Astroblastoma is a rare glial neoplasm composed of cells that have broad processes oriented perpendicular to central vessels and often demonstrate vascular sclerosis. The WHO 2016 classification does not specify a grading system for astroblastoma, and categorizes them as well-differentiated or malignant. These broad classification rubrics, however, do not accurately predict clinical outcome. Genetic profiling of astroblastoma has therefore been of particular interest in the recent years. These efforts, although in small number, have revealed heterogeneous molecular findings that may explain as

This randomized controlled trial evaluated the three-dimensional (3D) accuracy of condylar positioning in mandibular reconstruction using pre-bent plates with customized plate navigation (CPN) compared with the traditional method (TM). Thirty patients with mandibular tumours were randomized to the CPN or TM group (15 each). Pre- and postoperative computed tomography quantified deviations in intercondylar distance and angulation, 3D displacement of the most superior point (assessed in superior-inferior, anterior-posterior, and medial-lateral directions on the affected condyle), and affected con

Vascularized fibular bone grafts have advantages over other bone grafts in the restoration of the contour and function of defective mandibles. The fibular graft can be tailored to fit even major mandibular defects; in combination with preformed temporomandibular joint prostheses total mandibular reconstruction can be performed in a single procedure. The fibular transplant is considered ideal for the insertion of implants to support dental suprastructures to obtain maximal oral rehabilitation. We have used fibular grafts in eight cases for primary or secondary reconstruction of a variety of man

OBJECTIVES: Optimal contouring of fibula free flaps (FFF) for mandibulectomy often requires osteotomies. This study aimed to define criteria for initial gap width by evaluating whether postoperative gap size and other factors influence long-term osseous union on CBCT, and to identify key determinants of bone healing.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 75 patients who underwent segmental mandibulectomy with FFF reconstruction from 2017 to 2024. Initial osteotomy gaps were measured at four points on postoperative CBCT scans. Osseous union was assessed using a callus scale. Demographic,

BACKGROUND: Perineurioma (PN) is a peripheral nerve disease that primarily develops in the limbs and trunk and very rarely occurs in the oral cavity. PN is classified into two types: intraneural perineurioma (INPN) and soft tissue perineurioma (extraneural perineurioma, ENPN). In this article, we report a patient with mandibular body INPN derived from the perineurium of the inferior alveolar nerve.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 43-year-old male. He consulted our department for a detailed examination of the right mandibular body. A biopsy was performed at another hospital and he was dia

INTRODUCTION: Primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) is a rare, benign, mixed epithelial–mesenchymal neoplasm, histologically characterized by spindle- to stellate-shaped cells in a fibromyxoid stroma resembling dental papilla, bordered by columnar epithelium. It occurs mainly in children and adolescents, often in the posterior mandible, and radiographically presents as a well-defined radiolucency associated with unerupted teeth. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old male presented with asymptomatic swelling of the right mandible. Imaging revealed a well-demarcated unilocular radiolucency extending to

This report describes an atypical case of canine acanthomatous ameloblastoma (CAA) with mucinous glandular differentiation in a 12-year-old male Chihuahua with a right mandibular mass. Initially diagnosed as CAA by biopsy, computed tomography revealed bone lysis, prompting surgical excision. Histological examination showed lobular growth with two distinct neoplastic cell populations: typical CAA-like cells and a minor glandular structure population. Mucinous glandular differentiation in CAA is undocumented in veterinary literature. Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for cytokeratin AE1/AE3

A female patient, 15 years old, presented to the primary health unit with a complaint of vestibular and lingual swelling in the mandibular region, with a duration of 5 months. Imaging analysis revealed a destructive lesion with poorly defined margins. After an incisional biopsy, the lesion showed expansive and rapid growth. Microscopic analysis revealed an odontogenic tumor characterized by a biphasic composition of epithelial and mesenchymal components. The epithelial component showed unequivocal ameloblastoma-like features, without evidence of malignancy. In contrast, the spindle cell stroma

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibromas are rare, non-aggressive benign tumours of the bone, commonly involving the posterior mandible in middle-aged individuals with a female predilection.
FINDINGS: Clinical manifestations include asymptomatic expansion of the mandible with infrequent maxillary lesions, pain, malocclusion, and compromised quality of life including aesthetic perception. Owing to multiplicity of features, tendency of recurrence, and possibility of malignant transformation, the diagnosis, treatment, and post-operative management of ossifying fibroma are always a challenge.

