Design and evaluation of mechanical strength of multi-material polymeric implants for mandibular reconstruction.

Reconstruction of mandible implants to address segmental abnormalities is still a challenging task, both in vitro and in vivo. The mechanical strength of the materials used is a critical factor that determines how well bone is regenerated. The reconstruction technique of mandibular abnormalities widely uses polymeric implants. It is critical to evaluate the mechanical resilience under different load cases, including axial, combined, and flexural loading conditions. This study developed implants for mandibular defects using a combination of four materials: polylactic acid (PLA), polyethylene te

Prosthetic rehabilitation in patients with jaw reconstruction by fibula free flap: A systematic review.

This systematic review aimed to evaluate the dental prosthetic rehabilitation (DPR) in patients after jaw reconstruction with fibula free flap. Four databases were searched from January 2000 to January 2023. Of the 2507 studies identified, 36 observational studies were included. Cancer was the most common surgical indications for jawbone resection with 58.3 % of cases followed by benign tumours which representing 24 %. The DPR rate was estimated at 51.6 % across the studies (ranging from 38 % to 55 % depending on the benign or malignant nature of the tumors). Implant-supported prostheses repre

Multidisciplinary rehabilitation of eosinophilic granuloma with bone graft surgery and a modified implant-supported hybrid prosthesis: A case report with a 6-year follow-up.

Eosinophilic granuloma is the most common form of Langerhans cell histiocytosis and corresponds with bone lesions characterized by pain, rapid growth, and high tendency of recurrence after inadequate curettage. It is a rare disease that is difficult to diagnose clinically and radiographically because it mimics other odontogenic cysts and tumors. In this report, the reconstruction of an osseous defect with an iliac graft and a modified implant-supported hybrid prosthesis after surgical excision of an eosinophilic granuloma in the mandible of a 27-year-old male patient was described. The patient

Oral myeloid sarcoma: two case reports.

Myeloid sarcoma, also commonly termed granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma, is a rare condition involving infiltration of immature myeloid cells in an extramedullary site. Myeloid sarcoma is often related to leukaemia; however, the condition can also occur in association with various myeloproliferative disorders. Although myeloid sarcoma can occur in any body part, involvement of the neoplastic condition in the oral cavity is infrequent with only 37 cases reported in the literature. We will describe two cases of oral myeloid sarcoma observed at The Alfred Hospital's Dental Unit and discuss their p

Virtual Reality Planning for Mandible Reconstruction: A Case Report.

Mandibular reconstruction with a free fibula flap is considered the gold standard for implant-based prosthodontic rehabilitation. Doing so with presurgical virtual planning has become commonplace, resulting in procedure-specific osteotomy guides and fixation plates, but is limited by a cumbersome user experience. A new virtual reality (VR)-based mandible reconstruction application, ImmersiveRecon, could address these shortcomings. This case report discusses a free fibula-based mandible reconstruction and osseointegrated dental implant placement surgery planned in VR. A 17-year-old man with a h

Comparison of the biomechanical effect of distal implants placed at different angles in the all-on-four technique: A nonlinear finite element analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The "All-on-four" technique addresses this by placing two vertical implants in the anterior region and two posterior implants angled up to 45°. This study evaluates stress distribution on bone, implants, abutments, gingiva, and prostheses based on posterior implant angulation, using both standard and angled neck implants. Additionally, angled neck implants were used alongside standard implants. METHODS: To evaluate the biomechanical stress and displacement behavior of implants placed at 15°, 30°, 45°, and 30° neck-angled in the interforaminal region of using the All-on-four tech

Predictability of single versus double-barrel vascularized fibula flaps and dental implants in mandibular reconstructions: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Patients with vascularized bone flaps from the fibula have reduced bone height, in which case a higher prosthetic abutment is needed for their implant-supported prosthesis. Although the double-flap technique seems promising, systematic reviews and meta-analyses of prospective studies are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the grafted areas of single barrel fibular flaps (SBFF) and double-barrel fibular flaps (DBFF) by considering failure rates, dental implant complications, and bone union at the osteotomy sites. Catabolic changes of rat temporomandibular joint discs induced by unilateral anterior crossbite.

BACKGROUND: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc plays a role in joint movement and in load absorbance and distribution. An experimental unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) prosthesis induces mandibular condylar cartilage degeneration in rats. However, the changes in the articular disc are still unknown. OBJECTIVE: To describe changes in the TMJ discs of UAC rats. METHODS: The discs of fifty-four Sprague-Dawley rats, equally distributed into a UAC group and an age-matched sham-operated control group at 4, 12 and 20 weeks (n = 9), were evaluated by gross and histomorphological observation a

Interim Implant-Supported Resection Prosthesis Following Fibula Free Flap Reconstruction of the Arch with Immediate Implants: A Novel Approach for the Oncologic Patient.

Oral cancer treatment involving the maxilla and/or mandible often results in esthetic and functional deficits that can diminish the patient's quality of life. As a result, expeditious reconstruction of the defect and dental rehabilitation is desirable. Dental rehabilitation shortly after reconstruction with an osteocutaneous free flap and resection prosthesis is a persistent challenge for patients with oncologic defects where immediate dental rehabilitation is not a possibility. Additionally, conventional prosthesis fabrication techniques are impractical or impossible due to postoperative anat

Endodontic and restorative management of an adult with avulsion of multiple teeth: A case report with 5 years and 9 months of follow-up.

Simultaneous avulsion of four or more teeth is a rare event. This case report examines the dental care given to an adult who, during a bicycle accident, experienced the avulsion of a mandibular incisor as well as all of his maxillary incisors. In the immediate aftermath of the accident, four out of the five incisors were located, promptly collected, and stored in a tooth rescue box, all within a 20-min window. Replantation and splinting were performed on the day of the accident. Endodontic treatment involved sequential intracanal dressing with an antibiotic-corticosteroid paste followed by cal
