Lead-induced cell proliferation and organ-specific tumorigenicity.

While lead acetate is a renal carcinogen in rodent studies, the mechanism by which it induces cancer has not been established. This report proposes that the enhanced susceptibility of renal tubular epithelial cells to lead-induced mitogenicity at the levels comparable to those administered in the cancer bioassay may contribute to the carcinogenic response seen in this target organ. Of relevance is that the nonresponsiveness of the liver to lead-induced carcinogenicity was associated with significantly less capacity (i.e., 675-fold) of lead to induce the mitogenic response in the rodent liver.

[Early tubular involvements in lead poisoning in children].

One of the main targets of lead poisoning is the kidney. Chronic poisoning can lead to kidney failure, and acute poisoning to tubulopathy with Toni-Debré-Fanconi syndrome. The primum movens of this tubulopathy is a distortion of mitochondrial energetic metabolism. We studied 27 children presenting with non symptomatic poisoning. Serum creatinine levels were normal. There was neither proteinuria nor glycosuria and only one child presented with hyperaminoaciduria. One third already presented with signs of tubulopathy, as shown by an increase in beta 2 microglobinuria in 36.5% of the cases studie…

Blood lead levels in children of S.W. Sardinia.

The purpose of the present study was to make a preliminary evaluation of blood lead levels in school-aged children from three towns of southwestern Sardinia, Portoscuso, S. Antioco and Calasetta, the first of which is very close to a large industrial complex. Blood lead concentration was determined in venous blood samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The survey revealed that children residing in the town of Portoscuso had higher mean blood lead levels (12.7 micrograms/dl) than children of the same age residing in S. Antioco and Calasetta (8.3 and 8.4 micrograms/dl r…

Lead poisoning in a West Bank Arab Village.

Eleven patients from the West Bank village of Es-Sawiyeh were admitted with lead poisoning to two Jerusalem hospitals between November 1982 and January 1983. They all belonged to several households of a single large family. Colicky abdominal pains were present in five patients, weakness in four, behavioral changes ranging from irritability to frank psychosis in four, and paralysis in one. Anemia of various degrees was seen in all patients. Basophilic stippling and reticulocytosis were encountered in all patients with moderate to severe anemia. Therapy with edetate disodium calcium and penicill…

"Crown of thorns" single pass lead--clinical results.

Twenty-four patients have been treated for periods of up to two years (mean 14 months) with this single pass electrode for physiological pacing. Manufacturing refinements now allow percutaneous insertion into the subclavian vein. Pacing thresholds and sensing signals from both atrium and ventricle have remained satisfactory for a wide variety of different physiological pacemakers. No complications specifically related to the lead have occurred in a total of 277 patient months. We conclude that this single pass electrode is suitable for long-term implantation and can provide physiological pacin…

Contribution of lead to hypertension with renal impairment.

Hypertension of unknown cause is generally termed "essential." Because hypertension has long been considered a possible complication of lead poisoning and the EDTA lead-mobilization test has proved to be a sensitive indicator of excessive body stores of lead, we used this test to evaluate cumulative past lead absorption in 48 men diagnosed as having essential hypertension. Patients who had hypertension with reduced renal function (i.e., serum creatinine level greater than 1.5 mg per deciliter [133 mumols per liter]) had significantly larger amounts of mobilizable lead than did patients who had…

Ocular trauma from lead-acid vehicle battery explosions.

Ocular trauma caused by lead-acid car battery explosions has been seen in a number of cases presenting to the major teaching hospitals in Adelaide. Injuries range from superficial acid burns to penetrating eye injury and retinal haemorrhage. The cause of the explosions has been ignition of the hydrogen-oxygen gas mixture generated by lead-acid batteries. The risk of explosion is known to battery manufacturing and distributing bodies and methods of avoiding explosions are well known to the industry. It is suggested that efforts should be made to design safe car batteries, and that there is an u…

Reassessment of the microcytic anemia of lead poisoning.

