Role of magnesium in cardiac tachyarrhythmias.

The efficacy of magnesium therapy in patients with ventricular tachycardia has previously been reported. Recently completed and ongoing studies validate earlier observations that potassium and magnesium supplementation may control other cardiac arrhythmias, particularly in hypomagnesemic patients. Magnesium treatment is a viable therapeutic option when other antiarrhythmic agents fail to suppress ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, multifocal atrial tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and supraventricular tachycardia.

Effects of magnesium on skeletal metabolism.

Magnesium (Mg) makes up 0.5-1% of bone ash and is therefore not a trace element in the skeleton. Mg influences both mineral and matrix metabolism in bone by a combination of effects on hormones and other factors that regulate skeletal and mineral metabolism, and by direct effects on bone itself. The skeletal content of Mg is very variable both between and within species, and reported values range between 150 and 440 mmol/kg ash weight (AW). Dietary Mg has a direct influence and age an inverse influence on skeletal Mg content. It is unclear whether skeletal Mg content varies from region to regi…

Magnesium in pregnant women and the newborn.

In this article the importance of Mg for pregnant women and fetal outcome is reviewed. The physiological changes of Mg-containing body fluids and of tissues are discussed. Mg supplementation during pregnancy seems to be necessary and the efficacy on maternal health and on the newborn are reported. Serum Mg levels decrease during pregnancy and there is a 25% increase of renal Mg excretion. Mg supplementation has a positive effect, with reduced incidence of hospital admission and preterm labour, while the gestational age of the fetus is longer. Convulsions may occur in newborns with hypomagnesae

Magnesium and immune function: an overview.

Mg participates in immune responses in numerous ways: as a cofactor for immunoglobulin synthesis, C'3 convertase, immune cell adherence, antibody-dependent cytolysis, IgM lymphocyte binding, macrophage response to lymphokines, T helper-B cell adherence, binding of substance P to lymphoblasts and antigen binding to macrophage RNA. Mg deficiency in rodents impairs IgG synthesis and cell-mediated immunity; complications include thymus atrophy, elevated IgE, hypereosinophilia, histaminosis and lymphoma. Immunologic sequelae of Mg deficiency in humans are subtle and may be affected by genetic contr

Role of magnesium in health and disease.

Appropriate intracellular and extracellular magnesium levels are necessary for proper body functioning. Imbalances of magnesium are common and are associated with a great deal of morbidity and mortality. Routine determination of serum magnesium levels in patients at risk for magnesium disorders must become the norm. As technology improves, cellular magnesium levels will become widely available and may be indicated to guide therapy and prevention of a wide variety of diseases.

Clinical significance of magnesium: a review.

With the increased concern surrounding diuretic-induced electrolyte losses, numerous articles have surfaced investigating the detrimental effects of diuretic-induced hypomagnesemia. This article's purpose is to familiarize the reader with hypomagnesemia and hypermagnesemia. Methods of detection, symptoms, etiologies, and potential modes of therapy are discussed. Particular attention is given to the role magnesium plays in the cardiovascular system with additional discussion on lipid alterations and glucose handling. Specific suggestions are given for the inpatient and outpatient treatment of h…

Magnesium and liver cirrhosis: a hypothesis.

Low serum, cerebrospinal fluid, erythrocyte, muscle and bone Mg concentrations have been found in liver cirrhosis, indicating a Mg deficiency. Decreased intake, fat malabsorption, renal tubular acidosis and increased serum levels of aldosterone, growth hormone and glucagon could be the causative factors.

[Magnesium and phosphorus--the forgotten electrolytes].

The clinical and pathophysiological significance and epidemiology of magnesium and phosphorus excess and deficit are discussed. In daily routine both ions largely remain "the forgotten electrolytes". With both elements deficits are clinically more important than excesses. Dietary intake, gastrointestinal and renal losses, shifts between intra- and extracellular fluid and sequestration within the extracellular compartment are the essential factors which determine body stores and the extracellular concentration of the electrolyte. The clinical signs of excess and deficit often lack specificity a…

Disorders of calcium and magnesium homeostasis.

The components of calcium and magnesium balance and the factors responsible for the maintenance of the serum concentration of these cations are reviewed. Within this framework, the causes and treatment of disturbances of the serum concentration are discussed. Hypercalcemia is usually a reflection of increased bone resorption and/or gut absorption with the kidney playing a secondary role. Hypocalcemia is usually due to either a disturbance in the parathyroid hormone-adenylate cyclase system or a disturbance in vitamin D metabolism. As vitamin D is required for expression of the action of PTH at…

Serum calcium and magnesium in leprosy.

Serum calcium and magnesium were studied in 70 leprosy patients and 25 normal healthy individuals. An attempt has been made in this study to find out if there is any correlation between the clinical and pathological status of the disease and serum calcium and magnesium levels in the blood. Serum calcium was found to be significantly decreased in lepromatous leprosy (Ca=8.42+/-0.7 mg%, P less than 0.001) and dimorphous leprosy (Ca=8.68+/-0.94 mg%, P less than 0.05) while it was normal in tuberculoid leprosy (Ca=9.14+/-2.12, P less than 0.05). The decrease in serum magnesium level was highly sig…

Effect of magnesium on epileptic foci.

Parenteral magnesium sulfate has been used to control acute convulsions of diverse etiologies and is currently a mainstay in controlling eclamptic convulsions. However, the site of this anticonvulsant action has remained controversial and not well studied in experimental epileptic models. Therefore we determined the effects of intravenously infused magnesium sulfate on the epileptic neural activity induced by topical application of penicillin G to motor cortex in anesthetized cats and dogs and in awake, undrugged primates. Magnesium sulfate was able to directly suppress neuronal burst firing a…
