The Herbst appliance can be very effective in treatment of Class II patients with mandibular retrognathism. Because of the continuous action in a full-time basis, treatment time using it normally takes from six to ten months, and is usually followed by a second phase of full fixed appliances, in order to obtain both occlusal refinement and long term stability. Despite Herbst appliance's effectiveness in the occlusal and dentoalveolar perspectives, its facial results may differ among patients with different growth patterns, as well as in distinct stages of skeletal maturation. In the current pa

OBJECTIVE: Respiration is a vital functional process that has effects on normal craniofacial development. Since the upper airway formations and dentofacial structures are adjacent to each other, the interaction between them is possible. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of removable functional appliances used in the treatment of patients with mandibular and maxillary growth retardation-stenosis in Class I, Class II, and Class III malocclusion on the upper airway.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty two patients were studied in the study. The patients were divided into 4 groups accord

In this article, the short- and long-term results of two types of functional appliances are discussed regarding their ability to stimulate the mandibular growth at mandibular retrognathia and reduce an increased overjet. Removable functional appliances, or activators, are compared to a fixed functional appliance, the Herbst appliance. The activator, often consisting of an acrylic base, is advised to be worn for 12 to 20 hours a day. The Herbst appliance consists of interconnected bands around the molar- and premolar bands, keeping the mandibula continuously positioned forward by means of hinge

To systematically review the effects of functional appliances (FA) using incremental vs maximal mandibular advancement regarding cephalometric measurements in class II malocclusion individuals and to assess patient-centred-outcomes. Six electronic databases were searched without restrictions up to April 2020. We included randomized and non-randomized controlled trials using identical FA. Trials involving participants who used adjunct appliances, inter-maxillary elastics, who received surgical treatment or that recruited individuals with cleft lip/palate or craniofacial deformity/syndrome were

Class II malocclusion may be caused by the maxillary protrusion or the mandibular retrusion. One treatment method is to use a headgear, which might affect the dimensions of the patient's airway. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a headgear on the airway dimensions in class II malocclusion patients. A digital search and a manual search were conducted for English-language articles published from January 2000 to December 2018 about human clinical trials, including the usage of a cervical headgear in class II malocclusion patients who had measurable changes in the airway and/or jaw

BACKGROUND: With the changing paradigm from primarily hard tissue to soft tissue evaluation for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, the priority has shifted to bring about improvement in the profile and smile characteristics of patients. Since not only the esthetics but also the stability of orthodontic treatment is largely determined by the soft tissue envelope, proper positioning of the soft tissue drape becomes paramount. Soft tissues of face, namely, nose, lips, and chin, are of paramount importance not only from an esthetic but also from functional and treatment stability points

The class II bimaxillary protrusion malocclusion with class II or end on molar relation is generally associated with procumbency of lips. This case report presents a case of a 17-year-old nongrowing male patient with a traumatized left central incisor due to a fall with a chief complaint of forwardly placed and gap in upper front teeth. The traumatized left central incisor with Ellis class IV fracture was with a loss of crown structure and a poor prognosis of remaining tooth structure. Class II bimaxillary protrusion malocclusion was planned to be treated with orthodontic camouflage. A fixed m

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to analyze risk factors for midcourse correction (MC) during the first series of aligners in treatments with Invisalign (Align Technology, Santa Clara, Calif).
METHODS: Three hundred and fourteen patients treated with Invisalign were divided into MC and non-midcourse correction groups according to whether they completed the first series of aligners. Differences between these groups were compared with independent sample t tests, chi-square tests, and Wilcoxon rank sum tests. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent risk fa

BACKGROUND: Class II malocclusion is one of the most common malocclusion with varied prevalence. Functional therapy with appliances like Twin Block or Fixed functional appliances forms the mainstay of treatment in growing Class II patients. These patients might demonstrate narrow airway due to the retrognathic position of the mandible. This study investigated the effects of twin block and fixed functional appliance therapy (Forsus™ FRD) on the pharyngeal airway space in skeletal Class II patients.
METHODS: Forty patients with Class II malocclusion were selected and divided into two equal grou

The biological nature of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) featuring adaptive remodeling allows for TMJ structural changes in response to external stimuli, including alterations in occlusion and in mandibular posture. Correlative susceptibility exists between malocclusions and TMJ disorders (TMD), evidenced by high incidence of TMD coinciding with skeletal originated malocclusion with facial prognathsim (Angle Class I skeletal II high angle). Clinical manifestations include markedly retruded mandible together with increased overjet, or mandibular transverse deviation, due to condylar pathological
