Idiopathic localization-related epilepsies are summarized according to the current classification of the International League Against Epilepsy. The recognition of a distinctive idiopathic epileptic syndrome occurring in children and featuring ictal vomiting, partial motor seizures, and occipital spikes is emphasized. Atypical evolutions of benign partial epilepsy of childhood and status of BPECS. Acquired epileptic aphasia has also been correlated to BPECS, and all these syndrome (CSWS). Childhood epilepsy with occipital paroxysms may also evolve into CSWS and into clinical and EEG status. Dif

Extremely variable clinic and genetic features characterize mitochondrial encephalomyopathy (MEM). Pathogenic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) defects can be divided into large-scale rearrangements and single point mutations. Clinical manifestations become evident when a threshold percentage of the total mtDNA is mutated. In some MEM, the "mutant load" in an affected tissue is directly related to the severity of the phenotype. However, the clinical phenotype is not simply a direct consequence of the relative abundance of mutated mtDNA. Other factors, such as nuclear background, can contribute to the

Several reports showed that abnormality of mitochondrial DNA (mt DNA) can be an etiology of cardiomyopathy in recent years. Cardiac involvement in mitochondrial disease other than Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS), however, has not been documented clearly. Therefore, cardiac involvement, abnormality of mt DNA and defects of the respiratory chain in mitochondrial disease were studied. Thirty-eight patients with mitochondrial disease were studied. The patients were consisted of 2 patients with KSS, 1 patient with probable KSS, 15 patients with ocular myopathy, 1 patient with myoclonus epilepsy with ra

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is a rare mitochondrial disorder characterized by a wide range of systemic manifestations. MELAS is challenging to diagnose in its early stages and currently lacks targeted treatments. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to validate the mitochondrial 3243A > G (m.3243A > G) mutation status, symptom prevalence, and neuroimaging characteristics in patients with MELAS. The review also seeks to consolidate and clarify the pathogenic pathways of MELAS while pinpointing potential therapeutic targe

Fish stock enhancement has been utilised in Taiwan for more than 30 years, yet the impacts of anthropogenic noise on the enhancement programs remain unknown. Anthropogenic noise can induce physiological and behavioural changes in many marine fishes. Therefore, we investigated the effects of acute boat noise (from stock enhancement release sites) and chronic noise (from aquaculture processes) on the anti-predator behaviour in three juvenile reef fishes: Epinephelus coioides, Amphiprion ocellaris and Neoglyphidodon melas. We exposed fish to aquaculture noise, boat noise and a combination of both

Mitochondrial dysfunction can arise from genetic defects or environmental exposures and impact a wide range of biological processes. Among these are metabolic pathways involved in glutamine catabolism, anabolism, and glutamine-glutamate cycling. In recent years, altered glutamine metabolism has been found to play important roles in the pathologic consequences of mitochondrial dysfunction. Glutamine is a pleiotropic molecule, not only providing an alternate carbon source to glucose in certain conditions, but also playing unique roles in cellular communication in neurons and astrocytes. Glutamin

We designed a method to examine the mutation frequencies of the A3243G mutation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in patients with mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome. We performed a qPCR assay using the FAM and VIC TaqMan probes, which detect the 3243G (mutated) and 3243A (wild-type) sequences of mtDNA, respectively. The results obtained by "degree" in a series of differential mutation frequencies were used to plot a standard curve of the mutation frequency. The standard curve was then applied for qPCR assays of the desired samples. The standard

A 30-year-old man was hospitalized with dysarthria and weakness of his right arm and leg. Three months previously, he had noticed numbness and weakness of his right shoulder, which spread to involve his left leg but which improved after 8 months. On admission, neurological examination revealed limb kinetic apraxia and constructive apraxia of the right hand, motor aphasia, dysarthria, and spastic quadriplegia. Sensory examination revealed hyperalgesia and dysesthesia in the right arm and left leg. Deep tendon reflexes were hyperactive in all four extremities. And he had bilateral Babinski signs

In a patient with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and strokelike episodes (MELAS), both T2- and diffusion-weighted MR imaging revealed lesions as hyperintense areas in the occipital lobes early after strokelike episodes. In these lesions, no significant reduction in apparent diffusion coefficient was noted. Apparent diffusion coefficient mapping may help to differentiate strokelike episodes in MELAS from acute ischemic stroke. The strokelike episodes may be related to vasogenic edema and hyperperfusion, which were suggested by our single-photon emission CT and MR imagi
