Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava posing as an adrenal incidentaloma.

Adrenal incidentalomas are incidentally detected adrenal lesions on imaging, which have a variety of differential diagnoses, the most common … the posterior wall of IVC, which was primarily repaired. Her postoperative biopsy was suggestive of leiomyosarcoma arising from the IVC. In the absence of distant metastasis, the sole prognostic factor for this tumour is achieving negative margins through radical resection of the tumour with IVC resection. Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcomas should be considered as …

Scrotal wall leiomyosarcoma: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Up to 30% of all scrotal masses are sarcomas. Leiomyosarcoma of the scrotal wall is rare, and its clinical significance and prognosis have not been well defined, since the most reported cases have little or no follow-up. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 45-year-old Caucasian man who was admitted with a firm, nontender, mobile scrotal wall mass from 15 months ago. Laboratory data including testicular tumor markers were within normal range, and transscrotal ultrasonography revealed an oval-shaped, hypoechogenic, solid mass with blood flow and well-defined border. Histopathologic exami…

A Rare Case of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma with Metastasis to the Thyroid Gland.

Uterine leiomyosarcomas are aggressive tumors associated with a poor prognosis. These neoplasms have high metastatic potential, more frequently affecting the lungs, liver, and peritoneum. There are very few cases of metastasis to the thyroid described in the literature. We present the case of a 47-year-old female diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma metastatic to the thyroid gland. In this case report, we want to emphasize the utility of ancillary studies to help differentiate a leiomyosarcoma from anaplastic thyroid carcinoma since cytologic evaluation alone can be challenging.

Large surgically resected leiomyosarcoma of the liver: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma (PHL) is an extremely rare type of tumor. We herein report a case of a large surgically resected leiomyosarcoma of the liver. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old man with a feeling of epigastric compression was referred for examination of an abdominal mass. He had no history of liver disease or alcohol abuse. Liver function tests indicated Child-Pugh class A. Tumor markers were negative. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a relatively well-contrasted 12 × 11 × 8 cm tumor with well-defined boundary replacing the latera…

The Adaptive and Innate Immune Cell Landscape of Uterine Leiomyosarcomas.

Reactivation of the anti-tumor response has shown substantial progress in aggressive tumors such as melanoma and lung cancer. Data on less common histotypes are scanty. Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy has been applied to few cases of uterine leiomyosarcomas, of which the immune cell composition was not examined in detail. We analyzed the inflammatory infiltrate of 21 such cases in high-dimensional, single cell phenotyping on routinely processed tissue. T-lymphoid cells displayed a composite phenotype common to all tumors, suggestive of antigen-exposure, acute and chronic exhaustion. To the…

Leiomyosarcoma of the renal pelvis diagnosed by percutaneous endoscopic resection.

We present a case of leiomyosarcoma arising from the renal pelvis, which is a rare clinical entity. A percutaneous endoscopic resection led to the final histopathological diagnosis. The patient underwent radical nephrectomy and did not receive adjuvant therapy. Based on follow-up CT scans, he remains recurrence-free one year after surgery.

Robotic resection of a giant retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma: A case report.

The management of abdominal leiomyosarcoma is challenging. Surgical excision is considered the only effective treatment; however, this is associated with considerable morbidity. Robotic surgery has emerged during the past decades and has enhanced the general surgery armamentarium, allowing surgeons to carry out demanding operations in a safe manner. The surgical resection of retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma (RPLM) can be associated with significant morbidity, which is primarily due to the origin or the close proximity of the tumor with important vascular structures, including the inferior vena c…

Leiomyosarcoma of the spermatic cord: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma of the spermatic cord is a rare entity. It presents as a firm and painless intrascrotal mass. For diagnosis radiological methods such as ultrasound, CT or MRI are necessary. Radical orchiectomy is the gold standard of treatment. CASE DESCRIPTION: We reported a one case of a 66-year-old man that he has suffered from a painless hard mass in the right hemiscrotum since three years. Ultrasound revealed a paratesticular mass. Further workup revealed no distant metastasis before surgery. Right radical orchiectomy was performed, the final pathologic examination showed a le…

[Leiomyosarcoma of the foreskin : A rare case of mesenchymal foreskin tumor].

We report a case of a rare mesenchymal foreskin tumor. A slow-growing node was detected during the urological examination of a 39-year-old man. A histological examination following the node excision showed a superficial leiomyosarcoma. Superficial leiomyosarcomas rarely metastasize and are associated with a better prognosis than deeper tumors. The patient had no relapse 9 months after a successful radical circumcision. We strongly recommend a histological examination whenever a growing node in the genital area is found.

