocity of the slow component response to caloric stimulation was compared with that to horizontal vestibular rotatory stimulation by a low-frequency stimulus.
