Hepato-Renal protective Effects of Egyptian Purslane Extract against Experimental Cadmium Toxicity in Rats with Special Emphasis on the Functional and Histopathological Changes.

The study was designed to clarify the hapato-nephroprotective effects of purslane ethanolic extract (PEE) against cadmium toxicity. Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal. Cd occurs as environmental and food/ feed contamination causing public and animals health hazards. Liver and kidney are the main target organs for acute and chronic cadmium toxicity. Portulaca oleracea is rich in several vitamins, minerals, antioxidant components, and omega-3 fatty acids mainly α-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. Results showed significant elevation of the liver and kidney functions, lipid profile and l

Enhanced Triacylglycerol Content and Gene Expression for Triacylglycerol Metabolism, Acyl-Ceramide Synthesis, and Corneocyte Lipid Formation in the Epidermis of Borage Oil Fed Guinea Pigs.

Triacylglycerol (TAG) metabolism is related to the acyl-ceramide (Cer) synthesis and corneocyte lipid envelope (CLE) formation involved in maintaining the epidermal barrier. Prompted by the recovery of a disrupted epidermal barrier with dietary borage oil (BO: 40.9% linoleic acid (LNA) and 24.0% γ-linolenic acid (GLA)) in essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency, lipidomic and transcriptome analyses and subsequent quantitative RT-PCR were performed to determine the effects of borage oil (BO) on TAG content and species, and the gene expression related to overall lipid metabolism. Dietary BO for 2

Quantification of lipid alkyl radicals trapped with nitroxyl radical via HPLC with postcolumn thermal decomposition.

Lipid alkyl radicals generated from polyunsaturated fatty acids via chemical or enzymatic H-abstraction have been a pathologically important target to quantify. In the present study, we established a novel method for the quantification of lipid alkyl radicals via nitroxyl radical spin-trapping. These labile lipid alkyl radicals were converted into nitroxyl radical-lipid alkyl radical adducts using 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrroline-N-oxyl (CmdeltaP) (a partition coefficient between octanol and water is approximately 3) as a spin-trapping agent. The resulting CmdeltaP-lipid alkyl radic

Changes in membrane lipid and free fatty acid composition during low temperature preconditioning against SO2 injury in coleus.

The effects of a low temperature (13 degrees C) treatment known to provide protection against sulphur dioxide (SO2) injury were assessed on leaf lipid composition in two cultivars of Coleus blumei Benth, found previously to differ in sensitivity to SO2 and other environmental stresses. After 5 days growth at 13 degrees C, there were significant differences in membrane lipid fatty acid composition as well as in free fatty acid (FFA) levels between SO2-sensitive 'Buckley Supreme' ('BS') and SO2-insensitive 'Marty' ('M'). Molecular species of chloroplast galactolipids in 'M' contained increased l

Untargeted Metabolomic Analysis of the Effects and Mechanism of Nuciferine Treatment on Rats With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Metabolomic analysis has been used to characterize the effects and mechanisms of drugs for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) at the metabolic level. Nuciferine is an active component derived from folium nelumbinis and has been demonstrated to have beneficial effects on a high-fat diet (HFD) induced hepatic steatosis model. However, the effect of the altered metabolites of nuciferine on NAFLD has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we established a NAFLD rat model using HFD and treated with nuciferine. The lipid content levels, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress were in

Arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids are strongly associated in maternal and neonatal blood.

BACKGROUND: The red cell membrane fatty acid composition has frequently been used as an index of essential fatty acid (EFA) nutrition. After birth there is a decline in plasma arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids in babies fed on conventional formula which contains only the parent linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids. In human studies, the red cell phosphoglyceride composition appears to be more constant than that of plasma. In infants fed fish oil without AA, the AA proportions fall in the plasma but much less so in the red cells. This result might be considered to mean that th…

The expression of genes in different sites of gut tract regulates the meat quality of semitendinosus muscle in sheep and goats.

INTRODUCTION: For small ruminants, meat quality-an economically significant characteristic-results from the combined effects of genetic, dietary, and physiological elements. However, the contribution of gastrointestinal (GI) tract gene expression to meat quality remains unclear. METHODS: Here, we performed bulk RNA-seq on 130 samples from Liangshan Black Sheep and Meigu Black Goats, including 10 GI tract segments and semitendinosus muscle, integrating these data with measurements of amino acid composition, fatty acid profiles, and volatile flavor compounds. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: We found d

Expression Profiles of Fatty Acid Transporters and the Role of n-3 and n-6 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in the Porcine Endometrium.

Fatty acids (FAs) are important for cell membrane composition, eicosanoid synthesis, and metabolic processes. Membrane proteins that facilitate FA transport into cells include FA translocase (also known as CD36) and FA transporter proteins (encoded by SLC27A genes). The present study aimed to examine expression profiles of FA transporters in the endometrium of cyclic and early pregnant gilts on days 3 to 20 after estrus and the possible regulation by conceptus signals and polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs). The effect of PUFAs on prostaglandin (PG) synthesis and transcript abundance of genes related

Monitoring the Shelf Life of Hemp Seed Oil Stored at Two Temperatures in Different Materials via Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy.