Occult Leiomyosarcomas in a Canadian Province: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: The risk of unexpected uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) following surgery for presumed benign leiomyoma is quoted to be between 1 in 498 and 1 in 5000. The objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence of uterine LMS in a specific patient population and the rate of diagnosis of occult uterine LMS and to evaluate the risk of unintended morcellation of LMS in Saskatchewan. METHODS: This study was a Canadian Task Force Classification II-2 multicentre retrospective cohort study in academic-affiliated tertiary care centres. All women with the histopathologic diagnosis of …

Primary Hepatic Leiomyosarcoma: a Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare type of liver sarcoma with relatively poor prognosis, with about 50 cases having been reported in the literature. Potential origins of this tumor in the liver are the smooth muscle cells in the round ligament, intrahepatic blood vessels and intrahepatic bile ducts. There is no apparent sex predilection and there is a wide age range. The clinical presentation is not specific and the diagnosis depends on the expression of markers such as smooth muscle actin, desmin and vimentin by tumor cells. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Herein, we p…

Pulmonary Embolism Caused by Intravenous Leiomyosarcoma of the Lower Limb.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is usually caused by thrombosis or tumor. We report the long-term survival of a patient with PE due to a leiomyosarcoma in the deep vein. A 71-year-old woman complained of dyspnea and swelling of the left lower limb. Computed tomography revealed filling defects in the pulmonary arteries and deep vein. She was diagnosed with PE caused by venous thrombosis and treated with anticoagulant therapy. Her symptoms were prolonged, and D-dimer tests remained negative. Biopsy of the substance in the deep vein revealed leiomyosarcoma. The possibility of PE caused by extravascular o…

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the spine: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Primary leiomyosarcoma of the bone was firstly reported by Evans and Sanerkin in 1965, whereas primary leiomyosarcoma of the vertebra is extremely rare. Because of the rarity of primary vertebral leiomyosarcoma, the diagnosis, treatment, and clinical outcome still remain controversial. Here we report a special case of primary leiomyosarcoma in the thoracic vertebra. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old female patient was admitted to our institution with the chief complaint of persistent back pain for 4 weeks. She had no symptoms of numbness, weakness, pain, and abnormal sensation in her…

Myxoid leiomyosarcoma of the uterus: a case report and review of the literature.

A para 1, 52-year-old female was admitted with complaints of irregular vaginal bleeding for the previous six months. Ultrasonography revealed a 4x6-cm tumor extending into the uterine cavity and cervical canal. On vaginal examination, a 2x2-cm tumor protruding from the cervical os was found, and an enlarged uterus was palpated. Vaginal intrauterine tumor resection was performed, and the patient was diagnosed with uterine myxoid leiomyosarcoma. A total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed, followed by postoperative chemotherapy. Twenty-one months after surge…

Molecular subtypes of uterine leiomyosarcoma and correlation with clinical outcome.

The molecular etiology of uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS) is poorly understood, which accounts for the wide disparity in outcomes among women with this disease. We examined and compared the molecular profiles of ULMS and normal myometrium (NL) to identify clinically relevant molecular subtypes. Discovery cases included 29 NL and 23 ULMS specimens. RNA was hybridized to Affymetrix U133A 2.0 transcription microarrays. Differentially expressed genes and pathways were identified using standard methods. Fourteen NL and 44 ULMS independent archival samples were used for external validation. Molecular …

Polypoid leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus treated by endoscopic submucosal dissection.

We report a rare case of polypoid leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus that was treated by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). A 63-year-old man with complaints of progressive dysphagia was referred to Hyogo Cancer Center for treatment of esophageal tumor. Esophagoscopy revealed a polypoid tumor 25 mm in diameter on the left side of the upper esophagus. Despite several biopsy specimens, the diagnosis could not be confirmed. Computed tomography showed a protruded, homogeneously enhancing mass in the upper esophagus, but no lymph node enlargement or metastasis. After 1.5 months, the esophagogram …

High Grade Leiomyosarcoma Mimicking a Recurrent Angiomyxoma in the Perineum.

Perineal leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare and aggressive cancer with a high metastatic potential and no defined standard treatment. There are only a few (six) reported cases in the literature. We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with a perineal leiomyosarcoma arising at the same site of a previously resected superficial angiomyxoma. Initially, she was treated for a presumptive recurrence of angiomyxoma. As she did not respond to medical therapy, she underwent repeat surgical excision. Pathology revealed a high grade leiomyosarcoma, histologically strikingly distinct from the initial d…

Uterine leiomyosarcoma: report of three cases and review of the literature.

This is the report of three cases of unsuspected uterine leiomyosarcoma diagnosed by pathologist after hysteroscopic resection. The literature on this issue has been reviewed. Mesenchymal uterine tumors are rare malignancies, occurring in only 17 per one million women annually. The three most common variants of uterine sarcoma are endometrial stromal sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, and malignant mixed Müllerian tumour. Less than one percent of women believed to have a leiomyoma actually have a sarcoma at hysterectomy. According to the authors' experience and the available literature reviewed, the rem…
