[A severe anaphylactic shock caused by spraying the oak processionary caterpillar (Thaumetopoea processionea) in North Brabant].

The processionary caterpillar, Thaumetopoea processionea, caused much inconvenience in the Netherlands in 1996-1997; from the medical point of view, mostly itching and skin rash. After contact with stinging bristles of the caterpillar and with the pesticide Dimilin SC-48, of which diflubenzurone is the active agent, a 72-year-old man had to be resuscitated because of ventricular fibrillation caused by hypotension related to relative underfilling and low systemic vascular resistance. He made a good recovery. Such life-threatening situations can be prevented by publicly announcing plague control

Homeostatic and developmental control of cell size and shape in an insect epithelium, the epidermis of Manduca sexta.

In contrast to previously described transformations of insect epidermal cells, morphological changes in the larval epidermis of Manduca sexta involve large changes in cell volume: a threefold increase at the beginning and a twofold decrease at the end of the last feeding phase. The volume changes are determined, in part, or entirely, by changes in cell height (cell elongation and cell shortening). Initial cell elongation occurs in a region-specific manner, whereas subsequent cell shortening affects all of the epidermis equally. As shown by ligation experiments and hormone treatments in tissue

The Development of Eupyrene Sperm Is Dependent on Sperm-Leucylaminopeptidase in Bombyx mori.

Sexual reproduction is the predominant mode of reproduction in animals, and spermatogenesis is the fundamental step in this process. As the model organism for lepidopteran, the silkworm Bombyx mori exhibits typical dichotomous spermatogenesis, producing both nucleated (eupyrene) and anucleate (apyrene) sperm. Leucylaminopeptidases (LAPs), members of the M17 metalloprotease family, are characterized by their ability to cleave leucine residues from the N-terminus of peptides. In addition to this canonical function, they have been implicated in male fertility in mammals and Diptera. Nevertheless,

Trehalose metabolism mediates trade-offs between reproduction and survival in beet webworm, Loxostege sticticalis, under heat stress.

BACKGROUND: Temperature is an important determinant of developmental and reproductive rates in insects. Here, we investigated the physiological responses of adult beet webworm, Loxostege sticticalis L. (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), to three temperatures (16, 23 and 30 °C) focusing on trehalose metabolism. RESULTS: Exposure of moths to 30 °C accelerated eclosion and ovarian development, but shortened the oviposition period and adult longevity, whereas exposure to 16 °C had opposite effects. Transcriptome analysis revealed that vitellogenin (VG) and vitellogenin receptor (VR) genes were up-regulate

Larval development of a parasitoid depends on host ecdysteroids.

Parasitoids often exhibit high flexibility in their development depending on stages of their host at the parasitism, yet little is known about the mechanism underlying such flexibility. In the study, we evaluated the larval development time of the parasitoid Exorista sorbillans (Diptera: Tachinidae) on the lepidopteran model insect Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae). We found that the development duration of E. sorbillans larvae parasitizing on the late-developmental silkworms was significantly shorter than that of the larvae parasitizing on the early-developmental hosts. Intriguingly, the

Identification and Expression of Integrins during Testicular Fusion in Spodoptera litura.

Integrin members are cell adhesion receptors that bind to extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins to regulate cell-cell adhesion and cell-ECM adhesion. This process is essential for tissue development and organogenesis. The fusion of two testes is a physiological phenomenon that is required for sperm production and effective reproduction in many Lepidoptera. However, the molecular mechanism of testicular fusion is unclear. In Spodoptera litura, two separated testes fuse into a single testis during the larva-to-pupa transformation. We identified five α and five β integrin subunits that were closely

CRISPR/Cas9-Mediated Mutagenesis of Antennapedia in Spodoptera frugiperda.

The homeotic gene Antennapedia (Antp) has been identified as playing a pivotal role in the morphogenesis of the thorax and wings across various insect species. Leveraging insights from previous studies, the functional characterization of Antp in S. frugiperda was undertaken using RT-qPCR and the CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing system. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that Antp shares a high degree of sequence homology among Lepidoptera species. The expression profile of SfAntp was detected by RT-qPCR. The results showed that SfAntp was expressed in the whole growth cycle of S. frugiperda, the express

Using live videography observation and Bayesian isotope mixing model to identify food composition and dietary contribution to inorganic mercury and methylmercury intake by songbird nestlings.

Mercury (Hg) exposure is increasing in terrestrial birds; however, studies on its sources are scarce. In the present study, we elucidated the food composition of green-backed tit nestlings from three urban forest parks (CPL, AHL, and LCG) using live videography observation (LVO). Furthermore, the daily dietary intakes of inorganic Hg (IHg) (MDIIHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) (MDIMeHg) were determined using the Bayesian isotope mixing model (BIMM) to uncover the nestlings' specific dietary Hg contribution. Both LVO and BIMM indicated that Lepidoptera (primarily caterpillar) constituted the primar

Post-integration silencing of piggyBac transposable elements in Aedes aegypti.

The piggyBac transposon, originating in the genome of the Lepidoptera Trichoplusia ni, has a broad host range, making it useful for the development of a number of transposon-based functional genomic technologies including gene vectors, enhancer-, gene- and protein-traps. While capable of being used as a vector for the creation of transgenic insects and insect cell lines, piggyBac has very limited mobility once integrated into the genome of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. A transgenic Aedes aegypti cell line (AagPB8) was created containing three integrated piggyBac elements and the re

Wolbachia endobacteria in a natural population of Culex quinquefasciatus from filariasis endemic villages of south India and its phylogenetic implication.

