Magnetic resonance imaging reveals edema-like changes not only subcutaneously, but also in muscle tissue after femoropopliteal bypass surgery.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiological mechanisms that induce postrevascularization edema after femoropopliteal bypass surgery are not completely understood. Reperfusion-associated injury to revascularized tissue and damage to lymphatic structures are both likely to play a role. Aim of this study was to study edema formation after peripheral bypass surgery with magnetic resonance imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine patients suffering from severe peripheral arterial occlusive disease were subjected to magnetic resonance imaging scans before and 1 week after autologous femoropopliteal or femorocru

Exploring pre-impact landing kinematics associated with increase and decrease in the anterior cruciate ligament injury risk.

This study aimed to explore the single-legged landing kinematics that could lead to increase or decrease in the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Immediate pre-impact kinematics at the single-legged landing from 33 healthy young female handball players were evaluated. Thereafter, two-year follow-up for ACL injury incidence was conducted, in which six new ACL injuries in non-dominant leg were registered. The evaluation of pre-impact kinematics across participants was performed first by the principal component analysis to decompose them into the kinematic components (KCs), and the

Hamstring activation deficits in different jumping directions in athletes with a history of hamstring strain injuries: a cross-sectional laboratory study.

This study aimed to investigate the hamstring onset time and recruitment level during jumping tasks in athletes with chronic hamstring strain injuries. Thirteen hamstring injured athletes and thirteen matched healthy athletes were recruited. Activation onset time and muscle recruitment (median frequency of the EMG) of the lateral hamstring (LH) and medial hamstring (MH) was measured during double leg jumps in vertical and horizontal directions on the force platforms. The peak vertical ground reaction force and loading rate were obtained for all jumps. The injured group showed a delayed onset t

An innovative sit-standing seat in urban buses: A new design to prevent falls and non-collision injuries.

BACKGROUND: Due to the rapid growth of metropolises and the insufficiency of public transportation, nowadays, many people travel on these vehicles in a standing position. This position leads to discomfort and the risk of falling or non-collision incidents for the passengers. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to analyze an innovative sit-standing seat to prevent falls and non-collision injuries in standing passengers. METHODS: A total of sixteen participated in this study. EMG signal and Borg scale were used to assess muscle activity and discomfort, respectively. RESULTS: The mean B

Traumatic tibia shaft fractures caused by the impact of a golf ball: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: As golf becomes increasingly popular, the number of injuries while playing golf also increases. We experienced two cases of traumatic tibia shaft fractures caused by the impact of a golf ball. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old Korean man and a 43-year-old Korean man were diagnosed as having linear tibia shaft fractures on the right leg and left leg, respectively. Both of them were treated with closed intramedullary nails. Calculated impact power of the golf ball at the time of tibia fracture was 3372 and 5825 N, respectively. Radiologic and clinical complications such as nonunion a

Local fasciocutaneous flap skin coverage for the dorsal foot and ankle.

Recalcitrant wounds of the distal leg and foot are notorious for requiring complex solutions even when deceptively small or benign in appearance. The simplicity of local flap options is always preferable, but is limited about the dorsal foot and ankle region. Inclusion of the well-defined deep fascia with the overlying integument in this area permits creation of local fasciocutaneous flaps that may be an important viable alternative. Over the past 6 years, 13 patients have had 15 such fasciocutaneous flaps for ankle or dorsal foot soft tissue reconstruction, with vascular ischemia being the mo

Load-Leg Supports as a Biomechanical Intervention in Rear-Facing Child Restraint Misuse.

This study evaluated the biomechanical effectiveness of anti-rotation load-leg support in rear-facing child restraint systems (CRSs) under proper and improper (misuse) installation conditions. We conducted eight FMVSS 213 sled tests using a CRABI 12-month anthropomorphic test device under four installation configurations-proper installation, loose seat, loose harness, and both loose seat and loose harness-with and without the load-leg support. The use of the load leg reduced head and neck injury metrics in all installation conditions: mean HIC36 decreased from 682 to 571 (by 16%) and AIS≥4 hea

[Lymphatic outflow scintigraphy in a case of artificial edema of the lower limb].

The case of a young woman is reported who after injury to the left leg was three times hospitalized for diagnosing the cause of her lower limb edema. It took two months to verify its artificial origin. Scintigraphy showed an intensive acceleration of the lymphatic outflow from the left leg.

Lower extremity replantation-two and a half-year follow-up.

Successful replantation of the lower extremity at the above-knee level in an 11-year-old girl is reported with a two and a half-year follow-up. The patient has nerve regeneration and protective sensation to her foot. She is fully ambulatory and uses a brace to stabilize her ankle with a 51/2 cm lift on her shoe. Scanograms have revealed a growth of the severed extremity and the initial 10 cm discrepancy between the two legs is now approximately 51/2 cm. Lower extremity replantation is advocated in children and young adults where nerve regeneration is probable. Short ischemia time, probably les

Effects of early sports specialization on landing and balance ability in female college basketball players.

OBJECTIVES: Early specialization in a single sport from childhood is associated with an increased risk for acute and overuse injuries. Conversely, experience in multiple sports may be associated with improved neuromuscular control and performance. Currently, early sports specialization remains poorly researched in Japan. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the relationship between early sports specialization and landing and balance ability in Japan. METHODS: Thirty-eight female college basketball players were included and divided into the early specialization and nonspecialization groups.

Surgical techniques for conserving tissue and function in lower-limb amputation for trauma, infection, and vascular disease.

Certain factors regarding amputation level, such as the level of traumatic amputation, the position of a malignant tumor in a limb, or the level to which gangrene has progressed, cannot be changed. More important, in this regard, is the attitude of the surgeon toward amputation. This attitude determines the care with which the final level is selected, the manner in which the amputation is performed, and the way in which postoperative management, including prosthetic care, is handled. To achieve the desired long-term result for the amputee, the surgeon should view amputation as a reconstructive
