Oral helminthic infestations.

Oral infections caused by helminths (worms) are rarely encountered in clinical practice, and consequently, there is a paucity of information in the medical and dental literature about these conditions. In the present article, we review the English literature related to oral helminthic infestations. The main oral infections caused by helminths include four roundworm (trichinosis, trichuriasis, filariasis, and larva migrans) and three tapeworm infections (cysticercosis, sparganosis, and echinococcosis). Cases are mainly encountered in endemic areas and mainly present a benign clinical picture. T…

[Vacation and tropical dermatoses].

Besides fever and diarrhea, skin diseases are the third most common cause of morbidity in returning travelers after a stay in a tropical country. Approximately one- quarter of these dermatological symptoms can be referred to a classical tropical disease. The majority are of infectious origin. Often only the clinical appearance leads to the diagnosis of a tropical disease as myiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, tungiasis or cutaneous leishmaniasis. Not infrequently the dermatological symptoms lead to the diagnosis of a primarily systemic tropical disease. For example, an eschar with or without a r…

[Toxocariasis in an adult manifested as hypereosinophilic syndrome with predominant neurological involvement. Clinical case].

Hypereosinophilic syndrome is characterized by persistent hypereosinophilia and signs or symptoms due to organ involvement, specially nervous system, heart and skin. It can be primary or secondary to allergies, parasites or cancer. Toxocariasis is an uncommon parasitic disease in adults. There is a variant, called visceral larva migrans, that can involve different organs, and among those, the central nervous system. We report a 61 years old male, with a cerebrovascular disease. There were focalizing symptoms, the CAT scan showed multiple ischemic lesions and a peripheral eosinophilia of 12,152…

Experimental Toxocara canis infection in cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis).

Visceral larva migrans was produced in 16 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) experimentally inoculated with 45,000 embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis as a single bolus or in 3 divided doses. The hematologic and serologic changes were similar to those observed in children with visceral Toxocara infection. Neurologic signs developed in 3 animals and were characterized by ataxia and nystagmus. Growth rates were diminished in inoculated animals when compared with the rates in noninoculated controls. Diagnostic antibody titers as measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were noted in al…

Toxocara: Protecting pets and improving the lives of people.

Toxocara sp. are zoonotic parasitic roundworms that cause infection and morbidity in both developed and developing countries. In humans, infection is thought to be most common in children, particularly those living in poverty, and usually results from consumption of soil contaminated with parasite eggs deposited by dog or cat faeces. Infection in humans results in different clinical manifestations, some more overt like visceral or ocular larva migrans and others more cryptic like neurocognitive delay. Despite its pervasiveness, toxocariasis has become a neglected infection. We review the dynam…

Toxocariasis: a serological survey of blood donors in the Australian Capital Territory together with observations on the risks of infection.

The sera from 660 healthy blood donors from Canberra were tested for antibodies to Toxocara canis by the ELISA test. The results were compared with those from patients with suspected or confirmed visceral larva migrans or ocular toxocariasis. Over 7% of Canberra sera showed elevated levels of antibody reacting with T. canis antigen. Sera from patients resident in Australia with other helminth parasites did not cross-react with T. canis antigen in our tests. However, studies of sera collected in several tropical countries with other parasitic infection, show that cross-reactions with other para…

Short communication: Experimental toxocarosis in Chinese Kun Ming mice: Dose-dependent larval distribution and modulation of immune responses.

Toxocarosis is an important parasitic zoonosis which is mainly caused by the infective larvae of Toxocara canis. To identify whether there are correlations among the infectious dose, the larval migrans and immune modulation in inbred Chinese Kun Ming (KM) mice, experimental infections were carried out with a range of dosages of 100, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 embryonated eggs (EE). Pathogenic reactions were observed in terms of physical and central nervous symptoms. Distributions of T. canis larvae in liver, lung, kidney, heart and brain organs were respectively detected by scanning tissue sect

Gnathostomiasis, another emerging imported disease.

Gnathostomiasis is a food-borne zoonosis caused by the late-third stage larvae of Gnathostoma spp. It is being seen with increasing frequenc … l exposure. Infection results in initial nonspecific symptoms followed by cutaneous and/or visceral larva migrans, with the latter carrying high morbidity and mortality rates if there is central nervous system involvement. We review the literature and describe the epidemiology, life cycle, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gnathostomias …

Experimental toxocariasis and hyperactivity in mice.

An observational study using videorecordings and computer-assisted data analysis was undertaken in order to investigate the behaviour of mice infected with larvae of Toxocara canis. The findings indicated that the infection had a marked effect on five readily and reliably differentiable categories of murine behaviour. A marked increase in the number of shorter bouts of each of the five behaviours was also associated with the infection. These results support previous findings and further suggest that T. canis infection affects the way in which mice respond to their environment. In particular th

Larva Migration and Eosinophilia in Mice Experimentally Infected With Gnathostoma spinigerum.

BACKGROUND: Gnathostoma spinigerum causes larva migran in human which is endemic in Southeast Asia. Information regarding larva migration is limited. In this study, we investigated the parasite migration by recovery of worms from the whole body of mouse after oral infection with advanced third stage larvae (AL3). The percentage of blood eosinophils was examined in parallel. METHODS: Mice were orally infected with AL3 and histological study of organs was investigated in order to study the migration of AL3, along with blood eosinophilia. RESULTS: At 1 hr post infection (PI), the larvae remaine

Larval migration of Toxocara canis in piglets and transfer of larvae from infected porcine tissue to mice.

Visceral larva migrans (VLM), caused by Toxocara canis larvae in humans, animals and birds, is now well documented throughout the world. Seven piglets were infected orally with 5 x 104 embryonated eggs and the migration and distribution of T. canis larvae in the tissues were evaluated. After artificial gastric juice digestion, larval yields at necropsy from different organs and muscles on days 1, 3, 7, 15 and 30 post-infection (DPI) revealed 3.05, 0.97, 0.21, 0.13, 0.05, 0.14% recovery from liver, lungs, heart, kidneys, skeletal muscles and brain tissues respectively, with a total of 2486 (4.9…

A serological study of human toxocariasis in north India.

BACKGROUND: Human toxocariasis owing to lodgement of the larvae of Toxocara canis in different organs can result in serious clinical syndromes such as visceral larva migrans or ocular larva migrans. Detection of an antibody response to Toxocara canis excretory-secretory (TES) antigen in serum samples is sensitive and specific for diagnosis and epidemiological surveys. To assess the extent of this problem in northern India, we tested the antibody response to the TES antigen by ELISA technique in subjects residing in a rural area near Chandigarh and in patients attending Nehru hospital, Chandiga…

[Toxocara spp. and other helminths in squares and parks of Ciudad Bolívar, Bolivar State (Venezuela)].

INTRODUCTION: Visceral larva migrans, a syndrome observed in humans, is caused by larva of parasitic helminths, such as Toxocara spp., which usually infect dogs and cats. Among the risk factors involved in the incidence of this syndrome, the size of these animal populations is particularly important. Ciudad Bolívar (Bolivar State, Venezuela) is a city with a large dog population. This fact has led to an effort to determine of prevalence of eggs from Toxocara spp. and other helminths in public squares and parks in this city. METHODS: Twenty-five squares and parks were selected from five areas …