Understanding Wolbachia mosquito interactions have been recognized as an important concept to develop novel vector control strategies. The prevalence of Wolbachia endobacteria in a natural population of the filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus was determined by the polymerase chain reaction method. Earlier workers had estimated the infection rates of Wolbachia with only one or very few individuals per species. In our study large number of specimens were assayed, and a total of 750 adult Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes were collected from three south Indian villages of Tirukoilur and Muga

Differences in host use efficiency of larvae of a generalist moth, Operophtera brumata on three chemically divergent Salix species.

The food selection, growth, and fecundity of insect herbivores are largely dictated by the chemical composition and nutritive values of plant foliage. We studied the host-use efficiency of larvae of the generalist moth, Operophtera brumata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) on three chemically divergent but nutritively similar willows (Salix spp.). The 4th instars were able to use the salicylate-free leaves of S. phylicifolia efficiently. Growth was slightly reduced on S. pentandra, which contained a moderate level of acetylated salicylates. The high concentration of salicylates found in the leaves of

From Greenhouse Pest to Open-Field Invader: Widespread Distribution and Phenological Expansion of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) in Temperate Hungary.

Invasive species pose increasing threats, particularly in agriculture. Here we assess the open-field distribution, population density, and phenology of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), an invasive pest rapidly expanding its range into open-field habitats in Hungary. Countrywide monitoring using sex pheromone traps was conducted at 23 sites in 2023, complemented with detailed seasonal monitoring at two locations. The results reveal a wide open-field distribution of the pest in Hungary, occurring at 21 of the 23 sampled sites. Population densities were significantly higher in highly urb

Depletion of Gtsf1L impairs development of eupyrene sperm and ovary in Bombyx mori.

Sperm delivers genetic information from the male to the ovum, playing vital roles in sexual reproduction. Like other Lepidoptera, Bombyx mori exhibits dimorphic spermatogenesis, generating coexisting nucleated eupyrene sperm and anucleated apyrene sperm. The mechanism of dimorphic spermatogenesis is still to be clarified. In a previous study, we demonstrated that Gametocyte-specific factor1 (Gtsf1) is essential for female sex determination and PIWI-interacting RNA (piRNA) mediated transposon silencing in B. mori. Here, we performed functional analysis of the Gtsf1 paralog BmGtsf1L using a bina

A herbivore-induced salicylic acid carboxyl methyl transferase produces methyl salicylate in tomato to mediate defense signaling and deter pests.

Methyl salicylate (MeSA) is a component of the herbivore-induced volatile blend of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), and an intermediate in long distance salicylic acid (SA) signaling. To investigate the role of MeSA in interactions between tomato and the lepidopteran pests Helicoverpa zea and Manduca sexta, we used transgenic tomato lines that were antisense (AS) or overexpressors (OE) of the tomato SA carboxyl methyl transferase SlSAMT1, which under- or over-produce MeSA, respectively. Transgenic AS plants produced less MeSA and were more susceptible to both insects compared to wild-type plants

Effects of seed infection by Fusarium verticillioides on maize performance against Sesamia nonagrioides attack.

In maize (Zea mays L), the fungus Fusarium verticillioides can behave as a pathogen, but it is also able of asymptomatic colonization as an endophyte. Therefore, it would be of great value to identify metabolites and/or metabolic pathways implicated in mutualistic and pathogenic interactions. The objectives of the present study were: (i) to investigate the effect of seed colonization by F. verticillioides on maize growth in a group of inbreds with contrasting resistance to F. verticillioides; (ii) to know if maize priming by Fusarium seed infection affects maize response to other parasites and

Mode of action, chemistry and defensive efficacy of the osmeterium in the caterpillar Battus polydamas archidamas.

Chemical secretions are one of the main defensive mechanisms in insects. The osmeterium is a unique organ in larvae of Papilionidae (Lepidoptera), which is everted upon disturbance, secreting odoriferous volatiles. Here, using larvae of the specialized butterfly Battus polydamas archidamas (Papilionidae: Troidini), we aimed to understand the mode of action of the osmeterium, the chemical composition and origin of the secretion, as well as its defensive efficiency against a natural predator. We described osmeterium's morphology, ultramorphology, structure, ultrastructure, and chemistry. Additio

Human ectoparasitosis by mites of the genus Pyemotes Amerling 1861 (Acarina: Pyemotidae).

The mites of the family Pyemotidae Berlese (1897) are a large family of ectoparasitoids arthropods, known as pathogen for humans since the 18th century and responsible for the so-called "straw itch" or "grain itch" in granary and dock workers. The identified species of the genus Pyemotes are divided into two groups: the scolyti group (P. scolyti, P. parviscolyti and P. dimorphus) and the ventricosus group (P. tritici and P. ventricosus). The first group is characterized by nonvenomous mites usually parasitizing bark beetles; the ventricosus group includes species associated with a large number

Influence of Irradiation on the Biology of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae).

Fifth-instar brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys Stål) nymphs were treated by gamma-radiation 60Co at different doses of 8-64 Gy to investigate their irradiation biology and potential for the sterile insect technique (SIT). At adult emergence, males were mated with non-irradiated virgin females to assess the longevity of both sexes, female fecundity, and egg sterility. Biological parameters of their F1 progeny were investigated to determine whether negative effects from parental exposure to radiation were inherited. Results showed that irradiation significantly reduced the lifespan o

Field distribution patterns of pests are asymmetrically affected by the presence of other herbivores.

Because plant phenotypes can change in response to attacks by herbivores in highly variable ways, the distribution of herbivores depends on the occurrence of other herbivore species on the same plant. We carried out a field study to evaluate the co-occurrence of three coconut pests, the mites Aceria guerreronis (Acari: Eriophyidae), Steneotarsonemus concavuscutum (Acari: Tarsonemidae) and the moth Atheloca bondari (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The eriophyid mite Ac. guerreronis is the most important coconut pest around the world, whereas S. concavuscutum and At. bondari are economically important
