Chevalier Jackson: father of endoscopic surgery, and champion of women in medicine, social justice, and public health.

BACKGROUNDS: Chevalier Jackson (1865-1958) was a pioneering force in the medical world, whose extraordinary contributions to surgery and public health have left an indelible impact. He developed the endoscope and perfected the bronchoscope, and his mastery of these tools enabled him to transform the prognosis of foreign body aspiration from 98% mortality to 98% survival. He was also a passionate advocate of public health chairing the national committee on lye legislation, which culminated in the Caustic Poison Act, responsible for poison and antidote labels. Yet Jackson's accomplishments were

The Efficacy of Normal Saline (N/S 0.9%) Versus Heparin Solution in Maintaining Patency of Peripheral Venous Catheter and Avoiding Complications: a Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Heparin is a sulfated polysaccharide belonging to the glycosaminoglycan family with strong anticoagulant activity. It has been widely used to maintain intravascular catheters in patients requiring intravenous medication. It is believed that heparin prevents thrombus formation in the intravascular catheter, but since the 1980s, the necessity of the heparin solution for peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) flushing has been questioned in several clinical trials. According to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), there are four special categories of High Alert Medica

Systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental studies: In-hospital mobilization for patients admitted for medical treatment.

AIM: To determine the impact of strategies to promote mobilization on physical function in hospitalized adults with medical conditions. BACKGROUND: Slow progress is noted on the promotion of mobilization during hospitalization for adult patients admitted for medical conditions. This may reflect the limited evidence on the evaluation of the impact of progressive mobilization activities on clinical endpoints in adult patients throughout hospitalization. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis of published randomized controlled trials in any language. DATA RESOURCES: The literature searc

The Prevention of Medication-related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw.

BACKGROUND: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a preventable complication of antiresorptive treatment. It arises in 1-20% of patients with bone metastases of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies and in 0.1-2% of patients being treated for osteoporosis with bisphosphonates. Depending on the underlying disease and medication dosage, the risk of MRONJ can be elevated even in the first year of antiresorptive treatment. The treatment of MRONJ is difficult and often involves surgery of the jaw. METHODS: We systematically reviewed publications retrieved by a selective search

Roles of medical consultants and expert witnesses in cerebral palsy litigation: a review.

What is the role of the medical consultant and expert witness during the litigation process associated with cerebral palsy (CP)? To address this question, a review was undertaken of the world literature published on CP between 1861 and 2004. The appropriate Medical Subject Heading terms were selected and used in a search of the MEDLINE, ACOGNET and Cochrane Library databases. Also, a manual search was performed. A total of 3,168 articles on CP were reviewed. Of them, 143 met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Analysis of the pertinent articles revealed that this is the first article to address

Medication Safety During Transitions of Care From Paramedicine to Emergency Nursing Care: A Scoping Review Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Transitions of care in the emergency department are critical points for patient safety, particularly during handovers from emergency medical services (EMS) personnel to emergency department clinicians. This rapid and high-pressure environment often prioritizes urgent clinical care over structured communication, increasing the risk of information loss and medication errors, which can lead to serious patient harm, prolonged hospital stays, preventable complications, and death. OBJECTIVE: To systematically map academic and gray literature examining medication-related safety risks d

Medication-induced Micronutrient Deficiencies in Early-stage Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing global health burden, with early-stage patients often managed through long-term pharmacotherapy. However, prolonged use of common medications may unintentionally disrupt micronutrient balance, compounding the metabolic and cardiovascular risks already present in CKD. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to explore the associations between frequently prescribed medications and the development of micronutrient deficiencies in early-stage, non-dialysis CKD patients, highlighting underlying mechanisms, clinical implications, and potential man

Long-term medication with valproic acid has been associated with acute pancreatitis. The purpose of this report is to gain insight into the features of this pancreatitis. A preregistered literature search (CRD42023438294) was performed on the National Library of Medicine, Excerpta Medica, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Patients with alcohol abuse disorder, gallstone disease, hypertriglyceridemia or hypercalcemia, patients with acute valproic acid intoxication, and patients with a pre-existing pancreatitis were excluded. For the final analysis, we retained 73 reports published between 1979

BACKGROUND: Since there is now no medication available that has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune condition that has a detrimental impact on individuals. Recent clinical trials using baricitinib demonstrated that it may be effective in treating AA. This meta-analysis was done to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of baricitinib in comparison to placebo. METHODS: Author looked through Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed, for all published, randomized, clinical trials. RESULTS: This meta-analysis included 1282 participan

DANCR Mediates the Rescuing Effects of Sesamin on Postmenopausal Osteoporosis Treatment via Orchestrating Osteogenesis and Osteoclastogenesis.

As one of the leading causes of bone fracture in postmenopausal women and in older men, osteoporosis worldwide is attracting more attention in recent decades. Osteoporosis is a common disease mainly resulting from an imbalance of bone formation and bone resorption. Pharmaceutically active compounds that both activate osteogenesis, while repressing osteoclastogenesis hold the potential of being therapeutic medications for osteoporosis treatment. In the present study, sesamin, a bioactive ingredient derived from the seed of Sesamum Indicum, was screened out from a bioactive compound library and

Systematic review of pregnancy outcomes after fertility-preserving treatment of uterine fibroids.

The aim of this study was to compare pregnancy outcomes after medical (ulipristal acetate [UPA]), surgical (myomectomy) and radiological (uterine artery embolization [UAE] or thermal ablation) therapy for fibroids in women. A systematic review was conducted and ScienceDirect, PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases were thoroughly searched from 2000 to 2018. Only primary research was included with independent extraction of articles by two reviewers, using a standardized form. Data were available on 12 pregnancies after treatment with UPA, 1575 after myomectomy, 424 after UAE and

Patent Foramen Ovale Closure Versus Medical Therapy in Cryptogenic Strokes and Transient Ischemic Attacks: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials.

Cryptogenic strokes account for about 25% to 40% of total ischemic strokes, and 1 of the 3 of these have a patent foramen ovale (PFO). A meta-analysis concerning the effectiveness and safety of PFO closure in cryptogenic strokes or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) was performed. We systematically searched Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Library through April 2018. Eligible studies were randomized clinical trials. Primary and secondary end points were, respectively, stroke or TIA and stroke recurrences. We calculated risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all end points usi