Hempseed oil (HSO) is extremely rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic (18:2 n-6) and α-linolenic (18:3 n-3) acids, which determine its high sensitivity to oxidative and photo-oxidative degradations that can lead to rancidity despite the presence of antioxidant compounds. The aim of this work was to evaluate which material/temperature/light solutions better preserve HSO quality during its shelf life and to test NIR as a rapid, non-destructive technique for monitoring oxidation phenomena. Futura 75 hemp seeds were cold-pressed; the oil was packed into 20 mL vials of four different

The Oxidative and Color Stability of Beef from Steers Fed Pasture or Concentrate during Retail Display.

Beef production in Uruguay is based on pasture (~85%) or concentrate (~15%), resulting in differences in meat quality. The objective of this study was to compare the oxidative stability and color of beef from these two systems during refrigerated retail display. For these purposes, the Semimembranosus muscle was removed from ten Aberdeen Angus steers raised and fed on pasture (130 days prior to slaughter) and from another ten steers fed concentrate (100 days prior to slaughter), sliced. The muscles were placed in a refrigerated showcase for 3, 6, and 9 days. The contents of β-carotene, α-tocop

Large alterations in ganglioside and neutral glycosphingolipid patterns in brains from cases with infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis/polyunsaturated fatty acid lipidosis.

Lipid composition was studied on cerebral tissue from nine children who had died of a progressive encephalopathy called the infantile form of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (INCL) or polyunsaturated fatty acid lipidosis (PFAL). In the terminal stage of the disease, the concentrations of all lipid classes were found to be significantly reduced in the cerebral and cerebellar cortex and white matter. The concentration of gangliosides of the cerebral cortex was 15% and that of cerebrosides (galactosylceramide) in white matter 0.2-5% of the normal values for the children's ages. Identification of osmotic stress resistance mediated by MdKAI2 in apple.

KAR (Karrikin), a novel plant growth regulator, can be recognized specifically by plants and can activate resistance responses. MdKAI2 is the natural receptor of KARs in apple. Here, we report the identification of osmotic stress resistance in MdKAI2 via the method of genetic transformation. The phenotypic traits, resistance indicators, and transcriptional and metabolic regulation of MdKAI2 were identified. KAR1, a highly active form of KAR, markedly promoted the root growth of Gala cultivar tissue culture‒generated plants, possibly through increases in ABA and TZR contents and decreases in th

Effect of whole flax seed and carbohydrase enzymes on gastrointestinal morphology, muscle fatty acids, and production performance in broiler chickens.

Flax seed is a rich source of α-linolenic acid (18:3 n-3). Feeding broiler birds flax seed can increase n-3 fatty acids in meat tissues. However, non-starch polysaccharides in flax seed decrease nutrient digestibility and can have a negative impact on bird performance and muscle fatty acid content. Addition of carbohydrase enzymes to flax-based broiler diets can decrease the anti-nutritive effects of non-starch polysaccharides. An experiment was conducted to investigate on the effect of flax seed and carbohydrase enzyme foregut morphology, muscle tissue, fatty acids, and bird performance. A to

Rutin Attenuates Oxidative Stress Responses and Hepatocyte Metabolomics in β-Hydroxybutyric Acid-Induced Hepatocyte Injury in Calves.

: Negative energy balance (NEB) in dairy cows induces excessive lipolysis, leading to elevated levels of β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA), which, when accumulated, can cause liver damage. Rutin (RT), a natural flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has demonstrated potential hepatoprotective effects; however, its ability to mitigate BHBA-induced hepatocellular injury in calves remains unclear. This study first assessed the impact of various BHBA concentrations on oxidative stress in calf hepatocytes, then explored the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of RT, and fi

Fat reduction in emulsified pork sausages: role of pea protein-stabilized high-internal-phase emulsions.

This study applies high internal phase emulsions of perilla seed oil stabilized by pea protein (PP-PSO HIPEs) to low-fat emulsified pork sausages as a fat substitute to investigate changes in quality and the underlying mechanisms. Five formulations were prepared: a standard-fat control (SF), a reduced-fat control (RF, fat replaced by ice water), and three reduced-fat formulations in which 50% of the fat was replaced with PP-PSO HIPEs, a mixture of pea protein and perilla seed oil (PP-PSO), or perilla seed oil alone (PSO). The results showed that PP-PSO HIPEs improved emulsion stability, textur

Nitro-fatty acid signaling and intracellular biodistribution in plants.

Nitrated fatty acids (NO₂-FAs) are biologically active molecules formed by the reaction between unsaturated fatty acids and reactive species derived from nitric oxide (NO). They are characterised by their ability to release NO, their incorporation into complex lipids and their reactivity with nucleophiles such as cysteine and histidine, facilitating post-translational modifications by nitroalkylation. The main NO₂-FAs identified in plants are nitro-oleic acid (NO₂-OA), nitro-linoleic acid (NO₂-LA), nitro-conjugated linoleic acid (NO2-cLA) and nitro-linolenic acid (NO₂-Ln), whose concentration