A 4-year-old white male DSH cat was presented to the Veterinary Hospital on 18 December 2023, with a history of lethargy, loss of appetite, and salivation. During the inspection of the oral cavity, unilateral swelling was observed on the ventral side of the jaw. Before any therapeutic intervention, a cell blood count (CBC) test and FNA cytology were conducted. A five-day course of adjunctive treatment, including ceftriaxone (5.5 mg/kg via IV) and clindamycin (25 mg/kg via IV), was given due to a suspicion of infection. Pantoprazole, metoclopramide (administered at 1 mg/kg via IV and IM), and d

Odontoma is the most common odontogenic tumour derived from both epithelial and mesenchymal components of the tooth-forming apparatus. It is commonly diagnosed in the second and third decades of life when a radiograph is taken for some other purpose, as most cases are asymptomatic. This case involves a young boy, with the chief complaint of pain and swelling in the lower left back region. An intraoral examination revealed a carious and hypoplastic left permanent mandibular first molar. Although the molar was suspected as the source of his symptoms, radiographic imaging revealed multiple odonto

Mandibulotomy provides good access for monobloc compartmental resection of squamous cell carcinoma in the proper oral cavity. Various designs of osteotomy have been reported, but few of them have considered the local anatomical conditions, and thus related complications occasionally happen. We devised a paramedian lateral-angled mandibulotomy to reduce the side injuries.

Aggressive juvenile fibromatosis of the jawbones is a rare tumor presenting as infiltrative mass with unpredictable evolution. We report herein a 17-year-old student with a 6-month history of radiologically proven resorption of a part of the mandible, lingual displacement of tooth 34 and malocclusion. Alveolar ridge resorption and three dark-brown foci in the bone were seen after the tooth was extracted. Histological study showed the tumor tissue to have a bundle-like structure; immunohistochemically it was positive for vimentin, smooth muscle actin, beta-catenin, Ki-67 (5%), and negative for

AIM: Desmoid-type fibromatosis is a broad group of rare disorders that originate from musculoaponeurotic structures. They represent less than 0,1% off all tumors and the annual incidence is 2-4 cases per million, with two peaks between 6 and 15 years of age and between puberty and age 40. They are rare in the oral and maxillofacial regions. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial. The treatment is still mainly represented, both in children and adults, by surgical excision.
CASE REPORT: A case is reported of a 8-year- old girl with desmoid fibroma in the mandible who presented at the Department of

We report a clinical case of a 26 years old female who had a 2 years evolution chin tumour with hypercalcemia (11.8 mg/dl) and PTH (paratohormone) of 761 pg/ml. She underwent a CT scan and MRI of the mandible, as well as a biopsy followed by excision of the tumour by the maxilofacial surgeons. Our ENT Department asked for a Scintigraphy (Tc99s-mibi) and thoracic-cervical CT, which showed a lesion that turned out to be an adenoma of the lower right parathyroid gland after surgery and pathological examination. The patient suffered a Primary hyperparathyroidism that was the main stimulus for the

Aneurysmal bone cysts originating in the craniofacial region have seldom been reported in Taiwan. A case of aneurysmal bone cyst arising in the right mandible of a 15-year-old Chinese boy was presented with both the roentgenographic and microscopic findings. In view of the high recurrent rate and the large destructive mandibular lesion, segmental resection with immediate bone grafting for reconstruction and a conscientious follow up regimen was employed. The etiology and pathogenesis of this interesting lesion remained unclear but several theories were reviewed and the differential diagnosis o

The role and effectiveness of non-vascularised bone grafts (NVBG) in reconstructing post-oncologic segmental mandibular defects remain inconsistent and debated, particularly in the setting of a compromised recipient bed often affected by prior radiation therapy and significant soft tissue loss. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the outcomes of NVBGs for segmental mandibular defects resulting from oral cancer resection. A comprehensive electronic search of literature up to June 30, 2025, identified relevant studies. Inclusion criteria followed PICOT - NVBG reconstruction