Hematologic abnormalities in childhood lead poisoning may be due, in part, to the presence of other disorders, such as iron deficiency or thalassemia minor. In order to reassess increased lead burden as a cause of microcytic anemia, we studied 58 children with class III or IV lead poisoning, normal iron stores, and no inherited hemoglobinopathy. Anemia occurred in 12% and microcytosis in 21% of these children. The combination of anemia and microcytosis was found in only one of 58 patients (2%). When only children with class IV lead poisoning were studied, the occurrence of microcytosis increas…

An integrative index of biological effects of lead.

Biological indicators of lead effects on the central nervous system (as measured by performance tests), hematogenous bone marrow (hemoglobin levels) and kidney function (BUN Levels) can be combined in an integrative index (INDEX). This integrative index can be in turn related to indicators of lead exposure and absorption. Such an index was calculated by removing age effects in measures of performance and kidney function and then transforming all the variables to Z (standard) units. Secondary lead smelter workers and a control group were studied. In secondary lead smelter workers this INDEX was…

Anemia of lead intoxication: a role for copper.

Lead-induced anemia in rats, which is of a microcytic, hypochromic type, has been shown to be a result of an interference with the metabolism of copper and iron. In this complex interaction, copper may be the target upon which ingested lead has its antagonistic effect on hematopoiesis. The depressions in hematocrit and hemoglobin levels resulting from exposure to lead may occur secondarily to the effects of a lead-induced copper deficiency on iron mobilization and utilization. The metabolic fault induced by lead is seen in a reduction of serum iron, elevation of serum iron binding capacity, an…

Ecotoxicological effects of lead in ducks and geese.

Lead (Pb) exposure remains a critical threat to waterfowl health and conservation. This review synthesizes findings from studies published between 2015 and 2025 on Pb toxicity in geese and ducks across North America, Europe, and Asia. Ingestion of spent ammunition and Pb-contaminated sediments were identified as the predominant exposure pathways. Species-specific susceptibility was evident, with diving ducks and some geese showing higher rates of Pb shot ingestion, although all waterfowl are at risk. Acute toxicity manifested as direct mortality, emaciation, neurological disorders, and organ n…

Assessing Lead Levels in New York-Donated Venison.

Lead (Pb) hunting ammunition is known to fragment in target animals and result in Pb particles with small surface areas, which increase bioavailability and make detection more difficult. Dietary exposure to Pb presents significant human health risks to vulnerable groups, especially children and pregnant women. Each year, 34 tons of venison are donated to New York State food banks and pantries without oversight of the potential for Pb contamination. A project was launched in 2022 to sample donated venison and to determine if and at what concentration this meat might be contaminated with Pb. Tes…

Cubic Cesium Lead Bromide Stabilized by Ethylammonium Incorporation.

Lead halide perovskites are widely studied as semiconductors for optoelectronic applications, in particular, for solar cells and room temperature radiation detectors. Although many lead halide perovskite compounds exhibit excellent properties, achieving their optimal performance is hindered by structural distortion from an ideal cubic to orthorhombic or monoclinic symmetries. To address this issue and stabilize the cubic structure in CsPbBr3, we employed ethylammonium cation to form a series of Csx(EtNH3)1-xPbBr3 solid solutions. We found that, unlike the widely utilized formamidinium CH(NH2)2…

Lead poisoning and its effects on bone density.

Lead poisoning is a significant health concern, impacting multiple organs in the body, including the musculoskeletal system. While some studies suggest a link between lead exposure and reduced Bone Mineral Density (BMD), others report no significant relationship. This study aims to address this research gap by comparing the prevalence of osteoporosis and BMD in patients with lead poisoning to that of healthy individuals. In this study, 35 lead poisoning patients admitted to the poisoning departments of Valiasr Hospital in Birjand and Imam Reza Hospital in Mashhad were compared with 35 age- and…
