Magnetic resonance imaging of the wrist and hand.

The anatomy of the wrist and hand is complex and contains numerous small structures. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is often an ideal imaging modality in the assessment of various traumatic and pathologic conditions of this region, and it is frequently performed after initial radiographs. In this manuscript we describe the normal anatomy, imaging techniques, and MRI findings of various traumatic and pathologic conditions of the wrist and hand including occult fractures, osteonecrosis, ligamentous and tendon injuries, and entrapment neuropathies.

[Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Multiple Sclerosis].

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The roles of MRI in MS include diagnosis, imaging biomarkers, and safety monitoring for patients receiving disease-modifying drugs (DMDs). In terms of diagnosis, MRI plays a pivotal role in the international diagnosis criteria (McDonald criteria). MRI is also useful for differential diagnosis. The rate of MS misdiagnosis might be as high as 10%, and careful interpretation of MRI may reduce rates of misdiagnosis. Quantified MRI data have been widely used as primary and secondary outcome

Magnetic resonance imaging of noradrenergic neurons.

Noradrenaline is a neurotransmitter involved in general arousal, selective attention, memory, inflammation, and neurodegeneration. The purpose of this work was to delineate noradrenergic neurons in vivo by T1-weighted MRI with magnetization transfer (MT). In the brainstem of human and mice, MRI identified the locus coeruleus, dorsal motor vagus nucleus, and nucleus tractus solitarius. Given (1) the long T1 and low magnetization transfer ratio for the noradrenergic cell groups compared to other gray matter, (2) significant correlation between MT MRI signal intensity and proton density, and (3)

Magnetic Resonance Enema in Rectosigmoid Endometriosis.

Intestinal endometriosis occurs in 4% to 37% of women with deep endometriosis (DE). Noninvasive diagnosis of presence and characteristics of rectosigmoid endometriosis permits the best counseling of patients and ensures best therapeutic planning. Magnetic resonance enema (MR-e) is accurate in diagnosing DE. After colon cleansing, rectal distention and opacification improves the performance of MR-e in diagnosing rectosigmoid endometriosis. MR imaging cannot optimally assess the depth of penetration of endometriosis in the intestinal wall. There is a need for multicentric studies with a larger s

Diffusion tensor cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

Cardiac structure and function are complex and inter-related. Current in vivo techniques assess the heart on a macroscopic scale, but a novel technique called diffusion tensor cardiovascular magnetic resonance (DT-CMR) can now assess the cardiac microstructure non-invasively. It provides information on the helical arrangement of cardiomyocytes that drives torsion and offers dynamic assessment of the sheetlets (aggregated cardiomyocytes) that rotate through the cardiac cycle to facilitate wall thickening. Through diffusion biomarkers, the expansion and organisation of the underlying myocardium

Availability of a Magnetic Method for Hepatocyte Transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocyte transplantation is a promising alternate for the treatment of hepatic diseases. Hypothermic preservation of isolated human hepatocytes is potentially a simple and convenient strategy to provide on-demand hepatocytes in the quantity sufficient and the quality required for biotherapy. Isolated fresh hepatocytes include damaged cells that are also early apoptotic cells, which is not ideal for hepatocyte transplantation. However, this does not reflect cell viability, although it is considered that it adversely affects cell survival after transplantation. We aimed to harves

Magnetic resonance imaging of the pediatric mediastinum.

The mediastinum, the central anatomical space of the thorax, is divided by anatomical landmarks but not by physical boundaries. The mediastinum is a conduit, a space through which cranial nerves, important nerve branches, the sympathetic chain, vascular structures, and visceral structures, the trachea and esophagus pass. This arrangement allows contiguous extension or communication of disease along facial planes and through potential spaces to and from the head and neck or cervical spine, to and from the superior mediastinum, between superior and inferior mediastinal levels, and between inferi

Magnetic Resonance in Transthyretin Cardiac Amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) is an increasingly recognized cause of heart failure. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), with late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and T1 mapping, is emerging as a reference standard for diagnosis and characterization of cardiac amyloidosis. OBJECTIVES: The authors used CMR with extracellular volume fraction (ECV) measurement to characterize cardiac involvement in relation to outcome in ATTR. METHODS: Subjects comprised 263 patients with cardiac ATTR corroborated by grade 2 to 3 99mTc-DPD (99mTc-3,3-diphosphono-1,2-propanodicarboxylic acid) ca

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance elastography: A review.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. These cardiovascular diseases are associated with mechanical changes in the myocardium and aorta. It is known that stiffness is altered in many diseases, including the spectrum of ischemia, diastolic dysfunction, hypertension and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In addition, the stiffness of the aortic wall is altered in multiple diseases, including hypertension, coronary artery disease and aortic aneurysm formation. For example, in diastolic dysfunction in which the ejection fraction is preserved, stiffness can potentially be an im

Magnetic Oculomotor Prosthetics for Acquired Nystagmus.

PURPOSE: Acquired nystagmus, a highly symptomatic consequence of damage to the substrates of oculomotor control, often is resistant to pharmacotherapy. Although heterogeneous in its neural cause, its expression is unified at the effector-the eye muscles themselves-where physical damping of the oscillation offers an alternative approach. Because direct surgical fixation would immobilize the globe, action at a distance is required to damp the oscillation at the point of fixation, allowing unhindered gaze shifts at other times. Implementing this idea magnetically, herein we describe the successfu

Myocardial Viability on Cardiac Magnetic Resonance.

The study of myocardial viability is of great importance in the orientation and management of patients requiring myocardial revascularization or angioplasty. The technique of delayed enhancement (DE) is accurate and has transformed the study of viability into an easy test, not only for the detection of fibrosis but also as a binary test detecting what is viable or not. On DE, fibrosis equal to or greater than 50% of the segmental area is considered as non-viable, whereas that below 50% is considered viable. During the same evaluation, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) may also use other techniq

Klestadt Cyst: Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The Klestadt cyst, also known as nasoalveolar cyst, is an uncommon nonodontogenic tumor located in the maxillofacial soft tissue, on the region corresponding to the nasolabial furrow. Following its first description by Zuckerkandl in 1882, <300 patients have been reported in the literature. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the preferred modality for diagnosis and management of Klestadt cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging is superior to computed tomography in demonstration of the relationship with surrounding soft tissues and bones, and also showing the accurate localization of the lesion. Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Perirenal Pathology.

The perirenal space can be involved by a variety of neoplastic, inflammatory, infectious, and proliferative disorders. Magnetic resonance imaging is often an ideal technique for identification and staging of lesions arising within the perirenal space, with its superior soft tissue characterization as well as its ability to visualize extension into blood vessels and adjacent organs. This pictorial essay describes the magnetic resonance imaging appearance of a variety of pathologies which can arise from or involve the perirenal space, and provides a framework for categorization and differential

Cerebellovascular Disease: Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The goal of this thesis was to elucidate the details of cerebellovascular diseases with advanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) and to translate the findings to routine clinical MRI. The first aim was to image cerebellar arterial perfusion territories, which was achieved by applying super-selective arterial spin labelling (ASL) MRI with labelling of both vertebral arteries in addition to the carotid arteries. The second aim was to unravel the imaging patterns of cerebellar infarctions with 7T post-mortem MRI in addition to volume (3D) clinical MRI. This research led to the description o
